An udāharaṇa illustrating darśana, introduced by the lead-in 'atha darśanam, yathā—': the heroine learns of the rival not by inference but by seeing the two together with her own eyes. It stands over against anumiti, the threefold inference from indirect marks (bhogāṅka / gotra-skhalana / svapna of 15.88) — here the proof is direct sight. Padmā, friend of the abandoned heroine, throws the whole scene in Kṛṣṇa's face as he tries to coax the offended one round.

tataś ca kṣaṇa-antare — a moment later; dūrāt utthitena rasanāyāḥ śabdena — by a girdle-sound risen from afar; 'hanta ko'yaṁ rasanā-śabdaḥ, na tu asmat-sakhīnāṁ kāsām api' iti labdha-śaṅkayā — with the suspicion 'whose girdle is that? none of ours,' [she] sātaṅkā, alarmed
'Alarmed' (sātaṅkā) means this: a moment later a girdle-sound rose in the distance, and the doubt took hold — 'Wait, whose girdle is that? It's none of our girls'.' So suspicion seized her.
The sting of the scene: Kṛṣṇa slipped away pleading a sound heard 'from afar'; it is a real sound from afar — a rival's girdle — that then betrays him.
