L1avataranika
ko nv īśa te pāda-saroja-bhājāṁ
kaḥwhat thing is there? interrogative pronoun, nom. sg.कौन-सी वस्तु
nu— the particle presses the question: what, really? interrogative/emphatic particleभला (प्रश्न में बल देते हुए)
īśaO Lord (Uddhava addresses Kṛṣṇa) vocativeहे ईश (हे प्रभु)
teof you — that is, your genitiveआपके
pāda-saroja-bhājāmfor those who take shelter of / worship your lotus feet genitive pl.; bhājām 'of the sharers/worshippers'जो आपके चरण-कमल का सेवन करते हैं, उन भक्तों के लिए
īśa — O Lord; te pāda-saroja-bhājām — for those who worship your lotus feet; kaḥ nu — what thing indeed [is hard to get]?
īśa — हे ईश; te — आपके; pāda-saroja-bhājām — चरण-कमल का सेवन करने वाले भक्तों के लिए; kaḥ nu — भला कौन-सी वस्तु (दुर्लभ है)
O Lord, Uddhava asks: for people who take shelter of your lotus feet, what is there at all [that they still lack]? The question is rhetorical — he is leading up to saying such devotees want for nothing.
हे प्रभु, जो आपके चरण-कमल का भजन करते हैं, उन भक्तों के लिए भला कौन-सी वस्तु शेष रह जाती है?
Why cited: Adduced (with the following lines) as an example of pure devotion that wants nothing but service — Uddhava telling Kṛṣṇa that a devotee of his feet lacks nothing worth wanting.
क्यों उद्धृत: इसे (आगे की पंक्तियों सहित) उस शुद्ध भक्ति के उदाहरण-रूप में उद्धृत किया गया है जो सेवा के अतिरिक्त और कुछ नहीं चाहती — उद्धव कृष्ण से कहते हैं कि उनके चरणों के भक्त को चाहने योग्य किसी वस्तु का अभाव नहीं।
saroja is literally 'born from a lake', a stock word for 'lotus'; here it just means the lotus of Kṛṣṇa's feet. bhājām, from bhaj 'to share in, to serve', names the devotees as those who partake of his feet.
'सरोज' का शाब्दिक अर्थ 'सरोवर से उत्पन्न' है — यह कमल का रूढ़ शब्द है; यहाँ कृष्ण के चरण-कमल। 'भाजाम्' √भज् 'सेवन करना, भाग लेना' से बना है, जो भक्तों को आपके चरणों का सेवन करने वालों के रूप में नाम देता है।
L2avataranika
sudurlabho’rtheṣu caturṣv apīha |
su-durlabhaḥvery hard to obtain nom. sg., agreeing with the implied 'what thing' (kaḥ) of L1अत्यन्त दुर्लभ
artheṣu caturṣuamong the four human goals locative pl., 'among the four aims'चारों पुरुषार्थों में
apieven — even counting all four emphatic particleभी
ihahere, in this world adverbइस लोक में
iha — here in this world; caturṣu artheṣu api — even among the four human goals; kaḥ nu su-durlabhaḥ — what indeed is hard to get [for such devotees]?
iha — इस लोक में; artheṣu caturṣu api — चारों पुरुषार्थों में भी; su-durlabhaḥ — (जो) अत्यन्त दुर्लभ हो
Completing the question from the previous line: even among the four goals people chase in this life, what is really hard for such a devotee to get? The four goals are named in the commentary. The point is that nothing among them is out of reach for one who serves Kṛṣṇa's feet.
जो इस लोक के चारों पुरुषार्थों में भी अत्यन्त दुर्लभ हो — ऐसी कौन-सी वस्तु उनके लिए बची है?
artha here does not mean 'wealth' specifically; it means puruṣārtha, a 'human aim/goal'. The four are then spelled out by the commentator (dharma, artha, kāma, mokṣa).
यहाँ 'अर्थ' का अभिप्राय विशेष रूप से 'धन' नहीं, अपितु पुरुषार्थ — मनुष्य का साध्य — है। इन चारों को टीकाकार आगे धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष के रूप में स्पष्ट करते हैं।
L3conclusion
tathāpi nāhaṁ pravṛṇomi bhūman
tathā apiand yet, even so — though all four are within reach concessive: 'nevertheless'फिर भी
nanot negationनहीं
ahamI (Uddhava, speaking of himself) nom. sg.मैं
pravṛṇomido choose / do accept [any of them] pra-√vṛ, 1st sg. pres.: 'I opt for, I prefer'वरण करता हूँ, चुनता हूँ
bhūmanO boundless one, O unlimited Lord vocativeहे भूमन् (हे असीम)
bhūman — O boundless Lord; tathā api — even so; aham — I; na pravṛṇomi — do not choose [any of the four]; …
bhūman — हे असीम; tathā api — फिर भी; aham — मैं; na pravṛṇomi — (इनमें से किसी को) वरण नहीं करता
And yet, O boundless Lord, I choose none of them. Even though all four goals are easily within reach for a devotee, Uddhava says he himself does not opt for any of them. The reason follows in the last line.
फिर भी, हे असीम प्रभु, मैं इनमें से किसी को नहीं चुनता।
bhūman (voc. of bhūmán) means 'the vast, the plenary, the unlimited' — an address to Kṛṣṇa as the boundless whole; here simply 'O unlimited one'.
'भूमन्' ('भूमन्' का सम्बोधन) का अर्थ है 'विशाल, पूर्ण, असीम' — कृष्ण को अनन्त समग्र रूप में सम्बोधन; यहाँ केवल 'हे असीम'।
L4conclusion
bhavat-padāmbhoja-niṣevaṇotsukaḥ ||
bhavat-pada-ambhoja-niṣevaṇa-utsukaḥbecause I am eager only to serve the lotus of your feet bahuvrīhi, nom. sg.; utsuka 'longing for', the whole compound gives the reason for 'I choose none'क्योंकि मैं तो आपके चरण-कमल की सेवा के लिए ही उत्कण्ठित हूँ
bhavat-pada-ambhoja-niṣevaṇa-utsukaḥ — [being] eager to serve the lotus feet of you; [therefore] na pravṛṇomi — I choose none [of the four].
bhavat-pada-ambhoja-niṣevaṇa-utsukaḥ — (मैं) आपके चरण-कमल की सेवा के लिए उत्कण्ठित हूँ
The reason: I am set on serving your lotus feet and nothing else. Because Uddhava longs only for the service of Kṛṣṇa's feet, he turns down all four goals of life. Devotion itself is what he wants, not the rewards devotion could fetch.
क्योंकि मैं तो केवल आपके चरण-कमल की सेवा के लिए ही उत्कण्ठित हूँ।
ambhoja, like saroja, is another 'lotus' word ('water-born'). niṣevaṇa is 'attending on, serving'; utsuka is 'keenly longing'. The compound reads: 'one whose longing is for the service of your lotus feet.'
'अम्भोज' भी 'सरोज' की भाँति कमल का ही शब्द है ('जल से उत्पन्न')। 'निषेवण' अर्थात् सेवा-परिचर्या; 'उत्सुक' अर्थात् तीव्र उत्कण्ठा वाला। पूरा समास इस प्रकार पढ़ा जाता है — 'जिसकी उत्कण्ठा आपके चरण-कमल की सेवा के लिए है'।

caturṣu dharmārtha-kāma-mokṣeṣu madhye ko durlabhaḥ ? ||
caturṣu'among the four' — the verse's word, now specified picking up caturṣu from L2 as the word to be explainedचारों में
dharma-artha-kāma-mokṣeṣu madhyemeans: within the set of dharma (duty), artha (wealth), kāma (enjoyment), and mokṣa (liberation) locative + madhye 'in the midst of', naming the four aimsधर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष — इन चारों के बीच
kaḥ durlabhaḥwhich one is hard to get? — i.e. not one of them is restating the verse's rhetorical questionकौन दुर्लभ है?
caturṣu — [the verse's] 'among the four' [means] dharma-artha-kāma-mokṣeṣu madhye — within dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa; kaḥ durlabhaḥ — which is hard to get [for such a devotee]?
caturṣu dharma-artha-kāma-mokṣeṣu madhye — धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष — इन चारों के बीच; kaḥ durlabhaḥ — कौन दुर्लभ है
Viśvanātha simply names what 'the four' are: dharma (right conduct), artha (wealth), kāma (enjoyment), and mokṣa (liberation) — the four standard aims of human life. Then he restates the verse's question: which of these four is actually hard for a devotee to obtain? The expected answer is 'none of them' — for one who serves Kṛṣṇa's feet, all four are trivial to get, which is exactly why Uddhava can dismiss them all.
'चारों' अर्थात् धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष — इन चारों के बीच कौन दुर्लभ है?
The four are the puruṣārthas, the four recognized goals of a human life. Dharma is righteous duty; artha is material means/wealth; kāma is sanctioned enjoyment; mokṣa is release from rebirth. The commentator lists them only to make the verse's 'four' explicit.
ये चारों पुरुषार्थ हैं — मनुष्य-जीवन के चार मान्य लक्ष्य। धर्म अर्थात् धर्ममय कर्तव्य; अर्थ अर्थात् भौतिक साधन-धन; काम अर्थात् शास्त्र-सम्मत भोग; मोक्ष अर्थात् पुनर्जन्म से मुक्ति। टीकाकार इन्हें केवल श्लोक के 'चार' शब्द को स्पष्ट करने के लिए गिनाते हैं।
