L1definition
na vinā vipralambhena sambhogaḥ puṣṭim aśnute |
na vinā vipralambhenanot without vipralambha (separation) vinā governs the instrumental vipralambhena; na negates the whole clauseविप्रलम्भ (विरह) के बिना नहीं
sambhogaḥunion (sambhoga), the joy of being together — the subjectसम्भोग (मिलन)
puṣṭimits nourishment, its coming to full strengthपुष्टि को
aśnutedoes [not] reach, does [not] attainप्राप्त करता है
sambhogaḥ — union; vipralambhena vinā — without separation; puṣṭim — nourishment; na aśnute — does not attain.
The chapter has just turned to vipralambha (separation), the first of śṛṅgāra's two divisions. This verse states the thesis: union (sambhoga) never comes to its full strength without separation first. Take the separation away and the union stays thin.
L2other
kāṣāyite hi vastrādau bhūyān evābhivardhate
kāṣāyiteonce it has been dyed with kāṣāya (a reddish-brown dye) loc. absolute — 'when the thing has been dyed'जब रँगा जाता है / रँगे जाने पर
hifor — it gives the reason through an everyday parallelक्योंकि
vastra-ādauin a cloth and the like loc., the thing dyed; ādi = 'and such things'वस्त्र आदि में
bhūyān evagreater by far, all the moreऔर अधिक ही
abhivardhateit grows, it deepensबढ़ जाता है
hi — for; vastra-ādau — in a cloth and the like; kāṣāyite — once it has been dyed; bhūyān eva — all the more; abhivardhate — it deepens.
The second line backs the thesis with a homely parallel. When a cloth is steeped in kāṣāya dye, the colour does not wash out thin — it comes up far deeper. So too union, steeped first in separation, deepens all the more. The dye is the separation; the cloth taking on a richer colour is the union grown full.
The line works as an arthāntaranyāsa — a figure that props a specific claim (union needs separation) with a general, everyday truth (dye deepens on cloth). The verse asserts the doctrine in L1 and corroborates it by parallel in L2.

Jīva opens by naming what the phrase 'tathā coktam' is doing. To back the claim that union needs separation, Rūpa does not merely assert it — he brings a proof that carries its own reasoning inside it. That is why the verse is introduced with 'and thus it is said'.

And who confirms it? Kṛṣṇa himself. On the very point that he holds himself back in order to swell the devotees' love, Kṛṣṇa settled the matter in his own words — which Jīva now quotes.

Kṛṣṇa to the gopīs: 'I do not repay even those who worship me — and I hold back on purpose, to make their love for me grow. It is like a poor man who wins a fortune and then loses it: he broods on it, utterly absorbed, and notices nothing else.' The withheld reciprocation is the deliberate separation that deepens love.
Why cited: Kṛṣṇa's own admission that he withholds his response on purpose, precisely to intensify the devotees' love — scriptural proof that separation (vipralambha) is what nourishes union.

Jīva now walks through the verse. Supply an opening 'O friends, listen'. 'I do not requite even ordinary creatures who worship me — how much less beloveds like you'; that is, 'I keep holding back, breaking off bit by bit.' Then he raises the natural question: to what end do you withhold? Answer: to build up their anuvṛtti — their devoted following, which is love made of thinking on me and nothing else. That flow of love is Kṛṣṇa's own livelihood, and he withholds himself precisely to make it grow. His closing sense: this heightened love is hard to bring about, yet his very craving for it makes it impossible to give up.
The dative 'anuvṛtti-vṛttaye' is licensed by the rule 'kriyārthopapadasya ca karmaṇi sthāninaḥ' (Pāṇini 2.3.14): where a purpose-noun stands in place of a purpose-infinitive, its object takes the fourth (dative) case. So the phrase reads 'for [the sake of] nourishing their devotion'.

An objection: toward something supremely precious love swells on its own — so why must Kṛṣṇa withhold himself at all? Jīva grants it ('true'). But even so, when he does not requite them the increase is greater still — greater both in their devotion and in his own answering flow of love. To show how, he now brings an example, opening with 'yathā', 'just as'.

The example unpacked: a poor man gains wealth that is his very livelihood, then loses it — it vanishes completely. Just brooding on it, even the bare hope of getting it back, fills his whole mind — how much more the actual recovery. He is absorbed, satisfied, and turns to nothing else. It is the losing and the regaining that make the wealth fill him so.

mama ca parama-dhane bhavādṛśiand I, toward you who are my supreme wealth ca pairs the two directions; loc. bhavādṛśi = 'in the case of you'और मेरे लिए परम धन रूप तुम जैसों में
parasparaṁ tādṛśatvaṁ syātthere would arise, on both sides, that same absorbed conditionपरस्पर वैसी ही (उस निर्धन जैसी) स्थिति हो जाए
ity arthaḥthis is the meaningयह अर्थ है
tathā — just so; bhavādṛśaḥ parama-dhane mayi — you toward me, your supreme wealth; mama ca parama-dhane bhavādṛśi — and I toward you, my supreme wealth; parasparaṁ tādṛśatvaṁ syāt — there would be that same state mutually; ity arthaḥ — this is the sense.
Now the mapping. The poor man stands for both sides at once. Kṛṣṇa is the gopīs' supreme wealth, and the gopīs are Kṛṣṇa's supreme wealth; losing and regaining that wealth is the separation and the reunion. So the same total absorption the poor man feels arises in both of them, each toward the other — and that heightened, mutual love is exactly what the separation produces. That, Jīva concludes, is the verse's point.

Now the full reply. Separation is not merely an aid to union — it is far more. For two lovers filled with rati, prema, sneha and the rest, separation works through their mutual remembering, through sudden inner flashes and vivid appearances of each other. To the embraces, kisses and unions they taste that way — in the mind, before the eyes, in the body — it hands over wonder without limit. So far from being the lesser thing, separation is itself a dense heap of union. It does not merely feed the rasa; it is packed with it.

yad uktam — as was said; anubhaviṣṇubhiḥ — by the connoisseurs who taste it firsthand.
To seal the point Viśvanātha appeals to the connoisseurs — the anubhaviṣṇus, those able to relish this separation-mood directly — and quotes what they have said.
anubhaviṣṇu: from anu-√bhū, 'to experience'; the -iṣṇu suffix marks a settled bent, so 'one given to experiencing' — a seasoned relisher of the mood, not a mere theorist.

The quoted relishers say: forced to choose, take her separation over her union. In union she alone is present; in separation the whole three worlds are steeped in her — the lover sees her everywhere. One might object that when those vivid appearances break off, the pain of separation is unbearable and leaves the lover helpless. Not so, Viśvanātha adds: that pain is not material at all — it is a special working of Kṛṣṇa's hlādinī (bliss) and saṁvit (knowing) potencies, so even this pain is nothing but a form of the very root of bliss — a point already explained under the verse 'pūrṇānande'py uṣitvā…'.
Why cited: Adduced from the seasoned relishers to prove that separation is not merely union's helper but is actually the richer state — in viraha the beloved pervades the whole universe — and that its very pain, being a working of the hlādinī and saṁvit potencies, is itself a form of bliss, not a defect.
