candrāvalyāḥ māna-vṛttāntaṁ pṛcchantīṁ bhadrām — to Bhadrā, asking about the account of Candrāvalī's māna; vṛndā āha — Vṛndā spoke; alam — atiśayena, 'exceedingly'; kīrṇaṁ — vyāptaṁ, 'pervaded'; kalayantī — paśyantī, 'beholding'; priyakaḥ — kadambaḥ, the kadamba tree; sakhyāṁ sa-tṛṣṇaṁ dṛśaṁ yathā syāt tathā adiśata — she cast a glance upon her friend so that it was full of longing; adiśata — dattavatī, 'she gave'.
Viśvanātha sets the scene: Bhadrā was asking Vṛndā to tell what happened with Candrāvalī's māna, and Vṛndā answers with this verse. Then he decodes the words: alam is 'exceedingly'; kīrṇaṁ is 'pervaded'; kalayantī is 'beholding'; priyaka is the kadamba tree; adiśata is 'she cast' — and what she cast, upon her friend, was a glance full of longing.
The speakers are named by Viśvanātha: Vṛndā is narrating to Bhadrā; the verse is Vṛndā's reply.

Viśvanātha spells out what the silent glance is saying: 'O friend, this forest has shattered my māna; so — what should be done? Just do whatever is right and true.' She conveys all this by the look alone. Then he adds a technical point: the recognized signs that māna is subsiding are reaching for the beloved on one's own, smiling, and so on — an earlier list that trailed off with 'ādi' (etc.). Sending a longing glance to a friend, as here, should also be counted among those signs.
aṅkas of mānopaśamana ('signs that māna is subsiding'): an earlier passage in this chapter listed svayaṁ-grāha (embracing the beloved of one's own accord), smita (a smile), and closed with ādi ('and so on'). Viśvanātha reads the present sakhī-dṛk-preraṇa (directing a longing glance at one's friend) as another item falling under that open 'ādi'.
