An udāharaṇa of pūrva-rāga — love kindled before the two ever meet — here arising gītāt, “from song” (the unit’s lead-in). In the king’s court the heroine overhears a sage singing an unnamed one’s glories and is smitten on the spot. At s4 Viśvanātha marks the sthāyī as sneha and the rasa as pūrva-rāga.

kam udaśruḥ sakhi vaiṇiko muniḥ ||
kamof whom? acc. — the interrogative object of upavīṇayati; the whole verse turns on this unanswered “whom”किसको / किसके विषय में (अनुत्तरित प्रश्न, जिस पर पूरा पद टिका है)
udaśruḥhimself in tears nom. — epithet of muni; the singer weeps as he singsस्वयं आँसू बहाता हुआ (वह मुनि)
sakhiO friendहे सखी
vaiṇikothe vīṇā-player nom. — one skilled with the vīṇāवीणावादक
muniḥthe sage nom. — the subject who singsमुनि (जो गा रहा है)
sakhi — O friend; vaiṇikaḥ muniḥ — the vīṇā-playing sage; udaśruḥ — himself in tears; kam — of whom [does he sing]?
Of whom, O friend, is this vīṇā-playing sage singing — he who is himself in tears?
The verse never names the one sung about — “kam,” “of whom?” The heroine does not yet know him; that unanswered question is the whole point of pūrva-rāga, love before meeting.

atra snehaḥ sthāyī pūrva-rāgo rasaḥ ||
atrahere [in this verse]यहाँ (इस उदाहरण में)
snehaḥ sthāyīsneha (deepened love) is the abiding emotion (sthāyī-bhāva)स्नेह स्थायीभाव है
pūrva-rāgo rasaḥand pūrva-rāga (love before meeting) is the rasaपूर्वराग रस है
atra — here; snehaḥ sthāyī — sneha is the sthāyī-bhāva; pūrva-rāgaḥ rasaḥ — pūrva-rāga is the rasa.
Viśvanātha names the parts: the abiding emotion here is sneha, love intensified past mere rati; and the rasa it ripens into is pūrva-rāga, the longing that arises before the lovers have ever met.
sthāyī-bhāva — the standing emotion that a rasa is built on. Sneha is rati (love) thickened to the point where the heart melts; when it burns before any meeting, as here, the resulting rasa is called pūrva-rāga.
