The two sources named here — akāraṇa (no cause) and kāraṇābhāsa (a mere semblance of cause) — are what both commentators pick up: Viśvanātha reads them straight, Jīva asks which of the two is truly 'causeless' (see his s5).

Jīva: the first māna, called īrṣyā-māna (sulking born of jealousy), is a transformation of praṇaya. When praṇaya joins with jealousy, it comes to stand in a form that looks like jealousy — the way a clear crystal, set beside a red flower, takes on the flower's redness. In the mapping the crystal is praṇaya, the red object is the jealousy, and the borrowed redness is the māna; the crystal never really becomes red, so praṇaya never really becomes something other than itself.
This is a technical distinction about kinds of change, completed in s2. Apparent/borrowed change: a crystal by a red flower looks red but stays clear glass (revert the flower and the redness is gone). Real/substantial change: milk becoming curd — a new thing that cannot go back. Jīva's point: māna is the first kind, an adopted appearance, not a new nature.

sarpa-ādīnāṁ maṇḍala-ādi-bhaṅgi-viśeṣa-vat ca — and like snakes taking a special posture such as a coil; na tu dugdhasya dadhitva-vat — but not like milk becoming curd; punaḥ svarūpa-prāpti-abhāvāt — because no fresh essential nature is ever reached here.
And it is like a snake taking a coiled posture — the snake stays a snake, only its shape changes. It is NOT like milk turning into curd, because in māna no new essential nature is ever acquired. The snake and the reddened crystal keep what they are; milk-into-curd would mean becoming a genuinely different substance, and that is exactly what does not happen to praṇaya.

dvitīyam [māna] — the second māna; mālāyāḥ prapāya-cchavi-viśeṣa-ākāraṁ sa-pratva-pratyāyaka-ākāra-viśeṣa-vattvam — is a special radiant configuration, like a necklace's distinctive form that displays its own particular character; iti jñeyam — so it should be understood.
Jīva glosses the second: it is praṇaya wearing a special radiant configuration of its own — like the distinctive shape of a necklace that shows off its own particular beauty. This matches the mūla's 'splendor of playful love' rather than any jealousy-driven change.
The Sanskrit of this segment is textually uncertain (prapāya-cchavi..., sa-pratva-pratyāyaka...) and the transmitted reading is difficult; the gloss follows the parseable elements — mālāyāḥ (of a necklace), ākāra-viśeṣa (a special form), pratyāyaka (revealing) — and the drift of the mūla (vilāsa-bhara-vaibhavam), without forcing the corrupt words into a fixed sense.
