hari-nāmākṣara-yutaṁ bhāle gopī-mṛḍaṅkitam |
hari-nāmākṣara-yutaṁthe man who carries the syllables of Hari's name (that is, the man wearing the letters of the Lord's name) bahuvrīhi, acc. sg. describing the devoteeजिसका शरीर हरि के नाम के अक्षरों से युक्त है
bhāleon his forehead loc. of placeमस्तक पर (ललाट पर)
gopī-mṛḍaṅkitamand marked there with gopī-clay (gopī-mṛd = the special clay/earth used by the gopīs) = gopī-mṛd-aṅkitamगोपी-मृत्तिका से अंकित (जिस पर गोपी की मिट्टी का तिलक लगा है)
hari-nāmākṣara-yutaṁ — a man carrying the syllables of Hari's name; bhāle — on the forehead; gopī-mṛḍaṅkitam — marked with gopī-clay
hari-nāmākṣara-yutaṁ — हरि के नाम के अक्षरों से युक्त; bhāle — मस्तक पर; gopī-mṛḍaṅkitam — गोपी-मृत्तिका से अंकित
Here is a man who wears the very letters of Hari's name. On his forehead he is marked with gopī-clay. (Line two will finish the picture and say what happens to such a person.)
जिस भक्त का शरीर हरि के नाम के अक्षरों से युक्त है, और जिसके मस्तक पर गोपी-मृत्तिका का तिलक अंकित है —
Why cited: adduced under the heading 'wearing the syllables of the Name' (nāmākṣara-dhṛtiḥ) to show the devotee who bears the Name's letters on his body
क्यों उद्धृत: इसे 'नामाक्षर-धृति' (नाम के अक्षरों को धारण करना) शीर्षक के अन्तर्गत उद्धृत किया गया है — उस भक्त को दिखाने के लिए जो अपने शरीर पर नाम के अक्षर धारण करता है।
gopī-mṛd: the sacred clay/earth associated with the gopīs of Vraja; here used as tilaka-clay, and glossed by Jīva below as gopī-candana.
गोपी-मृत् — व्रज की गोपियों से सम्बद्ध पवित्र मिट्टी; यहाँ तिलक की मिट्टी के रूप में ली गई है; आगे जीव इसे गोपी-चन्दन कहकर समझाते हैं।

tulasī-mālikoraskaṁ spṛśeyur na yamodbhaṭāḥ ||
tulasī-mālikoraskaṁwhose chest bears a tulasī garland (tulasī-beads worn on the chest) bahuvrīhi, acc. sg.; = tulasī-mālikā-uraskamजिसका वक्षःस्थल तुलसी की माला से युक्त है
spṛśeyur nathey may not touch — cannot lay a hand on him optative + negationस्पर्श न कर सकें
yamodbhaṭāḥthe fierce agents of Yama (Yama's formidable messengers, the Yamadūtas) = yama-udbhaṭāḥ, nom. pl., the subjectयम के उग्र दूत (कर्ता)
tulasī-mālikoraskaṁ — the man whose chest wears a tulasī garland; yamodbhaṭāḥ — Yama's fierce agents; na spṛśeyuḥ — may not touch [him]
tulasī-mālikoraskaṁ — जिसका वक्षःस्थल तुलसी-माला से युक्त; spṛśeyur na — स्पर्श न करें; yamodbhaṭāḥ — यम के उग्र दूत
His chest wears a garland of tulasī. Such a man — Yama's fierce agents cannot even touch him. The three marks together (the Name's syllables, the gopī-clay tilaka, the tulasī garland) put him beyond the reach of death's messengers.
ऐसे भक्त को — जिसका वक्षःस्थल तुलसी की माला से सुशोभित है — यम के उग्र दूत स्पर्श तक नहीं कर सकते।
Why cited: scriptural proof that one who bears the Name-syllables (with tilaka and tulasī) is untouchable by Yama's agents — the fruit that makes 'wearing the Name's syllables' a limb of devotion
क्यों उद्धृत: यह शास्त्रीय प्रमाण है कि जो नाम के अक्षर (तिलक और तुलसी सहित) धारण करता है, उसे यम के दूत छू भी नहीं सकते — यही फल 'नाम के अक्षरों को धारण करना' को भक्ति का अंग सिद्ध करता है।
yamodbhaṭāḥ: the Yamadūtas, the servants of Yama (death); 'may not touch' echoes the Ajāmila episode where Yama's men are turned back from a bearer of the Name.
यमोद्भट — यमराज (मृत्यु) के दूत; 'स्पर्श न कर सकें' में अजामिल-प्रसंग की ध्वनि है, जहाँ नाम धारण करने वाले के पास से यम के दूत लौटा दिए जाते हैं।

gopī-mṛd-aṅkitaṁ gopī-candanena tilakitam ||
gopī-mṛd-aṅkitaṁas for 'marked with gopī-clay' [in the verse] the verse-word being explained'गोपी-मृत्तिका से अंकित' — (यही वह पद है जिसकी व्याख्या हो रही है)
gopī-candanenait means: with gopī-candana (the pale clay-paste called gopī-candana) instr. of meansगोपी-चन्दन के द्वारा
tilakitamhe is marked with tilaka — wearing the tilaka-mark past-participle predicateतिलक किया हुआ
gopī-mṛd-aṅkitaṁ — the verse's 'marked with gopī-clay'; gopī-candanena tilakitam — [means] marked with tilaka made of gopī-candana
gopī-mṛd-aṅkitaṁ — 'गोपी-मृत्तिका से अंकित'; gopī-candanena — गोपी-चन्दन के द्वारा; tilakitam — तिलक किया हुआ
Jīva pins down one word. The verse said 'marked with gopī-clay.' He explains: this clay is gopī-candana, and the man wears it as tilaka. So the forehead-mark is a gopī-candana tilaka.
'गोपी-मृत्तिका से अंकित' का अर्थ है — गोपी-चन्दन के द्वारा किया हुआ तिलक।
gopī-candana: a pale sacred clay traditionally dug from Dvārakā, used by Vaiṣṇavas for tilaka; Jīva identifies the verse's 'gopī-mṛd' (gopī-earth) with it.
गोपी-चन्दन — द्वारका से निकाली जाने वाली एक हल्के रंग की पवित्र मिट्टी, जिसे वैष्णव तिलक के लिए प्रयोग करते हैं; जीव श्लोक के 'गोपी-मृत्' को इसी से पहचानते हैं।

Now Viśvanātha opens a second, punning reading (śleṣa) of the verse — he does not cancel the plain sense, he layers a further one on top. He gathers two kinds of natural beads: the tulasī-beads worn at the neck, and — in the same way — the ripe, hard seeds that sit in the whorl at the center of lotuses. He joins the two with 'and.' In s2 he will say what these strung-together beads amount to: a rosary of the alphabet. This sets up the pun on akṣa-mālā.
गले में धारण की हुई तुलसियों का, और इसी प्रकार उन कमलों का — जिनकी कर्णिका के भीतर पके हुए बीज स्थित हैं — (ये दोनों प्रकार के दाने अगले पद में 'जिनकी माला' कहकर समेटे जा रहे हैं)।
śleṣa (double meaning): the verse's tulasī-garland is being re-heard as a rosary; here Viśvanātha assembles its 'beads' — neck-tulasī plus lotus-seeds — so that they can be called an akṣa-mālā in the next segment.
श्लेष (द्वि-अर्थ) — श्लोक की तुलसी-माला को अब जपमाला के रूप में पुनः सुना जा रहा है; यहाँ विश्वनाथ उसके 'दाने' — गले की तुलसी और कमल-बीज — एकत्र करते हैं, जिससे अगले खण्ड में इन्हें अक्ष-माला कहा जा सके।

akṣa-mālā a-kārādi-kṣa-kāra-paryanta-varṇa-saṅkhaka-mālā yeṣām ||
akṣa-mālāthe word 'akṣa-mālā' (a rosary / string of beads) — here taken apart for its second sense the term being re-read'अक्ष-माला' — (यही वह पद है जिसे पुनः पढ़ा जा रहा है)
a-kārādi-kṣa-kāra-paryanta-varṇa-saṅkhaka-mālāmeans: a garland whose count runs through the letters from the letter 'a' up to the letter 'kṣa' — i.e. a string numbering the whole alphabet (a…kṣa = akṣa) = a-kāra-ādi kṣa-kāra-paryanta varṇa-saṅkhaka mālā; unpacks akṣa-mālāअ-कार से लेकर क्ष-कार तक के वर्णों की संख्या वाली माला
yeṣāmwhich they [the neck-tulasī and lotus-seeds of s1] possess — those beads that make up this alphabet-rosary bahuvrīhi relative, gen. pl., back-referring to s1's genitivesजिनकी (यह अक्ष-माला है)
akṣa-mālā — the 'rosary'; a-kārādi-kṣa-kāra-paryanta-varṇa-saṅkhaka-mālā — [is] a garland numbering the letters from 'a' to 'kṣa'; yeṣām — belonging to those [tulasī-beads and lotus-seeds]
akṣa-mālā — 'अक्ष-माला'; a-kārādi-kṣa-kāra-paryanta-varṇa-saṅkhaka-mālā — अ-कार से आरम्भ होकर क्ष-कार तक के वर्णों की संख्या वाली माला; yeṣām — जिनकी
Viśvanātha now cashes out the pun. Break 'akṣa-mālā' as a·kṣa — 'a to kṣa' — the first and last letters of the alphabet. So akṣa-mālā is a garland that counts off every letter from 'a' through 'kṣa': a rosary of the whole alphabet, that is, of the Name's syllables (akṣara). And whose rosary is it? — 'of those' beads from s1: the neck-tulasī and the ripe lotus-seeds. So on this reading the devotee's tulasī-and-seed garland IS a string of all the sacred syllables. This is why the verse sits under 'wearing the syllables of the Name' (nāmākṣara-dhṛtiḥ). The plain reading (a simple tulasī garland) still stands; this second reading is layered over it and is left standing beside it, not resolved away.
'अक्ष-माला' अर्थात् वह माला जिसमें अ-कार से क्ष-कार तक के वर्ण गिने गए हों — यह उन (गले की तुलसी और कमल-बीजों) की है जिनका ऊपर वर्णन हुआ। इस प्रकार 'अक्ष' को 'अ-क्ष' पढ़कर दानों की माला वर्णों (अक्षरों) की माला बन जाती है।
akṣa-mālā normally = a rosary (akṣa = a rudrākṣa/rosary bead). Viśvanātha re-hears akṣa as 'a-kṣa,' the alphabet from a to kṣa, so the bead-string becomes a garland of syllables (akṣaras) — dovetailing the verse with the section-title nāmākṣara-dhṛtiḥ, 'bearing the letters of the Name.'
अक्ष-माला का सामान्य अर्थ है जपमाला (अक्ष = रुद्राक्ष अथवा जप का दाना)। विश्वनाथ 'अक्ष' को 'अ-क्ष' सुनते हैं — अ से क्ष तक की वर्णमाला; इस प्रकार दानों की माला अक्षरों की माला बन जाती है, और श्लोक 'नामाक्षर-धृति' शीर्षक से ठीक मेल खा जाता है।
