athavedaṁ priyoktitvāt sāmodāharaṇaṁ bhavet |
athavāor else — floating a second way to class this very verse the suspended alternative; it re-frames the earlier reading, it does not cancel itअथवा (यह पूर्व पाठ को फिर से प्रस्तुत करता है, उसे रद्द नहीं करता)
idaṁthis [same verse just given]यह (पद्य)
priyoktitvātbecause it is the lover's coaxing, endearing speech ablative of cause; priya-ukti = agreeable, loving wordsक्योंकि इसमें प्रिय एवं स्नेहभरे वचन हैं
sāmodāharaṇaṁ bhavetwould then count as an example of sāma — winning her over by gentle words sāma = the first of the four upāyasयह साम का उदाहरण हो सकता है
athavā — or else; idaṁ — this same verse; priyoktitvāt — because it is loving, coaxing speech; sāma-udāharaṇaṁ bhavet — would be an example of sāma (gentle conciliation).
athavā — अथवा (पूर्व पाठ को फिर से देखता है, रद्द नहीं करता); idaṁ — यह पद्य; priyoktitvāt — क्योंकि इसमें प्रिय स्नेहभरे वचन हैं; sāmodāharaṇaṁ bhavet — यह साम का उदाहरण हो सकता है।
Or else, take the very same verse another way. Because it is a lover's coaxing speech, it could count as an example of sāma — winning the beloved over by gentle, agreeable words.
अथवा यह पद्य साम का उदाहरण भी हो सकता है, क्योंकि इसमें प्रिय एवं स्नेहभरे वचन कहे गए हैं। पहले जो पाठ दिया गया था, यह 'अथवा' उसे रद्द नहीं करता, केवल दूसरी दृष्टि से देखता है।
sāma is the first of the four upāyas (sāma, dāna, bheda, daṇḍa — kind words, a gift, sowing a sense of division, force). The live question across L1-L2 is whether Kṛṣṇa's speech pacifies Rādhā by sāma (sheer coaxing) or by bheda (making her feel singled out above every rival).
साम चार उपायों (साम, दान, भेद, दण्ड — मीठे वचन, भेंट, फूट डालना, बल) में पहला है। L1-L2 में यह प्रश्न चलता रहता है कि कृष्ण के वचन राधा को साम से (केवल मनाकर) शान्त करते हैं या भेद से (उसे सब सपत्नियों से ऊपर विशिष्ट अनुभव कराकर)।

nāyakasya sva-vacasā bhaṅgyāyaṁ bheda īryate ||
nāyakasyathe hero's — Kṛṣṇa's genitive, going with sva-vacasāनायक के (अपने वचन के साथ जुड़ता हुआ)
sva-vacasāby his own words instrumental of meansअपने वचन से (साधन-रूप में)
bhaṅgyāthrough a crooked, indirect turn of phrase instrumental; bhaṅgī = oblique speech that says one thing on the surface and means another underneathवक्रोक्ति के द्वारा (जो ऊपर से एक बात कहती और भीतर दूसरी)
ayaṁthis [mode of it]यह
bhedaḥis [a case of] bheda — pacifying her by setting her apart from every rivalभेद (उपाय)
īryateis [so] declared passiveकहा जाता है
nāyakasya sva-vacasā — by the hero's own words; bhaṅgyā — through an oblique turn of phrase; ayaṁ — this mode; bhedaḥ — is bheda; īryate — is declared.
nāyakasya — नायक के; sva-vacasā — अपने वचन से; bhaṅgyā — वक्रोक्ति के द्वारा (ऊपर से एक बात, भीतर दूसरी); ayaṁ — यह; bhedaḥ — भेद; īryate — कहा जाता है।
By the hero's own words, spoken in a crooked, indirect way, this is declared to be bheda. Kṛṣṇa neither scolds nor bribes; his oblique self-blame quietly sets Rādhā apart from all the other gopīs, and that 'division' is what melts her sulk.
जब नायक अपने वचन से, वक्रोक्ति के द्वारा — जो ऊपर से एक बात कहती और भीतर दूसरी — यह करता है, तब उसे भेद कहा जाता है।
bheda, the third upāya: here not sowing discord but making the beloved feel singled out above all rivals. Watch the bhaṅgī — the words blame Kṛṣṇa on the surface while in fact exalting Rādhā.
भेद तीसरा उपाय है — यहाँ फूट डालना नहीं, अपितु प्रिया को सब सपत्नियों से ऊपर विशिष्ट अनुभव कराना। वक्रोक्ति को देखिए — वचन ऊपर से कृष्ण की निन्दा करते हैं, पर वस्तुतः राधा को ऊँचा उठाते हैं।

Speaker and setting, on Viśvanātha's reading (s5): Kṛṣṇa addresses the māninī — the sulking — Śrī Rādhā. The verse is Vidagdha-mādhava 4.41, cited (per the lead-in) to illustrate bhaṅgyā svamāhātmya-prakāśanam, revealing one's own greatness through indirection.

'—and passing over the love-stricken maidens of Vraja as well, O fair-faced one, it is you, you alone, that I wait upon.' Here the sting turns to honey: what Kṛṣṇa calls his 'impropriety' — neglecting every other woman — is exactly the confession that Rādhā is loved above them all. The bhaṅgī is complete: self-blame on the surface, Rādhā's supremacy underneath.

Śrī Jīva reads the structure of the kārikā. With 'athavā' Rūpa takes the example already given and re-frames it; then with the 'nāyakasya' half-line he sets out to establish a second way of classing it, and illustrates it accordingly with 'yathā...'. And 'my own young women reaching the very last stage' rests on the gopīs' own words — 'the goddesses in their aerial cars, their cores driven by desire' (Bhāgavata 10.21.12) — for it was you gopīs yourselves who described them so.

Why cited: Bhāgavata 10.21.12 (the gopīs' veṇu-gīta) is adduced to ground 'reaching the last stage': the heavenly goddesses' love-madness stands on the gopīs' own testimony, not on any exaggeration of Kṛṣṇa's.
क्यों उद्धृत: भागवत 10.21.12 (गोपियों का वेणु-गीत) 'अन्तिम दशा को प्राप्त करना' सिद्ध करने के लिए उद्धृत है: स्वर्ग की देवियों की प्रेमोन्मत्तता गोपियों के अपने ही वचन पर टिकी है, कृष्ण की किसी अतिशयोक्ति पर नहीं।

Viśvanātha spells out why Rūpa reaches for 'or else... sāma.' In this verse the bheda is not stated outright. And if you say it is merely suggested, suggestion is an unreliable ground — it turns on who the listener is and whether they are equipped to catch it. So the safer classing is sāma. That is his implied point.
इस पद्य में भेद न तो साक्षात् कहा गया अर्थ (अभिधेय) है, और यदि उसे केवल सूचित (व्यङ्ग्य) भी मानें तो व्यञ्जना अनैकान्तिक है — वह श्रोता की विशिष्टता आदि पर निर्भर करने से अनिश्चित रहती है; ऐसा अभिप्राय है।
abhidhā vs vyañjanā: the abhidheya is what the words denote outright; the vyaṅgya is what they merely hint. Viśvanātha's move — since bheda is neither plainly stated here nor dependably suggested, the verse is better filed under sāma.
अभिधा और व्यञ्जना: अभिधेय वह है जो शब्द साक्षात् कहते हैं; व्यङ्ग्य वह जिसे वे केवल संकेत करते हैं। विश्वनाथ का तर्क — चूँकि भेद यहाँ न स्पष्टतः कहा गया है और न विश्वसनीय रूप से सूचित होता है, इसलिए यह पद्य साम के अन्तर्गत रखना अधिक उचित है।
