Jīva opens with a pointer: these ten Bhramara-gīta verses beginning 'madhupa kitava' are meant to be relished in his own Śrī-Vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī (his Bhāgavata commentary), where he has treated them fully.
'मधुप कितव' से आरम्भ होने वाले ये दस श्लोक श्रीवैष्णवतोषणी में ही आस्वादन करने योग्य हैं।
The Bhramara-gīta is Bhāgavata 10.47; Jīva defers the full relish to his commentary there and keeps his UN note minimal.
यह भ्रमर-गीत भागवत १०.४७ है; जीव इनके पूर्ण रसास्वादन को अपनी वहीं की टीका पर छोड़ देते हैं और उज्ज्वल-नीलमणि पर अपनी टिप्पणी संक्षिप्त ही रखते हैं।

Jīva's mapping: calling the bee 'friend of the cheat' shows asūyā, fault-finding spite (aimed at Kṛṣṇa through his crony).
यहाँ 'कितव-बन्धो' (धूर्त के मित्र) इस सम्बोधन से असूया प्रकट होती है।

The 'rival's crushed-garland kuṅkuma' phrase shows akauśala — Kṛṣṇa's clumsy misconduct, caught red-handed. (Note: Jīva assigns this phrase to akauśala; Viśvanātha below assigns the same phrase to īrṣyā — the two mappings differ, and are not to be merged.)
'सपत्न्याः' इत्यादि पद से अकुशलता प्रकट होती है।

Jīva leaves this last clause compressed ('and by vahatu etc.'), not spelling out which term it carries; Viśvanātha below reads vahatu = avadhīraṇa and yadu-sadasi = akauśalodgāra.
जीव इस अन्तिम अंश को संक्षिप्त ही छोड़ देते हैं ('और वहतु इत्यादि से'), यह नहीं खोलते कि यह किस अवयव को वहन करता है; आगे विश्वनाथ 'वहतु' को अवधीरण और 'यदु-सदसि' को अकौशल-उद्गार पढ़ते हैं।

Viśvanātha sets the scene. Uddhava has come from Mathurā with Kṛṣṇa's message, approached Rādhā, bowed, and sat. She looks at him and refuses to look. Then a bee comes hovering at her feet, drawn by their fragrance. In her divine madness (divyonmāda) she takes the bee for the real envoy — 'Kṛṣṇa sent this to win me back; look, it is bowing at my feet' — and, haughty, she disregards it and begins to speak. That speech is prajalpa.
divyonmāda ('divine madness') is the mahābhāva condition in which Rādhā, overwhelmed, addresses the bee as Kṛṣṇa's messenger and even as Kṛṣṇa himself; it frames the whole verse as spoken to a bee, not to Uddhava.
दिव्योन्माद (दिव्य उन्माद) महाभाव की वह दशा है जिसमें भाव-विह्वल राधा भौंरे को कृष्ण का दूत, यहाँ तक कि स्वयं कृष्ण मानकर सम्बोधित करती हैं; यही पूरे श्लोक को भौंरे से कहा गया (उद्धव से नहीं) सिद्ध करता है।

Viśvanātha glosses 'kitava-bandho'. The 'cheat' is Kṛṣṇa, who deceives with a pile of false promises — she cites his own words: 'for my sake he abandoned world and Veda' (BhP 10.32.21), 'I cannot repay you' (10.32.22), 'I will come,' sent through envoys (10.39.35). The bee is his 'friend' only in that it runs his errands disguised as friendship. So: don't touch my foot.
हे मधुप! हे भौंरे! 'एवं मदर्थोज्झित-लोक-वेद' (भा.पु. १०.३२.२१), 'न पारयेऽहम्' (१०.३२.२२), 'आयास्य इति दौत्यकैः' (१०.३९.३५) — इन झूठे वचनों के समूह से (गोपियों को) ठगने वाले धूर्त कृष्ण के हे बन्धु! हे मित्रता के बहाने दूतकर्म करने वाले! मेरा चरण मत छू।
Why cited: Kṛṣṇa's own gopī-addressed promises (BhP 10.32.21–22, 10.39.35) are adduced as the 'heap of false words' that makes him the kitava, the cheat, whose friend the bee is.
क्यों उद्धृत: कृष्ण के अपने, गोपियों से किए वचन (भा.पु. १०.३२.२१-२२, १०.३९.३५) यहाँ उन 'झूठे वचनों के ढेर' के रूप में उद्धृत हैं, जो उसे कितव (धूर्त) सिद्ध करते हैं — जिसका मित्र यह भौंरा है।

iti tatra āhato that she saysइस पर वे कहती हैं
he madhupa madyapa !O madhupa = O wine-drinker! śleṣa: madhu-pa is now read as madya-pa, 'wine-drinker'हे मधुप = मद्यप (मदिरा पीने वाले)!
madhu madye puṣpa-rase iti anekārtha-vargātsince in the dictionary of many meanings 'madhu' means both wine and flower-nectar ablative of ground — the pun is licensed by the word's range'मधु' शब्द मदिरा और पुष्प-रस दोनों अर्थ में — अनेकार्थ-वर्ग के अनुसार (होने के कारण)
madyapa-sparśe caraṇasya apāvitryaṁ syātat a wine-drinker's touch the foot would become impure locative absolute — 'were a wine-drinker to touch it…'मद्यप के स्पर्श से (मेरा) चरण अपवित्र हो जाएगा
nanu kim iti namaskartuṁ na dadāsi — why not even let it make its bow?; iti tatra āha — she answers; madhu madye puṣpa-rase iti anekārtha-vargāt he madhupa madyapa — since 'madhu' means both wine and nectar, 'O wine-drinker!'; madyapa-sparśe caraṇasya apāvitryaṁ syāt — a wine-drinker's touch would defile the foot.
Objection: then why not at least let it bow at your feet? She answers by twisting the vocative. Since 'madhu' means both flower-nectar and wine, 'madhupa' can be read 'wine-drinker' — so: 'O drunkard! If a wine-drinker touches my foot, the foot is defiled.' She foregrounds the śleṣa to keep the bee off.
(भौंरा/कृष्ण कहता है —) 'तो फिर नमस्कार करने क्यों नहीं देतीं?' इस पर वे कहती हैं — हे मधुप, अर्थात् मद्यप (मदिरा पीने वाले)! 'मधु' शब्द अनेकार्थ-वर्ग में मदिरा और पुष्प-रस — दोनों अर्थ रखता है; अतः मद्यप के स्पर्श से मेरा चरण अपवित्र हो जाएगा।
This is the pivot to the second, punning reading of madhupa: madhu-pa 'honey/nectar-drinker' → madya-pa 'wine-drinker'. The whole rebuke now runs on the drunkard sense.
यहीं 'मधुप' का दूसरा, श्लेष-मूलक अर्थ खुलता है : मधु-प 'मधु/रस पीने वाला' → मद्य-प 'मदिरा पीने वाला'। अब सारी झिड़की शराबी वाले अर्थ पर चलती है।

Objection from the bee: I've done nothing — why slander me as a drunk? She answers: it is no slander, I state a fact. Look at your whiskers: they carry kuṅkuma from the garland crushed against my rival's breasts on Kṛṣṇa's chest — or (a second reading of the compound) from Kṛṣṇa's own forest-garland crushed by her breasts. Viśvanātha notes the mechanics: the bee's whiskers are just naturally yellow-tawny, and she superimposes (āropa) the kuṅkuma-stain onto them.

Now 'Madhu-pati' is read straight: lord of the Madhus, a Yādava clan. Though truly a cowherd by birth — born of Yaśodā, queen of Vraja — luck has promoted him to kṣatriya rank among the Yadus. She says it with a sneer at his risen station.
मधुओं अर्थात् (मधु नामक) यादव-विशेषों का स्वामी अब वह हो गया है; व्रजेश्वरी के गर्भ से जन्मा होने के कारण जन्म से गोप होते हुए भी, भाग्यवश अब क्षत्रिय-जाति का बन बैठा है।
madhu-pati here = 'lord of the Madhu-Yādavas' (Mathurā), distinct from the drunkard reading of madhupa earlier; the sneer is that his 'gopa' origin has been swapped for kṣatriya status.

Or else — a second reading, left open beside the first: take 'in the Yadu assembly' as the plain place where the disgrace unfolds. Because the tale spreads (through the cowherd) and because the women are devoted to him, the Yadus as a whole will be censured in every land. Viśvanātha lets this reading stand alongside the previous one without choosing between them.
अथवा — 'यदु-सदसि' को केवल स्थान-अधिकरण मानें, तो वहाँ (मथुरा में) ही विडम्बना होने वाली है; गोप (कृष्ण) में उन यदु-कुल की नारियों की आसक्ति के कारण यदुओं की निन्दा ही सारे देश में होगी — ऐसा अर्थ है।

śleṣeṇa yasya dūtas tvam īdṛk, sa ca madhupatir madhūnāṁ madyānāṁ patir iti madyapa eva |
śleṣeṇa yasya dūtaḥ tvam īdṛkby the pun (śleṣa): 'whose envoy you are, such as this' now the punning layer of the same line is drawn outश्लेष से — 'जिसका दूत तू ऐसा है' (उसी पंक्ति की श्लेष-परत)
saḥ ca madhupatiḥ madhūnāṁ madyānāṁ patiḥ itiand this 'madhu-pati' is lord of the madhus = of the wines śleṣa: madhu = wine, so madhu-pati = lord of winesवह मधुपति अर्थात् मधुओं = मदिराओं का स्वामी
madyapaḥ evathat is, a drunkard indeed eva — the punning sense lands squarely on 'drunkard'मद्यप (शराबी) ही है
śleṣeṇa yasya dūtaḥ tvam īdṛk — by pun, 'whose such envoy you are'; saḥ ca madhupatiḥ madhūnāṁ madyānāṁ patiḥ iti madyapaḥ eva — and that Madhu-pati, lord of the wines, is just a drunkard.
śleṣeṇa yasya dūtaḥ tvam īdṛk — श्लेष से 'जिसका दूत तू ऐसा है'; saḥ ca madhupatiḥ madhūnāṁ madyānāṁ patiḥ iti — वह मधुपति = मदिराओं का स्वामी; madyapaḥ eva — मद्यप ही
Now the punning layer of the last line. Read 'madhu-pati' as 'lord of the madhus = wines' — so the master whose envoy you are is himself a drunkard. The verse's headline device: the same words that name 'lord of the Madhu-Yādavas' also say 'lord of wines, a drunkard.'
श्लेष से — 'जिसका दूत तू ऐसा है' — वह मधुपति अर्थात् मधुओं = मदिराओं का स्वामी, अर्थात् मद्यप (शराबी) ही है।
This is the śleṣa pivot on madhu-pati that runs parallel to the madhupa = madya-pa puns earlier: the whole taunt has a sober-surface reading (Yādava lord) and a drunkard reading (lord of wines).
यह मधु-पति पर वही श्लेष-मोड़ है जो पहले 'मधुप' = मद्य-प वाले श्लेषों के समानान्तर चलता है : पूरे तंज का एक शान्त-ऊपरी अर्थ (यादव-स्वामी) और एक शराबी-अर्थ (मदिराओं का स्वामी) है।

tvādṛśaḥ bhramaraḥ dūtaḥ kutaḥ itihow could a bee like you be an envoy [otherwise]? kutaḥ — rhetorical 'from where?', i.e. not at allतुझ-जैसा भौंरा दूत कहाँ से (हो सकता है)? (अर्थात् कदापि नहीं)
yataḥ madyasya vikṣepeṇa eva tvādṛśaḥ bhramaraḥ dūtaḥ kutaḥ iti — for except by spilled wine, whence would a bee like you be a messenger?
yataḥ madyasya vikṣepeṇa eva — क्योंकि मदिरा के छलकने से ही; tvādṛśaḥ bhramaraḥ dūtaḥ kutaḥ iti — तुझ-जैसा भौंरा दूत कहाँ से
Backing the drunkard-pun: a bee like you shows up only where wine has been spilled — that, not any real errand, is what drew you. So even calling you his 'messenger' fits the drunkard reading, not a true embassy.
क्योंकि मदिरा के छलकने (गिरने) से ही तो तू आकर्षित हुआ — अन्यथा तुझ-जैसा भौंरा दूत कहाँ से हो सकता है? (अर्थात् कदापि नहीं)।

atra kitava iti asūyā — here 'kitava' shows asūyā.
atra kitava iti asūyā — यहाँ 'कितव' पद से असूया
Now Viśvanātha maps the verse onto the definition. 'Cheat' (kitava) carries asūyā, spite.
यहाँ 'कितव' (धूर्त) इस पद से असूया प्रकट होती है।

sapatnyā ity-ādinā īrṣyā — 'सपत्न्याः' इत्यादि से ईर्ष्या
The 'rival's crushed-garland' phrase carries īrṣyā, jealousy. (Note: Viśvanātha ties this phrase to īrṣyā; Jīva above tied the same phrase to akauśala — the two mappings diverge and stand as they are.)
'सपत्न्याः' इत्यादि पद से ईर्ष्या प्रकट होती है।

The command 'do not touch my foot' carries mada, pride.
'अङ्घ्रिं मा स्पृश' (चरण मत छू) इस पद से मद प्रकट होता है।

yadu-sadasi ity-ādinā akauśalodgāraḥby 'in the Yadu assembly…' etc., the blurting-out of ineptitude (akauśalodgāra)'यदु-सदसि' इत्यादि से अकुशलता का उद्गार
iti vivecanīyamthus it should be discerned closing formula — the mapping is completeयों विवेचना कर लेनी चाहिए
vahatv ity-ādinā avadhīraṇaṁ — by 'vahatu…', avadhīraṇa; yadu-sadasi ity-ādinā akauśalodgāraḥ — by 'yadu-sadasi…', akauśalodgāra; iti vivecanīyam — so it is to be discerned.
vahatv ity-ādinā avadhīraṇaṁ — 'वहतु' इत्यादि से अवधीरण; yadu-sadasi ity-ādinā akauśalodgāraḥ — 'यदु-सदसि' इत्यादि से अकौशल-उद्गार; iti vivecanīyam — यों विवेचना करनी चाहिए
And the close: 'let Madhu-pati carry off their favor' carries avadhīraṇa, disregard; 'mocked in the Yadu assembly' is the akauśala-udgāra, the blurting of his ineptitude. So all five ingredients of the definition are found in the verse — thus it should be worked out.
'वहतु' इत्यादि से अवधीरण (तिरस्कार) और 'यदु-सदसि' इत्यादि से अकुशलता का उद्गार — यों विवेचना कर लेनी चाहिए।
Viśvanātha's full mapping — kitava=asūyā, sapatnyāḥ=īrṣyā, aṅghriṁ mā spṛśa=mada, vahatu=avadhīraṇa, yadu-sadasi=akauśalodgāra — differs from Jīva's above (who read sapatnyāḥ as akauśala and mā spṛśāṅghrim as īrṣyā+avadhīraṇa+mada). Both are kept distinct.
