The Yamunā — the sun's daughter — is calm now, emptied of her crowd of waves.
An udāharaṇa of naukhelā, 'the boat-play' — one of the sports of union (sambhoga) — quoted from Padyāvalī 270. The scene: Kṛṣṇa plays the boatman (nāvika) ferrying the gopīs across the Yamunā, and Rādhā speaks to him (so Viśvanātha, who notes at s5 'Rādhā says to Kṛṣṇa'). Here she answers his reassurance that the crossing is safe.

'And the boat is new and strong' — yes, what you say is perfectly true. She grants Kṛṣṇa's whole reassurance: the river is calm, the boat is sound.

— that here, Mādhava, it is you who are the boatman, and you are cañcala. The whole wit sits on that one word. On the surface: an unsteady boatman who sets the boat rocking — a real danger midstream. Underneath: a fickle, restless flirt. The river is calm, the boat is sound, every reassurance is true; the only danger left on this crossing is the boatman himself.

Viśvanātha is here unfolding a covering-and-uncovering play of the face; on it he builds the two technical terms he defines next, vighaṭana (s3) and saṅghaṭṭana (s4), before turning to the verse's own words at s5.
