ārādhanaṁ bhagavata īhamānā nirāśiṣaḥ |
ārādhanamthe worship, the loving service acc. sg., object of īhamānāḥभगवान् की आराधना (पूजा-सेवा) को
bhagavataḥof the Lord (Bhagavān) gen. sg.
īhamānāḥthose who strive after, who exert themselves for pres. mid. participle, nom. pl.(जो) करने की चेष्टा करते हुए हैं
nirāśiṣaḥfree of any request, wanting nothing in return nom. pl., 'without āśis (a boon asked for)'किसी वर (माँगी हुई कामना) से रहित
nirāśiṣaḥ — wanting nothing in return; bhagavataḥ ārādhanam — the worship of the Lord; īhamānāḥ — those who strive after (it)
There are people who work hard at the worship of the Lord and ask for nothing in return. They serve Him with no boon in mind.
Why cited: Indra's words (Bhā.pu. 6.18.74), quoted here to define who is truly wise in self-interest — the desireless devotee.
nirāśiṣ: āśis in ritual usage is the priest's 'blessing/boon asked for'; here nir-āśiṣ means the devotee makes no such request at all — not even the standard boons of worship.

And those who do not even want liberation, the highest thing of all — they are the ones held to be truly clever about their own good. The 'even' is the point: they turn down the greatest prize, and that is exactly why they count as wise.
Why cited: Second line of Indra's verse (Bhā.pu. 6.18.74): scriptural warrant that refusing even mokṣa is what marks real self-interest.
param here = the highest attainment, i.e. mokṣa/liberation; the commentators (Jīva, Viśvanātha) spell this out. It is not 'the Supreme' as a name of God here, but 'the topmost goal.'

Viśvanātha gives the same reading as Jīva. 'Param,' the highest, is liberation. So: they do not want even liberation.

svārtha-kuśalā iti — regarding 'skilled in self-interest'; tena — by this reasoning; ye — those who; hareḥ ārādhanena — by worship of Hari; mokṣam icchanti — want liberation; te — they; vartamāna-mahā-nidhi-vinimayena — by bartering away a great treasure in hand; tṛṇārthinaḥ — are seekers of a mere straw; svārtha-anabhijñāḥ — ignorant of their own true interest
Now the phrase 'skilled in their own interest.' Read the flip side, Viśvanātha says. Those who worship Hari but do it in order to get liberation are trading away a great treasure they already hold — the Lord's own service — for a blade of grass. Such people do not actually know what is good for them. The mapping: the treasure in hand is loving service to Hari; the straw is mokṣa; the trade is asking for liberation as the price of worship. The point: since the desireless devotee is 'wise in self-interest,' the one who bargains for mokṣa is, by contrast, the fool who knows nothing of his own good.
This is the dṛṣṭānta (illustration) driving the contrast. It proves the verse's point by inversion — if refusing mokṣa is wisdom, then wanting it in exchange for service is the height of foolishness (giving up gold for grass). It does not deny that mokṣa has value; s4 immediately grants that these people are not left empty-handed.

kintu viṣaya-sādguṇyāt te’pi kṛtārthā evety arthaḥ |
kintubut, however — turning to concede a point adversative particleपरन्तु
viṣaya-sādguṇyātbecause of the excellence of the object (of worship), because the one they worship is so supremely good abl. of cause; compound: viṣaya 'object (here Hari)' + sādguṇya 'having good qualities, excellence'विषय (यहाँ हरि) की उत्तम गुणवत्ता के कारण
te apieven they (even those straw-seekers) nom. pl. + 'even'वे भी
kṛtārthāḥ evado reach their goal all the same, are indeed successful 'kṛtārtha (one whose aim is accomplished)' + eva 'indeed'कृतार्थ (जिनका प्रयोजन सिद्ध हुआ) ही (हैं)
iti arthaḥthat is the meaning closing formula, 'iti arthaḥ'ऐसा अर्थ है
kintu — but; viṣaya-sādguṇyāt — because of the excellence of the object worshipped; te api — even they; kṛtārthāḥ eva — do attain their goal; iti arthaḥ — such is the sense
But Viśvanātha softens it at once. Even those grass-seekers still succeed — and they succeed because of the sheer excellence of the one they worship. Serving so good an object cannot fail to bear fruit, even for someone who came asking for the wrong, smaller thing. That is the meaning. So the earlier scolding is not the last word: the greatness of Hari carries even the misguided worshipper to his goal.
viṣaya here = the object of worship, i.e. the Lord, not 'sense-object.' The concession works because the value flows from whom you serve, not from what you asked for.

Viśvanātha clinches it with a line from the Bhāgavatam. When people ask the Lord for something, He does truly give them exactly what they asked for. So even the worshipper who requests only liberation gets it — the Lord grants the petition. The verse backs the concession of s4: whatever a person begs, the excellent Lord actually delivers.
Why cited: Bhā.pu. 5.19.26, cited to prove s4's concession — since the Lord grants whatever is asked, even the mokṣa-seeking worshipper does attain his goal.
arthita appears twice: first as a passive participle qualifying the Lord ('being asked') and then as the neuter object ('the thing asked for'). The wordplay tightens the point — asked, He gives the very thing asked.
