Here something further is said to those who are averse; so he speaks, beginning with "kiṁ ca."
Here "taste" is, through a prior saṁskāra, the knowledge of excellence regarding the words that expound the truth of devotion — the Śrīmad Bhāgavata and the like. That very taste awakens the truth of devotion, that is, instills faith according to the word. Reasoning alone, dry, is not at all the awakener; rather, it does so only when accompanied by that taste — as will be said: "skilled in scripture and in reasoning."
O greatly compassionate one! To those eager to understand who say, "the respective greatness of the threefold devotion, though heard, is not rightly grasped because of its utter unprecedentedness, so show the reasoning too" — he replies that truly this is utterly unprecedented; yet, from absorption in practice, when even a slight taste has arisen, through the purity of mind the truth of devotion is understood of itself, and not by reasoning alone. So he speaks, beginning with "kiṁ ca."
Taste itself, of itself — when even a slight taste is present, the reasoning favorable to it too shines forth of itself; that is the meaning. But reasoning alone, devoid of taste, is not at all the awakener. (And "asyāḥ" means: of this reasoning.)
Now something further is said to those who are averse; so he speaks, beginning with "kiṁ ca."

Here something further is addressed to those who are turned away; and so he speaks in the passage beginning "kiṁ ca."
Here "taste" is the sense — born of a prior saṁskāra [saṁskāra — in Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika and Yoga, a latent impression laid down by past experience that later ripens into a spontaneous inclination or memory; here, the residue of past pious contact that now surfaces as an instinctive relish] — that the words expounding the truth of devotion, the Śrīmad Bhāgavata and the like, are supreme. That very taste awakens one to the truth of devotion, that is, it instills faith in accordance with the word; whereas reasoning alone, dry, does not do so at all, but only when joined with that taste — as will be said: "skilled in scripture and in reasoning."
O greatly compassionate one! To those eager to understand, who say, "the respective greatness of the threefold devotion, though heard, is not rightly grasped, because it is so utterly unprecedented, so show us the reasoning as well" — he replies: true, this is indeed utterly unprecedented; yet, out of absorption in practice, once even a slight taste has arisen, the truth of devotion is grasped of itself, through the purity of the mind, and not by reasoning alone. So he speaks in the passage beginning "kiṁ ca."

Taste itself, of its own accord: once even a slight taste is present, the reasoning favorable to it too shines forth of itself — that is the meaning. But reasoning alone, devoid of taste, does not do so at all.
asyāḥ: of this reasoning.
