naikātmatāṁ me spṛhayanti kecin
nanot negation, governs spṛhayantiनहीं (स्पृहयन्ति क्रिया का निषेध)
ekātmatāmfor oneness with me — for merging into my being accusative, object of spṛhayantiएकात्मता को — मेरे साथ एक हो जाने (लीन होने) को
mewith me genitive/dative: oneness with whomमेरे साथ (जिसके साथ एकता)
spṛhayantithey long, they crave present, 3rd pl.स्पृहा करते हैं, चाहते हैं
kecitsome people — a certain kind of devotee nominative subjectकुछ (भक्त) — कर्ता
kecit — some; me ekātmatām — for oneness with me; na spṛhayanti — do not long
na — नहीं; ekātmatām — मेरे साथ एकात्मता को; me — मेरे साथ; spṛhayanti — स्पृहा करते हैं; kecit — कुछ भक्त।
Some people do not crave oneness with me. Kṛṣṇa is speaking. He means: there is a kind of devotee who feels no hankering to merge into my being.
कुछ भक्त मेरे साथ एकात्मता की स्पृहा नहीं करते।
Why cited: Kṛṣṇa's own words (as Kapila) that his pure devotees refuse even liberation-as-merging into him.
क्यों उद्धृत: श्रीकृष्ण के (कपिलरूप में कहे) अपने ही वचन, जो दिखाते हैं कि उनके शुद्ध भक्त उनमें लीन हो जाने वाली मुक्ति तक को भी नहीं चाहते।
ekātmatā: 'sameness of self, identity.' Home sense in Advaita would be the soul's identity with brahman; here it names the liberation of merging into the Lord (sāyujya), which these devotees decline.
एकात्मता का अर्थ है 'आत्मा का एकत्व, तादात्म्य'। अद्वैत में इसका मूल अर्थ जीव का ब्रह्म के साथ एक हो जाना है; यहाँ यह भगवान् में लीन हो जाने वाली मुक्ति (सायुज्य) को कहता है, जिसे ये भक्त अस्वीकार कर देते हैं।

mad-īhāḥhaving me as their one aim — I alone am what they want bahuvrīhi: 'whose effort/wish is me'जिनकी सारी चेष्टा-कामना मैं ही हूँ
mat-pāda-sevā-abhiratāḥ — absorbed in serving my feet; mad-īhāḥ — having me as their sole aim
mat-pāda-sevā-abhiratāḥ — मेरे चरणों की सेवा में रत; mad-īhāḥ — जिनकी सारी चेष्टा मैं ही हूँ।
They are absorbed in serving my feet. I alone am their aim. Everything they strive for is me.
वे मेरे चरणों की सेवा में रत रहते हैं और उनकी सारी चेष्टा मुझमें ही है।
Why cited: Describes the devotees of L1 — their whole engagement is service to Kṛṣṇa's feet, not liberation.
क्यों उद्धृत: पहली पंक्ति के भक्तों का वर्णन — उनका सारा प्रयत्न श्रीकृष्ण के चरणों की सेवा है, मुक्ति नहीं।

Why cited: Shows the devotees act together in fellowship — the setting for celebrating Kṛṣṇa's deeds in L4.
क्यों उद्धृत: दिखाता है कि भक्त मिलकर, संग-साथ में रहते हैं — यही अगली पंक्ति में श्रीकृष्ण के कर्मों के गान का प्रसंग है।

pauruṣāṇiheroic deeds — the mighty acts I perform accusative pl., objectपराक्रमों को, वीर-कर्मों को
mama pauruṣāṇi — my heroic deeds; sabhājayante — they celebrate together
sabhājayante — सम्मानपूर्वक गान करते हैं; mama — मेरे; pauruṣāṇi — पराक्रमों को।
Together they celebrate my heroic deeds. In each other's company they sing the praises of my mighty acts.
मेरे पराक्रमों का सम्मानपूर्वक गान करते हैं।
Why cited: The devotees' actual occupation — praising Kṛṣṇa's exploits — which they prefer over liberation.
क्यों उद्धृत: भक्तों का वास्तविक कार्य — श्रीकृष्ण के पराक्रमों का गान — जिसे वे मुक्ति से अधिक चाहते हैं।
pauruṣa: literally 'manliness, prowess.' Here it names Kṛṣṇa's mighty exploits — his līlās such as lifting Govardhana, as Viśvanātha will gloss.
पौरुष का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'पुरुषत्व, पराक्रम'। यहाँ यह श्रीकृष्ण के महान् वीर-कर्मों — गोवर्धन-धारण जैसी लीलाओं — को कहता है, जैसा विश्वनाथ आगे व्याख्या करेंगे।

ekātmatāṁ brahma-sāyujyaṁ bhagavat-sāyujyam api ||
ekātmatāmoneness with me — the word from the verse he is glossingएकात्मता का अर्थ है —
brahma-sāyujyammeans merging into brahman — dissolving into the impersonal Absoluteब्रह्म के साथ सायुज्य (ब्रह्म में लीन हो जाना)
bhagavat-sāyujyam apiand even merging into the Lord himself api = 'even,' extends the sense to the higher form of mergingऔर भगवान् के साथ सायुज्य भी — 'भी' शब्द उच्चतर लीनता तक अर्थ को बढ़ाता है
ekātmatām — oneness with me; brahma-sāyujyam — merging into brahman; bhagavat-sāyujyam api — and even merging into the Lord
ekātmatām — एकात्मता का अर्थ है; brahma-sāyujyam — ब्रह्म के साथ सायुज्य; bhagavat-sāyujyam api — और भगवान् के साथ सायुज्य भी।
Jīva glosses 'oneness' (ekātmatā). It covers two kinds of merging: dissolving into brahman, and even dissolving into the Lord's own person. Both are refused.
एकात्मता से अभिप्राय है ब्रह्म के साथ सायुज्य, और भगवान् के साथ सायुज्य भी।
sāyujya: 'union, becoming one substance with.' One of the standard liberations. Jīva's point with api ('even') is that these devotees decline not only the impersonal merging but even the higher merging into Bhagavān.
सायुज्य का अर्थ है 'एक ही तत्त्व में मिल जाना, तादात्म्य'। यह प्रसिद्ध मुक्तियों में से एक है। जीव 'भी' (अपि) शब्द से यह दिखाते हैं कि ये भक्त केवल निर्विशेष ब्रह्म में लीनता ही नहीं, अपितु भगवान् में होने वाली उच्चतर लीनता तक को अस्वीकार करते हैं।

This verse is from Kapiladeva's teaching, in the same place. Viśvanātha takes the opening words 'na ekātmatām.' The meaning: they feel no longing for the liberation that consists of becoming one with brahman.
उसी श्री कपिलदेव के वचन में 'नैकात्मताम्' का अर्थ यह है — ब्रह्म के साथ एकता रूप मुक्ति के लिए वे स्पृहा नहीं करते।

nanu — यदि कहो; kena sukhena — किस सुख से; pūrṇāḥ — परिपूर्ण; te — वे; brahma-sukham — ब्रह्म-सुख को; na rocayanti — रुचिकर नहीं मानते।
Now the objection. Filled with what happiness, exactly, do these devotees not care for the bliss of brahman? What joy already satisfies them so completely that they can turn down liberation?
यदि पूछो — वे किस सुख से भरे हैं, जिससे ब्रह्म-सुख को भी रुचिकर नहीं मानते?

He answers by glossing 'absorbed in serving my feet.' The service is done to Kṛṣṇa's two feet with every sense. They are absorbed in that alone. They are not absorbed in knowledge, yoga, and the rest. This is the happiness that fills them.
इसके उत्तर में कहते हैं — समस्त इन्द्रियों से मेरे चरणों की जो सेवा होती है, उसी में वे रत हैं, परन्तु ज्ञान आदि में नहीं।

abhi śāstrābhimukhyena ratā atyāsaktimantaḥ |
abhithe prefix 'abhi-' means: turned toward scripture, in line with the scriptures prefix of abhiratāḥ, glossed by śāstra-abhimukhyena'अभि' यह उपसर्ग
śāstra-abhimukhyenaby facing toward scripture — with their practice guided by śāstra instrumental: the manner of their attachmentशास्त्र की ओर उन्मुख होकर — जिस प्रकार से उनकी आसक्ति है
ratāḥthey are attached, they take delight the root of abhiratāḥरत, लगे हुए (अभिरताः का मूल)
ati-āsakti-mantaḥpossessed of intense attachment — clinging with the deepest fondness the full sense of abhiratāḥअत्यन्त आसक्तिवाले (अभिरताः का पूरा अर्थ)
abhi — the prefix; śāstra-abhimukhyena — by facing scripture; ratāḥ — delighting; ati-āsakti-mantaḥ — full of intense attachment
abhi — 'अभि' उपसर्ग; śāstra-abhimukhyena — शास्त्र की ओर उन्मुख होकर; ratāḥ — रत; ati-āsakti-mantaḥ — अत्यन्त आसक्तिवाले।
He unpacks the word 'abhirata.' The prefix 'abhi-' shows their delight faces toward scripture — their service follows śāstra. 'Rata' means they take delight in it. So 'abhirata' means they cling to that service with the deepest attachment.
'अभि' उपसर्ग शास्त्र की ओर उन्मुखता को कहता है, और 'रत' अत्यन्त आसक्तिवाले को — अर्थात् वे शास्त्र की ओर उन्मुख होकर अत्यन्त आसक्त हैं।
Viśvanātha reads the prefix abhi- in abhiratāḥ as 'toward scripture' (śāstra-abhimukhya) — a niruktic gloss that builds the 'scripture-following' quality he lists next in s5.
विश्वनाथ 'अभिरताः' के 'अभि-' उपसर्ग को 'शास्त्र की ओर' (शास्त्र-अभिमुख्य) पढ़ते हैं — यह एक निरुक्तिपरक व्याख्या है, जो आगे स5 में गिनाए गए 'शास्त्रानुसारित्व' गुण की नींव रखती है।

By this single phrase, five features of devotion are declared. First, it is aimed at the Lord. Second, it takes the form of every sense in action. Third, it is free of fruitive work, dry knowledge, and the rest. Fourth, it follows scripture. Fifth, it is natural and spontaneous. All five are packed into 'absorbed in serving my feet.'
इस श्लोक के द्वारा भक्ति के ये गुण कहे गए हैं — उसका भगवद्विषयक होना, समस्त इन्द्रियों की वृत्ति रूप होना, कर्म-ज्ञान आदि से रहित होना, शास्त्र का अनुसरण करना, और स्वाभाविक होना।

Now he glosses several words at once. 'Having me as their aim' (mad-īhāḥ) means: their one wish is to taste my beauty and sweetness, in me alone. This shows they are empty of every other desire. 'Prasajya' means āsajya — clinging closely, throwing themselves in. 'Heroic deeds' (pauruṣāṇi) means the nectar of my pastimes, like lifting Govardhana. And 'they celebrate' (sabhājayante) means they taste that nectar together, with songs of praise.

So here is the summary. In liberation-as-merging there is no joy of serving the feet, no experience of his beauty and fragrance, and no tasting of the nectar of his pastimes. Because all three are missing there, a devotee does not relish the happiness of brahman. In this way, three reasons have been given for why they have no longing for liberation. This answers the objection raised earlier: they are so full of these three joys in devotion that merging holds nothing for them.
इस प्रकार, चरण-सेवा के आनन्द के अभाव से, सौन्दर्य-सौरभ आदि के अनुभव के अभाव से, और लीलामृत के आस्वादन के अभाव से (ब्रह्म-सुख में ये तीनों नहीं मिलते, इसलिए) वे ब्रह्म-सुख को रुचिकर नहीं मानते — इस प्रकार मुक्ति के प्रति अस्पृहा में तीन हेतु कहे गए।
