An udāharaṇa of rasāntara — the māna is broken not within śṛṅgāra but by a different rasa (the terror of the demon's roar). It falls under yādṛcchika, a spontaneous, unsought uddīpana: no planned move dissolves the anger; a chance event does. Viśvanātha names it 'rasāntarasya udāharaṇam' at 15.133.

And the girlfriends' cleverness — every clever ploy of theirs — had suddenly gone slack as well. Nothing they tried touched the anger.

viśākhāyāḥ kopa-jvara — the fever that is Viśākhā's anger; -haraṇa-mantra — the mantra that removes it; -pratinidhim — a stand-in for that very mantra (describing the roar of L4)
Her anger is pictured as a fever, and the thing that would cure it as a healing mantra. What came next did the mantra's own work — it was a perfect stand-in for it.

The bull-demon Ariṣṭa let out a harsh, grating bellow, shriek and all. That terrifying roar was the stand-in mantra: where no coaxing or clever ploy had worked, sheer fright dissolved the anger. A different rasa broke the māna.

In the last verse the cloud-roars broke the woman's māna by kindling desire — that stays inside śṛṅgāra, and it was fitting. Now, with 'yathā vā' ('or, as in this case'), Viśvanātha gives an example where a wholly different rasa does the breaking.

Viśvanātha frames the speech: Kṛṣṇa is speaking to Subala in the verse that opens 'upāyeṣu'. So the 'O friend' of the verse is Subala.

'Mantra-substitute' means simply 'as good as the mantra' — the roar did exactly what the healing spell would have done.

He backs the gloss from the lexicon: the Amarakośa lists ukṣā alongside bhadra and balīvarda as words for a bull. So ukṣa-danuja is literally the bull-shaped demon.
Why cited: cited from the Amarakośa to establish that ukṣā means 'bull/ox', grounding the reading of ukṣa-danuja as the bull-formed demon Ariṣṭa.
