So pūrva-rāga — the love that catches fire before the lovers have ever met — is to be understood in this same stage-by-stage way even in Kṛṣṇa himself, and not only in ordinary lovers.

He stopped short. Kṛṣṇa, who used to lose himself in the rush of joy welling up from the fragrant sweetness of his own flute-playing, broke away from it.
The udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, 15.72cd–73, 'upāraṁsīt…') for pūrva-rāga arising even in Kṛṣṇa (harer api, 15.72). Per Viśvanātha it is Vṛndā, speaking to Rādhā, describing how Kṛṣṇa — smitten before their meeting — drops one by one the very delights that had defined him.

So Jīva grounds it: here the standing emotion (sthāyibhāva) that the whole mood rests on is nothing but devotion to Śrī Kṛṣṇa itself — that is the emotion natively at work, which is why pūrva-rāga can be spoken of even in Kṛṣṇa.
Reflects Jīva's settled position that kṛṣṇa-rati / bhakti to Kṛṣṇa is itself the sthāyibhāva grounding the rasa, rather than any mundane emotion.

Notice the figure, says Viśvanātha. The single word 'parimala' (fragrance) casts the flute's sweet notes as a flower-garden — for fragrance belongs to flowers, so by that one word the music is turned into a blossoming grove.
