atha sūcī-kaṭāha-nyāyena prathamaṁ nirhetuka-mānasyopaśamam āha—nirhetuko mānaḥ svayam eva śāmyet, na tatra cikīrṣety arthaḥ |
athanow [taking up the topic]अब — प्रकरण का आरम्भ
sūcī-kaṭāha-nyāyenaby the needle-and-cauldron maxim — settle the quick, easy job first instr. of manner; the nyāya for doing the smaller task before the largerसूची-कटाह न्याय के अनुसार — बड़े काम से पहले छोटा काम कर लेने का न्याय; करण-रूप 'से'
prathamaṁ nirhetuka-mānasya upaśamam āhahe first states the subsiding of causeless māna prathamaṁ = 'first', i.e. the easy case comes firstपहले निर्हेतुक मान के उपशम (शान्ति) को कहते हैं — 'प्रथम' अर्थात् सरल पक्ष पहले
nirhetuko mānaḥ svayam eva śāmyetcauseless māna would subside all on its own eva = 'entirely by itself'निर्हेतुक मान अपने आप ही शान्त हो जाए — 'एव' अर्थात् पूर्णतः स्वयं ही
na tatra cikīrṣāno deliberate effort to end it is called for there cikīrṣā = the wish-to-act, desiderative of √kṛ; nothing need be doneवहाँ कुछ करने की इच्छा नहीं — चिकीर्षा अर्थात् कुछ करने की अभिलाषा; कुछ करना आवश्यक नहीं
iti arthaḥthat is the meaningऐसा अर्थ है
atha — now; sūcī-kaṭāha-nyāyena — by the needle-and-cauldron maxim; prathamaṁ nirhetuka-mānasya upaśamam āha — he first states the subsiding of causeless māna; nirhetuko mānaḥ svayam eva śāmyet — causeless māna subsides on its own; na tatra cikīrṣā — no effort is needed there; iti arthaḥ — such is the meaning
Now, following the needle-and-cauldron maxim — finish the small, easy task before the big one — Viśvanātha takes up the easy case first: how causeless māna subsides. Such māna simply dies down on its own. Nobody needs to do anything to end it. That is the meaning.
sūcī-kaṭāha-nyāya, 'the maxim of the needle and the cauldron': a smith with both a needle and a cauldron to forge makes the quick needle first. So when two topics wait, the ācārya settles the simpler one — causeless māna, which ends by itself — before the harder case of māna that has a cause.

nanu tarhi tasya avadhiḥ tu jijñāsanīyaḥ eva[objection:] 'but then one really does want to know its limit — the point where it stops' nanu raises the doubt; tu = 'but'; jijñāsanīya = 'to be inquired into'; eva = 'surely'(शंका) तो फिर उसकी अवधि तो अवश्य ही जानने योग्य है — 'ननु' शंका उठाता है; 'तु' अर्थात् परन्तु; जिज्ञासनीय अर्थात् जानने योग्य; 'एव' अर्थात् निश्चय ही
iti ata āhaanticipating this, he saysयह शंका होने पर इसलिए कहते हैं
svayaṁ grāho nāyakasya upetya āliṅgana-cumbanādiḥsvayaṁ-grāha = the hero's coming up to her and embracing, kissing, and the like reading nāyakasya (paralleling nāyikāyāḥ below); upetya = 'having approached'; nāyaka = the hero, Kṛṣṇaस्वयं-ग्रह अर्थात् नायक (कृष्ण) का पास जाकर आलिंगन-चुम्बन आदि करना — नायक का, षष्ठी; 'उपेत्य' अर्थात् निकट आकर
nāyikāyāḥ ca smitaṁand the heroine's smile nāyikā = the heroine, Rādhāऔर नायिका (राधा) का स्मित
smitopalakṣitāśru-pātādikaṁa smile that also flags the tears breaking out and the rest upalakṣita = the smile serves as the marker-sign for the falling of tears etc.
ca avadhiḥ sīmā yasya saḥ— these being the avadhi, that is, the sīmā (boundary), of which [māna] it is bahuvrīhi; avadhi glossed as sīmā, 'limit'और यह सब जिसकी अवधि अर्थात् सीमा हो, वह (मान) — बहुव्रीहि; अवधि यहाँ सीमा
nanu tarhi tasya avadhiḥ tu jijñāsanīyaḥ eva — but then one wants to know its limit; iti ata āha — so he says; svayaṁ grāhaḥ nāyakasya upetya āliṅgana-cumbanādiḥ — svayaṁ-grāha is the hero's coming and embracing, kissing, etc.; nāyikāyāḥ ca smitaṁ — and the heroine's smile; smitopalakṣitāśru-pātādikaṁ — the smile marking her tears and the rest; ca avadhiḥ sīmā yasya saḥ — of which [māna] these are the limit
One may object: fine, but then we do want to know where this māna stops — its limit. Anticipating that, Viśvanātha spells it out. svayaṁ-grāha is the nāyaka's own move: he comes up to her and embraces her, kisses her, and so on. The smita is the nāyikā's smile — and a smile that also signals her tears breaking through, and the rest. These two, his embrace and her smiling tears, are the avadhi, the sīmā or boundary, at which the māna gives out. So Viśvanātha assigns the embrace to Kṛṣṇa and the smile to Rādhā.
