sādhanekṣāṁ vinā yasminn akasmād bhāva īkṣyate |
sādhana-īkṣāṁany sign of a practice — any seeing of a means being done acc.; object of vināसाधन का दर्शन (जिस साधन से भाव उपजता है, उसका देखा जाना) — 'बिना' का कर्म

yasmin — in the person in whom; sādhana-īkṣāṁ vinā — without any sign of a practice; akasmāt — suddenly, with no visible cause; bhāvaḥ — bhāva (ecstatic love); īkṣyate — is seen to appear.
sādhana-īkṣāṁ — साधन का दर्शन; vinā — के बिना; yasmin — जिसमें; akasmāt — अकस्मात्; bhāvaḥ — भाव; īkṣyate — देखा जाता है।
Take the case of a person in whom bhāva — the first ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa — is seen to appear. It shows up suddenly, out of nowhere. And there is no sign that this person ever did any devotional practice for it. This is the puzzle the verse sets up.
जिस भक्त में साधन का कोई दर्शन हुए बिना ही अकस्मात् भाव प्रकट होता दिखाई देता है —
bhāva: the term names the dawning stage of pure love (the sprout of prema); here it is the effect whose sudden, cause-less appearance has to be explained.
भाव यहाँ शुद्ध प्रेम की उदय-अवस्था का नाम है — प्रेम का अंकुर; यही वह कार्य है जिसके अकस्मात्, बिना कारण के प्रकट होने की व्याख्या करनी है।

atra — in such a case; prāk-bhavīyaṁ susādhanaṁ — an excellent practice done in a former life; vighna-sthagitam — one that was blocked by some obstacle; ūhyaṁ — must be inferred.
atra — यहाँ; prāk-bhavīyaṁ — पूर्वजन्म का; su-sādhanaṁ — उत्तम साधन; vighna-sthagitam — विघ्न से रुका हुआ; ūhyaṁ — अनुमान करना चाहिए।
In such a case, you must infer that the practice was there — you just cannot see it. The person did an excellent devotional practice in a former life. But some obstacle blocked it, so its fruit was held back and did not ripen then. Now, in this life, that delayed fruit finally shows up as bhāva. So the effect had a cause after all; the cause was simply hidden in a past life.
ऐसे स्थल में यह अनुमान कर लेना चाहिए कि पूर्वजन्म में किया गया कोई उत्तम साधन रहा होगा, जो किसी विघ्न से रुक/ढक गया था।

sādhanekṣām itithe words "sādhanekṣām" (that is: without the seeing of the means) — Jīva picks up the verse's opening word to begin his gloss pratīka, lemma-citation"साधनेक्षाम्" — इस पद को उठाकर (उद्धृत प्रतीक)
sādhanekṣām iti — [he glosses] the phrase beginning "sādhanekṣām"
sādhanekṣām iti — "साधनेक्षाम्" इस पद को उद्धृत कर।
Jīva starts by quoting the verse's opening word, sādhanekṣām, to comment on it. It is his cue: "On the words 'sādhanekṣām…'" So he takes up the case of bhāva arising without any seeing of a cause, and now explains what that means.
"साधनेक्षाम्" — इस पद को उठाकर टीकाकार व्याख्या आरम्भ करते हैं।
iti after a quoted word is the standard way a commentator names the phrase he is about to gloss; here "sādhana-īkṣām" = "the seeing of the means (sādhana)."
किसी उद्धृत पद के बाद 'इति' लगाना टीकाकार की वह रीति है जिससे वह जिस पद की व्याख्या करने जा रहा है उसका नाम ले लेता है; यहाँ "साधनेक्षा" का अर्थ है — साधन का देखा जाना।

sādhanāni — the practices; pūrvokta-sādhanābhiniveśa-kṛṣṇa-prasāda-bhakta-prasāda-lakṣaṇāni kāraṇāni — namely the already-mentioned causes: absorption in practice, Kṛṣṇa's grace, a devotee's grace; teṣām īkṣāṁ — the seeing of them; śāstrādi-dvārā jñānaṁ — i.e. knowing them through śāstra and the like; vinā — without; yasmin — in whom; bhāvo raty-ādir — bhāva, rati and the rest; īkṣyate niścīyate — is seen, is ascertained; tasmin — in that person; vṛtrādiṣv iva — as with Vṛtra and others; prāg-bhavīyaṁ sādhanam — a former-life practice; ūhyam — is to be inferred.
Here Jīva spells out the verse. "Sādhanas" means the causes of bhāva that were already listed earlier: earnest absorption in practice, the grace of Kṛṣṇa, and the grace of a devotee. "Seeing" these causes means coming to know them through śāstra and the like. So take a person in whom bhāva — that is, rati and such loving feeling — is clearly seen, is settled as present, yet none of those causes can be traced. In that person you must infer a practice done in a former life. He gives an example: it is like Vṛtra and others. The mapping is this: Vṛtra is the person showing sudden bhāva with no visible cause in this life; the "former-life practice" is the hidden sādhana that explains it; and "is to be inferred" is the conclusion we are told to draw. The example proves the rule — when devotion appears with no present cause, a past-life practice is the explanation. It stops there: it does not say the practice is absent, only that it is unseen because it lies in an earlier birth.
"साधन" शब्द का अर्थ है वे कारण, जिनका लक्षण है — पूर्वोक्त साधन में तत्परता, कृष्ण की कृपा और भक्त की कृपा। उन कारणों को शास्त्र आदि के द्वारा जान लिए बिना ही जिस भक्त में भाव — अर्थात् रति आदि — निश्चित रूप से देखा जाता है, उसमें वृत्र आदि की भाँति पूर्वजन्म के साधन का अनुमान कर लेना चाहिए।
vṛtrādiṣv iva points to Vṛtra (Vṛtrāsura), a demon who nonetheless showed exalted devotion; the parallel commentaries name him as Vṛtrāsura. The word "cause" (kāraṇa) here is not physical causation but the standard means (sādhana) prescribed for bhāva; the point is that its effect can outlast the life in which it was performed.

First he unpacks the verse's word 'sādhana' (means). The 'means' are the causes of bhāva, and they come in three kinds: deep, settled engagement in the practice already described; the grace of Kṛṣṇa; and the grace of a devotee. Then he glosses 'seeing' (īkṣā) plainly as just 'sighting' — a darśana of those causes. So the verse is about a person in whom none of those three causes can be seen at work, yet bhāva — that is, rati (loving attachment) and the stages beyond it — is still observed to arise. What do we conclude about such a person? The example carries the point: he is 'like Vṛtrāsura and others.' Vṛtrāsura is a demon in whom devotion nonetheless surfaced with no visible present-life cause — and the tradition holds it came from practice done in a former life. Map it onto our case: the missing present-life cause stands for the unseen sādhana; the bhāva that appears anyway is the effect that must have a cause; and the conclusion the example forces is that the cause was simply earlier — a practice performed in a previous life. So in such a person a former-life sādhana 'is to be inferred' (ūhyam): the effect proves a cause even when the cause is out of sight. The analogy proves only this much — that a hidden past-life practice supplies the missing cause; it is not claiming the person is a demon or that no practice occurred, only that the practice lies in a former birth.
जिनका लक्षण है पूर्वोक्त साधन में तत्परता, कृष्ण की कृपा और भक्त की कृपा — वे ही कारण हैं। उन कारणों की ईक्षा अर्थात् दर्शन हुए बिना ही जिस भक्त में भाव — अर्थात् रति आदि — देखा जाता है, उसमें वृत्रासुर आदि की भाँति पूर्वजन्म के साधन का अनुमान कर लेना चाहिए।
bhāva: in ordinary Sanskrit just 'a state, a feeling'; here the technical term for the dawn of divine love, the sprout of prema, of which rati (loving attachment) is the first form. ūhya (from √ūh, 'to reason out'): 'to be inferred / surmised' — an inference from effect back to an unseen cause, the standard move when a present-life cause is absent.
