sahacari — O companion (Padmā); svapne — in a dream; dṛṣṭvā — having seen; sarit — a river; kāsarī-śyāma-nīrā — dark-watered like a she-buffalo.
svapne — स्वप्न में; dṛṣṭvā — देखकर; sahacari — हे सखी; sarit-kāsarī — नदी रूपी भैंस; śyāma-nīrā — श्याम जलवाली।
Candrāvalī begins telling Padmā a dream. 'I saw, in a dream, O friend, a river whose water was dark.' The darkness she likens to a buffalo-cow (kāsarī) — the homely image a cowherd girl reaches for. The sentence runs on across the next three lines.
हे सखी! मैंने स्वप्न में एक नदी देखी। वह श्याम जलवाली थी, मानो कोई भैंस हो।
An udāharaṇa of svapna-darśana — seeing Kṛṣṇa in a dream, the third mode of darśana ('directly, in a picture, and in a dream') defined at 15.6-7. Candrāvalī tells the dream to her friend Padmā (so Viśvanātha), so 'sahacari' addresses Padmā.

On the bank of that river stood a bower-house woven of mādhavī creepers, loud with the hum of bees. The dream is filling in its setting before the figure appears.
उस नदी के तट पर माधवी लता का एक कुंज-गृह था। उसमें भौंरे गुंजार कर रहे थे।

Inside that bower was a mass of darkness — but embodied, taken bodily form, and lovely, with tawny-yellow loins. This dark, yellow-loined figure is Kṛṣṇa himself: dark-bodied and wrapped in yellow. Viśvanātha spells the hint out in a moment.

arautsīthemmed [me] in, blocked [my way] aorist of rudh, 'to obstruct'रोक लिया, अवरुद्ध कर दिया (रुध् धातु)
citram — wonder of wonders!; sa — that mass of darkness; candrāvalim api mām — even me, Candrāvalī; pātum icchan — wishing to drink up; arautsīt — hemmed me in.
citraṁ — आश्चर्य है; sa — उस अन्धकार-पुंज ने; candrāvalim api pātum icchan — चन्द्रावली को (चन्द्र-पंक्ति को) भी पीने की इच्छा करता हुआ; māṁ arautsīt — मुझे रोक लिया।
And then the marvel: that mass of darkness wished to drink me up — even me, Candrāvalī — and hemmed me in. Her own name carries a pun: candra-āvali also means 'a row of moons.' So the dream-darkness, which even a single moonbeam should dispel, instead longs to swallow a whole row of moons. The two senses — the girl and the moons — ride together in the one word.
आश्चर्य है! उस अन्धकार-पुंज ने चन्द्रावली को भी — अर्थात् चन्द्रों की पंक्ति को भी — पी जाने की इच्छा से मुझे रोक लिया।
śleṣa on candrāvalim: (1) Candrāvalī, the speaker's own name; (2) candra-āvali, 'a row of moons.' The marvel is darkness 'drinking' the moons — devouring the very moonlight that ought to destroy it — folded into its 'drinking' the girl herself.

candrāvalī padmām āha — Candrāvalī speaks to Padmā; kāsarī iti — the word 'kāsarī'; mahiṣī — [means] a she-buffalo; gopa-jātitvena bālyena ca — because of her cowherd birth and her childlikeness.
candrāvalī padmām āha — चन्द्रावली पद्मा से कहती है; kāsarī mahiṣī iti — 'कासरी' अर्थात् भैंस; gopa-jātitvena bālyena ca — गोप-जाति होने और बाल्यावस्था के कारण।
Viśvanātha sets the scene: Candrāvalī is speaking to Padmā, so 'O companion' is Padmā. The word 'kāsarī' means a she-buffalo. Why does she picture the dark water as a buffalo? Because she is a cowherd girl, and childlike — that is the image such a girl naturally reaches for.
चन्द्रावली अपनी सखी पद्मा से कह रही है। यहाँ 'कासरी' का अर्थ भैंस है। गोप-जाति की होने के कारण, और बालिका होने के कारण, उसके मन में यही उपमा सहज ही आती है।

śyāma-varṇopamāneṣu — श्याम वर्ण के उपमानों में; kāsaryāḥ eva — भैंस की ही; jhaṭiti — झट से; upasthitiḥ — उपस्थिति।
He presses the point. Of all the things a dark color could be compared to, for such a girl it is the buffalo alone that springs to mind at once. So the poet fittingly puts that very image in her mouth.
श्याम वर्ण के जितने उपमान हैं, उनमें (गोप-कन्या को) झट से भैंस का ही स्मरण हो आता है, और किसी का नहीं।

kapiśaṁ pīta-varṇaṁ jaghanaṁ yasyeti pītāmbaraṁ lakṣitam |
kapiśaṁ pīta-varṇaṁ'kapiśa' means yellow-colored'कपिश' अर्थात् पीतवर्ण
jaghanaṁ yasya iti'[he] whose loins are [that color]' — unpacking the compound bahuvrīhi resolution of kapiśa-jaghanaजिसका जघन (ऐसा हो) — यह बहुव्रीहि समास
pītāmbaraṁ lakṣitamthe yellow garment (pītāmbara) is what is pointed toपीताम्बर का बोध कराया गया है
kapiśam — 'kapiśa'; pīta-varṇam — [means] yellow; jaghanaṁ yasya iti — 'whose loins are yellow'; pītāmbaram lakṣitam — the yellow garment is indicated.
kapiśaṁ pīta-varṇaṁ — कपिश अर्थात् पीत; jaghanaṁ yasya iti — जिसका जघन, यह बहुव्रीहि; pītāmbaraṁ lakṣitam — पीताम्बर लक्षित है।
Now the yellow loins. 'kapiśa' means yellow, so 'kapiśa-jaghana' means 'whose loins are yellow.' But loins are not literally yellow — the phrase points past itself to Kṛṣṇa's yellow garment, the pītāmbara wrapped at his hips. That settles the identity: the dark form is dark-bodied Kṛṣṇa in his yellow cloth.
'कपिश' का अर्थ पीतवर्ण है। 'जिसका जघन पीत है' — यह बहुव्रीहि समास है। इससे पीताम्बर का बोध कराया गया है।
lakṣitam works by lakṣaṇā — a word's power to point beyond its literal sense to something bound up with it. 'Yellow loins' taken straight is odd; read by lakṣaṇā it indicates the yellow garment covering them.
'लक्षितम्' यहाँ लक्षणा-वृत्ति से काम करता है — शब्द की वह शक्ति जो अपने मुख्य अर्थ से आगे बढ़कर उससे सम्बद्ध किसी वस्तु की ओर संकेत करती है। 'पीत जघन' को सीधे लेने पर बात विचित्र जान पड़ती है; लक्षणा से पढ़ने पर वह उस जघन को ढकनेवाले पीताम्बर का संकेत करता है।

pātum iti — the word 'pātum'; pā pāne — [is from] the root 'pā' used in the sense of drinking.
pātum iti — 'पातुम्' पद; pā pāne — 'पा' धातु पान-अर्थ में।
A quick root-note: 'pātum' is from the verb-root 'pā,' in the sense 'to drink.' He fixes this because a second root 'pā' means 'to protect' — here it is not 'protect' but 'drink': the darkness wants to drink the moons down.
'पातुम्' पद में 'पा' धातु पान अर्थात् पीने के अर्थ में है।
Two roots share the form pā — pā 'to drink' and pā 'to protect.' Viśvanātha specifies 'pā pāne' (the drinking one), which the verse's marvel — darkness swallowing moonlight — requires.
'पा' रूप की दो धातुएँ हैं — एक 'पा' पीने के अर्थ में और दूसरी 'पा' रक्षा करने के अर्थ में। विश्वनाथ 'पा पाने' कहकर पीनेवाली धातु का ही निर्देश करते हैं, क्योंकि इसी अर्थ से पद्य का आश्चर्य — अन्धकार का चाँदनी को पी जाना — सिद्ध होता है।
