When Hari seizes her in a forceful embrace, Rādhā answers by raking him with the tips of her nails.

The verse is an udāharaṇa — an illustrative verse, introduced by yathā. By Viśvanātha's avataraṇikā below, it displays the first, and even more rasa-rich, part of the two lovers' līlā-vilāsa (playful love-sport).
यह श्लोक उदाहरण-श्लोक है, जो 'यथा' कहकर आरम्भ होता है। नीचे विश्वनाथ की अवतरणिका के अनुसार यह दोनों प्रेमियों के लीला-विलास का प्रथम एवं और भी अधिक रसमय भाग दिखाता है।

By Rādhā, doing all this, Hari was given pleasure greater than even love-union itself. Her playful resistance delighted him more than the union did.
यों करती हुई राधा ने हरि (कृष्ण) को रति से भी अधिक सुख दिया।

The sakhīs press their eyes to the gaps in the lattice-window and, together, drink in the love-play of the two. To set this up he gives the verse beginning balena.
