samajani davād vitrastānāṁ kim ārta-ravo gavāṁ
samajanidid there arise, did there come to be aorist passive read in the active sense ('did … arise?'); Viṣṇudāsa (s5) grounds this form on Pā. 3.1.61.
davātout of a wildfire (dava = forest fire) ablative of cause — 'because of a forest fire'.
vitrastānāṁof the terrified [cows] genitive agreeing with gavām.
kimcould it be that…? kim of conjecture (vitarka), not a plain question — 'I wonder whether…'.
gavāṁof the cowsगायों का
kim — could it be that; davāt vitrastānāṁ gavāṁ — of the cows terrified by a wildfire; ārta-ravaḥ — a cry of distress; samajani — arose?
Could it be that a cry of distress went up from the cows, terrified by a wildfire — and that is what pulled him away?
An udāharaṇa of the secondary (gauṇa) prema-vaicittya — the anxiety of separation that springs from a mere semblance of a cause (kāraṇābhāsa), as against the primary, causeless kind; so Viśvanātha's lead-in (s1). Quoted from Vidagdha-mādhava 5.46; the whole verse is Rādhā lamenting in the forest, guessing at three possible reasons Kṛṣṇa left her.

Śrī Jīva notes only this much: in this verse the prema-vaicittya is to be gathered from the surrounding scene of the play itself.
prema-vaicittya: the mark of separation-mood in which the lover, though the beloved is present, is seized by the dread of losing him and grieves as if already parted — here read off the play's context rather than stated in the verse.

Viśvanātha frames it: Rūpa has already shown the primary prema-vaicittya, the kind that needs no cause at all. Now he illustrates the secondary kind too — the kind that springs from a mere semblance of a cause. So he gives the verse 'yathā vā…'.

Viṣṇudāsa: to voice a wonder greater even than the previous verse, and again in Rādhā's own words, Rūpa gives a plainer illustration — 'yathā vā…', 'samajani…'. After the private love-play, though she roams the forest with Kṛṣṇa among her girlfriends, Rādhā fails to notice her own beloved standing right at her side; all at once she swoons, and — pinning his causeless leaving on this or that reason — laments in grief. Word-gloss: 'davāt' = from a wildfire; 'vitrasta' = frightened; the cows' 'ārta-rava' = a cry that betrays their distress; 'samajani' = arose (the optional ciṇ-aorist in active sense); 'kim' here means 'could it be…?', a conjecture.
The grammatical citation is Pāṇini 3.1.61 (dīpa-jana-budha-pūri-tāyi-pyāyibhyaḥ), adduced to justify the aorist ciṇ form samajani carrying an active sense. The staging details here (the private krīḍā, the girlfriend-band, the swoon) are Viṣṇudāsa's own.

Viṣṇudāsa: knowing in her own heart that this one too cannot be, she guesses at a third cause — 'vyaraci…'. 'By some beloved' — after the fashion of 'some girl of greater charms is sporting with Kṛṣṇa…' [Gīta-govinda 7.13]; for by the very nature of rasa, the rival's superiority and her own smallness rise up in her at the very same instant. 'hūti' = a call sent through a girlfriend or such; 'nibhṛta' = in a private place; 'vyaraci' = was arranged.
The quoted half-line is Gīta-govinda 7.13, brought in as the model for Rādhā's third guess — the standard rasa-picture of Kṛṣṇa dallying with a more gifted rival, which is why the rival's eminence and her own lowliness surface together. The reasoning here is Viṣṇudāsa's.

One may object: Kṛṣṇa has endless things that could call him away — why single out just these three? The answer lies in 'yat…': because it was here that he left me, and 'in the forest' — a deserted wood, not a peopled village where any number of errands might have drawn him.

The point: in a lonely forest, so abruptly, his leaving me without one of these three causes simply could not happen — so one of them must be the reason.

By calling him 'lotus-eyed,' and by the maxim 'as the form, so the virtues that dwell within,' his beauty is taken to imply a wealth of good qualities — compassion, gratitude, cleverness, and countless more. And one so full of virtue could all the less abandon her for no reason. This is left as a suggestion (dhvani), not stated in so many words.
The nyāya maps beauty of form onto inner worth: the visible loveliness ('lotus-eyed') stands for the invisible virtues (compassion, gratitude, wit). Here it does one job — reinforcing that so good a person would not leave Rādhā without a cause; the maxim is not pressed further than that.
