Cast me a glance — one with the smile tucked out of sight. Not even the smallest fault is mine.
An udāharaṇa spoken in the voice of a Vraja gopī, illustrating a māna (sulk) that arises not from a real cause but from a mere semblance of one (kāraṇābhāsa). Viśvanātha explains below that a cause-born sulk is impossible for Kṛṣṇa, so Rūpa illustrates only the semblance-born kind.

kāraṇa-bhāva-bhavaḥ mānaḥa sulk (māna) that arises from a real cause actually being presentसच्चे कारण के भाव से उत्पन्न मान

avyakta itinamely, the verse 'avyakta...'‘अव्यक्त’ इत्यादि पद्य से
kāraṇa-bhāva-bhavaḥ mānaḥ asya na sambhavati — a cause-born sulk is impossible for Kṛṣṇa; iti tam ullaṅghya — so, passing over that; kāraṇābhāsa-bhavam āha — he states the semblance-of-cause kind; avyakta iti — the verse 'avyakta'
A māna born of a genuine cause cannot arise in Kṛṣṇa — nothing the gopī does is a real offense against him. So Rūpa passes over that kind and gives one born of a mere semblance of a cause: the verse 'avyakta.'
The distinction is kāraṇa vs kāraṇābhāsa. A kāraṇa is a real ground for the sulk — as if she had actually spent the night with a rival. A kāraṇābhāsa is only the look of one — she is innocently late, and the lateness merely resembles grounds for suspicion. Kṛṣṇa's sulk here rests on the semblance, never on a fact.

Viśvanātha sets the scene: a certain beautiful Vraja woman sends her girlfriend ahead to post Kṛṣṇa at the rendezvous. As a watch of the night is ending she comes to him, finds him sulking, and pleads that she has done nothing wrong. 'Cast me a glance,' she says — meaning one in which the smile stays hidden; that is what avyakta-smita-dṛṣṭi unpacks to.

vraja-pati is Nanda, the lord of Vraja; vraja-pati-nandana, 'the son of Vraja's lord,' is Kṛṣṇa. Clipped in her fluster to just 'vraja-pate,' the address literally hails Nanda — the slip of the tongue itself betrays how flustered she is.

Why cited: A lexical proof that kālikā, besides 'blackness/dark,' also denotes a mass of clouds — securing the reading 'a sudden cloud blocked the moon,' not merely 'a sudden darkness.'
