atulatvād apāratvād āpto’sau durvigāhatām |
spṛṣṭaḥ paraṁ taṭasthena rasābdhir madhuro mayā ||
The verse — decoded
L1conclusion
atulatvād apāratvād āpto’sau durvigāhatām |
atulatvātbecause it has no equal ablative of reason; the first of two causesक्योंकि इसकी कोई तुलना नहीं
apāratvātand because it has no far shore — it is boundless ablative of reason; a-pāra = 'without a further bank'और इसका कोई पार (दूसरा तट) नहीं
āptaḥhas come to / has reached past participle agreeing with rasābdhiḥ (L2)पहुँच गया है
asauthis [ocean] — 'that one over there' parokṣa 'that' rather than 'this'; refers forward to rasābdhir madhuraḥ in L2वह (सुदूर मधुर रस-सागर)
durvigāhatāmthe state of being all but impossible to plunge into accusative goal of āptaḥ: 'has reached the condition of…'
asau — this [ocean]; atulatvāt — because it has no equal; apāratvāt — and because it has no far shore; durvigāhatām — the state of being hard to plunge into; āptaḥ — has reached.
This sweet ocean of rasa has no equal and no far shore. For those two reasons it has become almost impossible to plunge into. Rūpa is closing the whole book, and he closes it on humility.
The final verse of the Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi — Rūpa Gosvāmī's signing-off confession. Note the printed mūla reads atulatvāt ('no equal'); Viśvanātha's pratīka below reads atalatvāt ('no bottom'), pairing it with apāra ('no shore') into a single ocean image — a genuine variant, unpacked at s6 and s8.
L2conclusion
spṛṣṭaḥ paraṁ taṭasthena rasābdhir madhuro mayā ||
spṛṣṭaḥhas been [no more than] touched nominative, agreeing with rasābdhiḥ; passiveकेवल छू भर लिया गया
paraṁonly that, and nothing more adverb 'merely'; caps how little was doneबस इतना ही, इससे अधिक नहीं
taṭasthenaby [me] standing on the bank instrumental of agent with the passive spṛṣṭaḥ; taṭa-stha = 'standing on the shore'. The loaded word the commentators unpack — Viśvanātha reads it literally as standing on the bankतट पर खड़े रहकर (मेरे द्वारा)
rasābdhiḥ madhuraḥthe sweet ocean of rasa nominative subject; rasa-abdhi = 'ocean of rasa'मधुर रस का सागर
mayāby me [Rūpa] instrumental of agent, in contrast to the masters who never entered itमेरे द्वारा
madhuraḥ rasābdhiḥ — the sweet ocean of rasa; taṭasthena mayā — by me, standing only on its bank; paraṁ spṛṣṭaḥ — has been merely touched.
The sweet ocean of rasa — I have done no more than touch it, and that only from the bank. I never plunged in. So Rūpa signs off: what I have handed you is a fingertip's drop from an ocean with no bottom and no shore.
taṭastha literally = 'standing on the taṭa (bank)'. The word ordinarily also carries 'neutral, standing aloof' — a double life the closing commentary turns on (see s9 for Viśvanātha's literal reading, s11 for the śleṣa).

The topic now coming to a close is madhura-rasa together with its whole retinue (parikara) — a rasa so vast that its defining marks have not all been laid out. Viśvanātha flags that unfinishedness to set up the humility of the final verse.
parikara — the supporting cast of a rasa: its vibhāvas, anubhāvas, sāttvikas, helpers and the rest.

Here is the doubt Viśvanātha raises. This madhura-rasa is so vast that even the ancient rasika poets never displayed it, so it stayed unknown. Even great-souled devotees brimming with prema never once reached it. Then how have you — Rūpa and your circle — managed to describe it and even taste it? To that question, Viśvanātha says, Rūpa answers not with a boast but with humility, in the verse 'atalatvāt…'.

Notice the verse never says for whom the ocean is hard to enter. Viśvanātha reads that silence as deliberate: it is hard for everyone. For the ancient masters famed for plunging into rasa — Śukadeva and his kind. For the moderns — Līlāśuka, Jayadeva and their kind. For all of them, without exception.
Śrī Līlāśuka is Bilvamaṅgala Ṭhākura, author of the Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta; Jayadeva, author of the Gīta-govinda — named as the great modern rasika poets.

The word durvigāha ('hard to fathom') is not merely saying it is difficult. Viśvanātha reads it strictly: no one plunges in all the way. A fingertip's touch, yes; the whole depth, never.

Viśvanātha counts two reasons in the verse — the two ablatives: atalatvāt (it has no bottom) and apāratvāt (it has no far shore).
Viśvanātha's pratīka here reads atala- ('no bottom'), which pairs neatly with apāra ('no shore') into one ocean image — a floor-less, bank-less sea. The printed mūla (L1) reads atula- ('no equal'); this is the textual variant flagged at L1.

The two reasons map onto two axes. One is jāti, its kind or quality; the other is pramāṇa, its sheer measure. One reason is about what sort of thing it is; the other about how much of it there is.

Now the two axes are cashed out. Bottomless (atala): because in kind it stands above the other rasa-oceans — dāsya (servitude) and the rest. Shoreless (apāra): because in sheer measure it outstrips them. Higher in quality, larger in quantity — so no floor, no far bank.

And by me? Viśvanātha draws out the whole image. I cannot manage even a whiff of going in. I only stand on the bank. From there I stretched out one finger, lifted a single droplet, and set it on my own tongue. That is all 'touched from the bank' means. The entire Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi is that one drop.
Viśvanātha reads taṭastha in its plain spatial sense: 'standing on the taṭa, the bank'. The word ordinarily also means 'neutral, standing aloof' — the second sense the closing commentary (s11) turns on.

Viṣṇudāsa closes the book. Yes, Rūpa has laid out the whole reality of ujjvala-rasa — a wonder no one had seen or heard, hard to grasp even for the most expert modern devotees — in unprecedented detail. And yet this final verse shows Rūpa feeling he still has not done it full justice: partly because his own heart wanted more, and partly because rasa is by its very nature inexhaustible. Then comes the śleṣa. taṭastha reads two ways at once: 'standing on the ocean's bank', and 'standing aloof, indifferent'. And the very fact that the verse says 'that ocean' (asau, pointing far off) rather than 'this' pushes the sense of distance further still — it heightens how completely he stands outside it. The two reasons follow: measureless, and for that reason endless — so it is durvigāha, plunged into only with pain. He signs off with a grammarian's touch, naming the affix Pāṇini assigns for an action 'done with difficulty'.
Viṣṇudāsa is the Svātma-pramodinī commentator. The śleṣa on taṭastha — 'on the bank' / 'detached' — is the closing verse's headline double meaning, and Viṣṇudāsa gives both readings rather than settling one. The grammar note cites Pāṇini 3.3.126 (īṣad-duḥsuṣu kṛcchrākṛcchrārtheṣu khal): after īṣat / dus / su, the khal affix on a root expresses that the action is done easily or with difficulty, in a passive-object sense — so dur + vi√gāh + khal = durvigāha, 'plunged into only with difficulty'.
