Viśvanātha sets up the verse. We have grasped the drift of the whole section: give up every other practice, do devotion alone, and you attain Kṛṣṇa. Then a question naturally arises — in what frame of mind should the devotee practice? To answer that, Kṛṣṇa speaks this verse, 'tat te…'
prakaraṇa — home sense: a topical 'section' or context of a text; here the surrounding discussion of the Bhāgavata whose conclusion Viśvanātha is summarizing before the verse answers the leftover question.

Viśvanātha decodes the verse's words. 'Tat' means: since it stands this way, therefore. To establish the maxim that even liberating dharma is not for material gain, he reads 'the fruit of his own deeds' as two things: the happiness that comes as an unsought byproduct even of devotion, and the pain that comes as the fruit of offenses against devotion. While simply undergoing both, the devotee watches well and rightly for your compassion — this is how 'su-samīkṣamāṇaḥ' is unpacked — knowing that whatever pleasure or pain arrives in its time is nothing but the fruit of the Lord's mercy.
Why cited: The quoted half-line 'dharmasya hy āpavargasya…' (BhP 1.2.9) is adduced to prove that even liberation-granting dharma yields no result meant for material gain — so the devotee treats all outcomes as mercy, not as wages.
ananusaṁhita — 'not intended, not aimed at'; the happiness is real but arrives as a byproduct, never as the devotee's goal — the point of the BhP 1.2.9 maxim.

nimba-rasa — juice of the neem, proverbially bitter but medicinal; the father gives it not to hurt but to heal, exactly as the Lord sends pain.

Viśvanātha finishes the analogy and applies it. The father embraces and kisses the son, and sometimes slaps him with his palm — all from love. So the devotee thinks: 'My Lord alone, like a father, knows what is good and bad for me; I do not. Over me — no real devotee of yours — time, karma, and the rest have no authority at all. So it is he alone who, out of kindness, feeds me pleasure and pain, and draws me into his own service.' Reflecting thus, he prays to the Lord every day, like King Pṛthu, bows down with heart, words, and body, and is never crushed by his lot. Whoever lives this way becomes the heir. Here Viśvanātha offers a third reading of 'mukti-pade': take mukti and pada as a dvandva ('liberation and the place'), meaning both freedom from saṁsāra AND service at your feet — so the devotee is heir to two fruits, the incidental one (liberation) and the chief one (loving service). The mapping of the analogy: as a son's inheritance comes simply from his staying alive, the devotee's 'inheritance' comes simply from his 'living' — and his living, here, is nothing but staying on the path of devotion. That is why the confirming verse says the breathing survive like mere bellows unless they are devoted to you.
Why cited: Pṛthu's verse (BhP 4.20.31) is adduced as the model prayer — the devotee, like Pṛthu, entrusts his welfare entirely to the Lord who alone knows his good; the second verse (BhP 10.87.17) is cited to prove that 'living' worth the name is only life lived in devotion, so that the devotee's perseverance in bhakti is the 'staying alive' that earns the inheritance.
ānuṣaṅgika vs. mukhya-phala — an 'incidental' result vs. the 'chief' one. Homely example: a farmer plants for grain (the chief fruit); the straw he also gets is incidental (ānuṣaṅgika) — real, but not what he was after. Here liberation from saṁsāra is the straw, the incidental byproduct; loving service at Kṛṣṇa's feet is the grain, the chief fruit the devotee actually inherits. The father-son dṛṣṭānta: the father = the Lord; milk and neem-juice / embrace and slap = pleasure and pain; the father's love = the Lord's mercy behind both; the son's simply staying alive = the devotee's simply remaining in bhakti; the inheritance the son thereby earns = liberation-and-service the devotee thereby earns. The analogy proves that pain too is mercy and that mere perseverance in devotion secures the fruit; it stops short of implying the devotee earns it by any calculated effort — like the son, he need only keep living.
