Any connection with the Lord made through the mind, no matter how it happens, is called smṛti, remembrance. The definition is deliberately wide. The mental link does not have to be steady or refined or of any particular kind. However the mind touches its object, that counts as smṛti. This is the broad, outer definition of the term, marking off the whole territory that the finer grades of remembrance will later be sorted within.
जिस किसी भी प्रकार से, मन के द्वारा जो सम्बन्ध बन जाता है, उसी को स्मृति कहते हैं। यहाँ कोई नियम नहीं — मन का कैसा भी लगाव हो, वही स्मृति है।
smṛti: in general usage 'memory, recollection', and as a text-category the remembered scriptures (Smṛti) as against revealed Śruti; here it is a technical name for one form of the mind's contact with the Lord — the loosest grade, any mental connection whatsoever.
'स्मृति' का सामान्य अर्थ है स्मरण या याद, और शास्त्र-वर्ग के रूप में यह श्रुति से भिन्न स्मरण-किए-गए ग्रन्थ (स्मृति-शास्त्र) को कहती है। परन्तु यहाँ यह भगवान् के साथ मन के सम्पर्क के एक प्रकार का पारिभाषिक नाम है — सबसे शिथिल श्रेणी, अर्थात् मन का जिस किसी भी प्रकार का जुड़ाव।
