In the passage beginning "tathā," he shows devotion's very want of firm footing.

By "the ancients" are meant the Vārtika-kāra and others who follow the maxim "reasoning has no firm ground" [tarka — in Nyāya, hypothetical or reductio reasoning employed to support inference; the cited Brahma-sūtra maxim tarko 'pratiṣṭhānāt holds that such reasoning, lacking self-established footing, cannot by itself settle a supra-sensory matter; here it is turned to show that mere argument cannot found the truth of devotion]. Take some thesis. Skilled reasoners have worked it out by inference. They have taken great pains and established it firmly. Grant all of that — the point stands as proved. (The sentence finishes in the next line: even so, it gets overturned.)
Why cited: A maxim from earlier authorities, cited to show that reasoning has no firm footing — even a hard-won conclusion can be overturned.
anumātṛ (from anumāna): in Nyāya, anumāna is inference — a recognized means of valid knowledge that moves from a sign to what it always goes with (from smoke to fire). Here the word is not praising inference; the maxim's whole point is that a conclusion reached this way carries no finality.

Then others come along who are sharper still. They prove the very same point the other way round — the exact opposite conclusion. So the first proof does not hold. This is why mere reasoning has no firm ground: a better arguer can always overturn it.

apratiṣṭhatām — the want of firm footing; eva — this very thing; darśayati — he shows; tathā iti — [in the passage] beginning 'tathā'.
Here Rūpa points out one thing: that reasoning has no firm footing — it never settles. He does this in the passage that opens with the word 'tathā.'
apratiṣṭhā (Nyāya/Vedānta): 'no fixed ground, no resting-place.' The term is lifted from the Brahma-sūtra maxim quoted next; here it names the built-in instability of mere argument.

The verse says 'by the ancients.' Who are they? They are the ones who live by the maxim 'reasoning has no firm ground' — the Vārtika-kāra and others of his kind. So 'the ancients' means these logicians who themselves admit that argument cannot stand on its own.
Why cited: the Brahma-sūtra maxim 'tarko 'pratiṣṭhānāt' is adduced to show that even the ancient logicians grant that reasoning has no firm ground of its own.
tarka (Nyāya): hypothetical or reductio reasoning used to prop up an inference. The quoted Brahma-sūtra 2.1.12, 'tarko 'pratiṣṭhānāt,' says such reasoning has no self-standing footing and so cannot by itself settle a supra-sensory matter; the commentator turns it to show that mere argument cannot found the truth of devotion.

The verse says 'others yet more accomplished.' This means: among the logicians, the ones who are more expert still. So the very people who first argue out a thesis can be outmatched by sharper logicians who then argue the opposite.
