An udāharaṇa, introduced by the lead-in 'yathā vā.' Per Viśvanātha it illustrates a māna arising from no real cause at all — sheer mutual contrariness — shown together with how it dissolves, here through Kṛṣṇa and Rādhā's playful teasing. Kṛṣṇa is the speaker, pouring the scene out to Viśākhā, so the 'sakhi' addressed in L2 is Viśākhā.

āha—yathā vā itihe says, [the verse beginning] 'yathā vā''यथा वा' कहकर कहते हैं
yaugapadye kāraṇābhāsa-bhavasya mānasya asambhavāt — since a māna sparked by even a semblance of cause cannot flare up in both at once; punar api kāraṇābhāva-bhavam eva mānaṁ sopaśamaṁ darśayitum — to show, once more, a māna born of the sheer absence of cause, with its pacification; āha — he speaks, 'yathā vā.'
A māna set off by even a semblance of a cause cannot flare up in both partners at the very same instant. So, Viśvanātha explains, Rūpa now shows a different kind — a māna with no cause behind it at all — and shows it together with how it settles down. That is why the verse opens 'yathā vā.'
kāraṇābhāsa vs kāraṇābhāva: a kāraṇābhāsa is something that looks like a provocation but really is not one (a false alarm); a kāraṇābhāva is no provocation whatever — just contrariness. Viśvanātha reads this verse as the second kind.

mudhā vṛthā eva — mudhā means purely in vain; namely the māna-nirbandha born of the thought 'prathamaṁ mayā māna-tyāgo na kartavyaḥ' — 'I must not be the first to give up the māna'; tasmāt atha ānantaraṁ — then, right after that; mayā nistalaṁ dāḍimī-phalam abhi lakṣīkṛtya haste nyaste sati — once I aimed the round pomegranate and set it in her hand; udbhidura-smitāṁ tām — [I embraced] her whose smile broke out on its own.

Viśvanātha unpacks 'mudhā.' Rādhā's thought was, 'I mustn't be the first to give up the māna' — so her holding-out was mudhā, purely pointless. Right after that standoff I took the round pomegranate — 'abhi-' marks that I held it out pointedly toward her — and set it in her hand. And 'udbhidura-smitā' describes Rādhā: her smile broke out entirely on its own, unbidden.

Why cited: Cited to show a māna with no real cause: both lovers hold out from sheer contrariness, each secretly watching the other, until one breaks with a pretextual smile and the other with tears — exactly the causeless standoff-and-collapse the verse illustrates.
