Now a question comes up. Back in 1.3.8, Rūpa listed a set of three ways bhāva (loving emotion) can arise, the first being throwing yourself into practice. And here he has added another: bhāva coming from practice carried over from a past life. So among all these ways, which one is the best? To answer that, Rūpa has in mind the case of Pūtanā and others like her — people who got the highest bhāva through Kṛṣṇa's mercy alone, without doing the practice. With that example in view, he speaks the verse beginning 'loka…' (lokottara…), whose own answer is that such bhāva is 'born of Kṛṣṇa's mercy' (kṛṣṇa-prasādaja).
dṛṣṭānta = 'the illustrating case.' Pūtanā, the demoness sent to kill baby Kṛṣṇa, is the stock example of someone who received supreme bhāva purely by Kṛṣṇa's grace, never by sādhana; naming her here previews the verse's verdict that the best bhāva is the one Kṛṣṇa himself gives.
