yā nirvṛtiḥ — the joy that; tanu-bhṛtām — for embodied beings; tava pāda-padma-[dhyānāt] — from meditation on your lotus feet
This is Dhruva speaking, and Rūpa Gosvāmī quotes it here. Dhruva names a certain joy: the deep contentment that comes to embodied beings. It comes from your lotus feet — the sentence carries on into the next line to say how.
Why cited: Dhruva's prayer, adduced to show a pure devotee wants the joy of bhakti and refuses even liberation.
nirvṛti: in ordinary use 'satisfaction, cessation, being at rest'; here the settled inner bliss a devotee feels in devotional acts.

The joy comes in two ways. One, from meditating on your lotus feet. Or two, from hearing talk about your devotees. Either way, that same joy would arise. Note that bhakti, not liberation, is the source of this joy.

That same joy — Dhruva now says where he does not want it. O Lord, let it not arise even in brahman. And he identifies brahman as your own glory, your own greatness. Even there — in that highest impersonal state — Dhruva does not want it. He wants the joy of devotion, not the joy of merging.
Why cited: The heart of the verse: even brahman-realization is declined, since it is only the Lord's glory, not the Lord's person.
brahman: in Vedānta broadly, the supreme impersonal Absolute; here read by the commentators as sva-mahiman, the Lord's own effulgent greatness — a step below his personal service.

And if he refuses even brahman, then what to speak of heaven? The heavenly vehicle is shattered by the sword of death — that is, the residents' merit runs out and they fall. Of such beings who come crashing down from heaven, Dhruva certainly wants no part of their joy. This is an a fortiori: he has already turned down the greater prize, so the lesser is out of the question.
Why cited: Completes the argument from greater to lesser — heaven's pleasure, being temporary and lost at death, is even less worth wanting than brahman.

dhyānādinā apifor meditation and the rest too — so 'hearing' also covers meditation and the other practices instr., the wider set indicatedध्यान आदि का भी (जिस विस्तृत समूह की ओर संकेत है)
yā iti [in] dhyānāt iti — the word 'dhyānāt'; upalakṣaṇam śravaṇādeḥ api — is an indicator for hearing etc. as well; śravaṇena iti upalakṣaṇam dhyānādinā api — 'by hearing' is likewise an indicator for meditation etc. as well
Viśvanātha opens on the verse's first word 'yā'. He makes a technical point about two words in it. 'Meditation' (dhyānāt) is an upalakṣaṇa — it names one practice but stands for a whole family: hearing, chanting, and the rest. And 'hearing' (śravaṇena) works the same way — it stands for meditation and the other practices too. So the verse is not restricting the joy to just these two acts; each word is shorthand for the full range of devotional service.
upalakṣaṇa vs viśeṣaṇa: a viśeṣaṇa is a defining trait that is part of the thing — 'a blue lotus', where blueness belongs to that lotus. An upalakṣaṇa merely points you to something without being part of it — 'the house with the crow on it', where the crow only helps you locate the house and is no part of it. Here 'meditation' and 'hearing' are upalakṣaṇa: each just points to the whole set of devotional practices, and is not meant to fence the joy off to that one act alone.

A quick gloss: when the verse says 'that' (sā), it means that joy — the nirvṛti, the contentment, named at the start. Viśvanātha is just pinning down what the pronoun points back to.

Viśvanātha glosses 'brahman, your own glory' as: brahman is nothing but the Lord's own greatness taking form. He spells out what that amounts to — even the bliss of brahman, brahmānanda. And he glosses the verse's 'let it not be' (mā bhūt) plainly as 'it does not arise'. So: even in the joy of impersonal brahman, let this devotional joy not appear. Dhruva sets brahmānanda aside.

mahataḥ bhāvaḥ mahimā'glory' (mahiman) means the state of being great — the abstract noun from 'great' derivation: mahat + -iman = the quality of greatness'महत्' का भाव ही 'महिमा' है (महत् + इमन् = महानता का भाव)
tvaṁ mahān'you are great' — yes, granted, you are great the concession Viśvanātha voicesतू महान् है (यह छूट विश्वनाथ स्वयं देते हैं)

tāvatī tatra kathaṁ vartatāmhow could that much of it exist there [in mere brahman]? tāvatī correlative; tatra = in brahman; rhetorical 'how could'उतना उस (ब्रह्म) में कैसे रह सकता है (यह प्रश्न ही अस्वीकृति है)
iti bhāvaḥ— this is the underlying sense formula closing an implied meaningऐसा अभिप्राय है (अन्तर्निहित भाव को बंद करने का सूत्र)
mahataḥ bhāvaḥ mahimā — 'glory' is the state of being great; tvaṁ mahān — you are great; tat tu mahattvam sarva-vyāpakatva-lakṣaṇaḥ dharmaḥ eva — but that greatness is merely the attribute of all-pervadingness; iti tvan-niṣṭhā yāvatī nirvṛtiḥ tāvatī tatra kathaṁ vartatām — so, the joy that rests in you personally, however much, how could that much exist there [in brahman]; iti bhāvaḥ — this is the sense
Viśvanātha now derives the word 'glory'. Mahiman just means 'the state of being great' — the abstract noun from 'great'. He grants the point: yes, you are great. But — and here is the turn — that greatness is merely one attribute of yours, the trait of being all-pervading. It is not your full personal self; it is just a quality. So the sense is this: the joy that rests in YOU, in your person, however much of it there is — how could that same joy be found over there, in mere brahman, which is only your all-pervading attribute? The person and the joy that clings to the person cannot be had from a bare quality. That is the implied meaning.
sarva-vyāpakatva: 'all-pervadingness', the classic mark of impersonal brahman. Viśvanātha's point is that this is only a dharma (an attribute) of the Lord, not the Lord himself — so the joy tied to the Lord's person is not available in that attribute.

Viśvanātha backs up his gloss with scripture. In the Eighth Canto, Lord Matsya himself says: 'And my own glory is what people call the Supreme Brahman.' So on the Lord's own word too, we learn that brahman is nothing other than the Lord's glory — not a separate, higher reality, but his effulgent greatness. This confirms the reading of 'sva-mahiman' just given.
Why cited: Scriptural proof, from Matsya's own words, that impersonal brahman is only the Lord's glory — grounding the verse's 'brahmaṇi sva-mahimani'.
para brahman: usually 'the Supreme Absolute' as the highest reality; here the quote itself subordinates it — it is called Supreme Brahman, but it is really just the Lord's own mahiman (glory).

Having settled that even brahman's joy is refused, Viśvanātha finishes the verse's last line. He glosses the terms: 'death's sword' means Time; 'shaken to pieces' means broken apart; the 'vehicle' is the celestial one, heaven itself. Of those who fall from that heavenly vehicle — for them this devotional joy is simply not there. So what more need be said? Once the greater case (brahman) is turned down, the lesser (heaven) needs no argument at all.
vimāna: in the epics/Purāṇas a celestial flying craft, here standing for the heavenly station itself, which one loses when merit is spent.

Now Viśvanātha draws the conclusion, and this clause gives the reason. Dhruva has set aside heaven and set aside liberation. So scripture is here declaring some third thing — something higher than both heaven and liberation — to be the real reward. Because we hear this other thing named as the fruit, the next line tells us what it is. (The reason-clause runs straight into segment 8.)

apavarga: 'release, final liberation', the standard fourth goal of life (mokṣa); here ranked below the joy of bhakti, which Dhruva prizes above it.

First, that bhakti is its own reward (svataḥ phalatva): it does not aim at some outside prize. Second, that true devotees are niṣkāma — free of any ulterior desire; they turn down heaven and liberation alike because devotion is already the goal. Dhruva's refusal is thus the classic proof-text for both points.
niṣkāma: elsewhere 'acting without desire for reward' (as in niṣkāma-karma); here specifically that the devotee desires nothing beyond bhakti itself — not heaven, not liberation.
