L1definition
rūḍhoktebhyo’nubhāvebhyaḥ kām apy āptā viśiṣṭatām |
rūḍhoktebhyo’nubhāvebhyaḥbeyond the anubhāvas already stated under rūḍha — starting from the outward signs described at the previous (rūḍha) stage ablative of the starting-point/comparison: 'going past those anubhāvas'; rūḍha-ukta = 'spoken of under [the] rūḍha [stage]'जिन अनुभावों का वर्णन रूढ (भाव) की दशा में हो चुका, उन अनुभावों से (आगे बढ़कर)
kām apysome indescribable — a distinction there is no naming kām api marks the viśiṣṭatā as beyond words (so Jīva: anirvacanīyām)किसी अनिर्वचनीय (शब्दों में न कही जा सकने वाली)
āptāhaving reached, having taken on nom. fem. participle agreeing with the anubhāvas of L2 — they 'attain' the distinction(वे अनुभाव) प्राप्त कर लेते हैं
viśiṣṭatāma special heightened quality — a mark that sets them apart accusative, object of āptāएक विशिष्टता को (विशेष उत्कर्ष को)
[anubhāvāḥ] rūḍha-uktebhyaḥ anubhāvebhyaḥ — [the anubhāvas] beyond the anubhāvas stated under rūḍha; kām api viśiṣṭatām āptā — having reached some indescribable heightening
Rūpa now defines the next stage of love. Take the outward signs (anubhāvas) already listed at the rūḍha stage; here they climb higher still, taking on some further distinction that cannot even be put into words.
Verse 170 is the lakṣaṇa (definition) of adhirūḍha, the highest reach of mahābhāva, capping the ladder that ran through sneha, māna, praṇaya, rāga, anurāga and rūḍha (bhāva). The illustration follows in verse 171 (L3-L5).
L2definition
yatrānubhāvā dṛśyante so’dhirūḍho nigadyate ||
yatrain which [love] — the case where yatra … saḥ correlative: 'where … that'जहाँ
anubhāvā dṛśyantethe anubhāvas are seen [so heightened] nom. subject + passive verb; picks up the viśiṣṭatā of L1(ऐसे) अनुभाव दिखाई देते हैं
so’dhirūḍhothat [love] is 'adhirūḍha' — 'mounted up, raised high' saḥ resumes yatra; adhirūḍha = ā + rūḍha, 'climbed up onto', the stage above rūḍhaवह (भाव) 'अधिरूढ' (रूढ से ऊपर चढ़ा हुआ)
nigadyateis called, is named passive: the technical term is assignedकहलाता है
yatra anubhāvāḥ dṛśyante — where the anubhāvas are seen [thus heightened]; saḥ adhirūḍhaḥ nigadyate — that is called adhirūḍha
Wherever the outward signs are seen carried to that indescribable pitch, that condition of love is given the name adhirūḍha — the 'mounted-up' stage.

ajāṇḍa-koṭigam apireaching even to crores of universes — pervading countless world-eggs; api = 'even that far-flung' aja-aṇḍa = 'the egg of the Unborn', a universe; koṭi-ga = 'going through crores'. The commentators split aja two ways — see the noteअज के अण्डों (ब्रह्माण्डों) की करोड़ों तक फैला हुआ भी
traikālikaṁbelonging to all three times — of past, present and future alikeतीनों कालों में रहने वाला
yat sukhaṁwhatever happiness there is yat … (te ubhe, L4) correlative; nominative, one of the two 'heaps'जो सुख
yat sukham — whatever happiness; lokātītam — transcendent; ajāṇḍa-koṭigam api — reaching even to crores of universes; traikālikam — of all three times
Now the illustration. Take all the happiness there is — happiness beyond the world, spread through crores of universes, running across past, present and future. Line 4 will pair it with all the suffering, and line 5 will weigh the pair against a single drop of Rādhā's love.
Verse 171 is the udāharaṇa illustrating adhirūḍha-mahābhāva (the lakṣaṇa of 14.170), spoken by Śiva to his consort Pārvatī (śive, 'O Śivā', in the vocative). On ajāṇḍa the two included commentators pull the word aja apart differently: Viśvanātha (s5) reads it as either aja = māyā (unborn primordial nature) OR aja = Brahmā (the unborn creator), so 'the universes of māyā or of Brahmā'; both readings are kept, not decided. The full verse continues in the lead-in ('tad api tat kuṭa-dvayaṁ … naivābhāsa-tulāṁ śive').

iti— so [these two]; closing the pair off iti gathers 'happiness and suffering' into the two 'heaps'इस प्रकार (ये सुख और दुःख — दो ढेर)
pṛthageach on its own — kept separate, not mixed adverb: the two are massed apart from each otherएक-दूसरे से अलग (राशि के रूप में)
yadiif, supposing — granting the case for argument's sake sets up a concessive 'even if' answered by tad api (in the lead-in)यदि (मान भी लें)
sphuṭamplainly, unmistakably — heaped up in full viewस्पष्ट रूप से
ubhe tethose two — happiness and suffering both nom. dual, subject of gacchataḥवे दोनों

And take all the suffering there is too. Suppose these two — the world's whole happiness and its whole suffering — were each piled up, plainly and separately, into two vast heaps. Even then (the lead-in completes it) that pair of heaps would not measure up to what line 5 names.

bindvor apiof even the two [tiny] drops — a mere droplet from each sea; api = 'even so much as' genitive dual; api pushes the smallness — 'even a drop'एक-एक बिंदु (बूँद) की भी
vindetawould attain, would reach [the likeness of] optative; its subject is 'that pair of heaps' (from the lead-in) and its object is 'even a semblance' (ābhāsa-tulām, lead-in), governed by naiva — 'would never reach'पा सके — (भूमिका के 'नैव' से) कभी न पा सके
[tat kuṭa-dvayam] — [that pair of heaps]; prema-udyat-sukha-duḥkha-sindhu-bhavayoḥ bindvoḥ api — of even the two drops born from the seas of joy and sorrow surging up through [Rādhā's] prema; [ābhāsa-tulām] naiva vindeta — would never reach [even a semblance]
Out of Rādhā's love two whole oceans rise up — one of joy, one of sorrow. Take a single drop from each. That mountainous heap of all worldly and transcendent happiness-and-suffering could never match even a shadow of those two drops. So Śiva tells Pārvatī: the entire universe's joy and grief is not a hint of one drop of Rādhā's prema.
The verb vindeta hangs on words carried in the lead-in of this unit: its subject 'tat kuṭa-dvayam' ('that pair of heaps') and its object 'ābhāsa-tulām' ('a semblance-likeness') under 'naiva' ('never') — the full sragdharā reads '… tad api tat kuṭa-dvayaṁ rādhikā-premodyat-… bindvor api naivābhāsa-tulāṁ śive [vindeta]'. Decoded here as it stands; the completion is Rūpa's own verse, not an addition.

kām api — 'some' [distinction] = anirvacanīyām — indescribable
Jīva pins down the verse's 'some' (kām api): it means a distinction that simply cannot be described. That is why the anubhāvas at this stage are said to defy naming.

Viśvanātha reads L1 the same way but sharpens it: the anubhāvas (and the sāttvika signs) here take on some indescribable distinction — and this is not just the 'su-uddīpta', the super-blazing grade of those signs. The heightening at adhirūḍha is something else again.
su-uddīpta ('intensely kindled') is the top grade in the ordinary scaling of the sāttvika-bhāvas. Viśvanātha's 'na tu sūddīptāḥ' insists the adhirūḍha distinction is not merely that grade but the unnameable viśiṣṭatā of mahābhāva — a different order, not a higher notch on the same scale.

Viśvanātha lays the whole verse out in order. All the happiness and suffering there is — spread through crores of universes (of māyā, or else of Brahmā — he leaves aja readable both ways), across all three times — suppose those two were heaped up, at one time, in one place, each into its own separate mass. Even then, that pair of heaps could never reach even a one-part likeness, even a shadow, of just the two drops thrown up from the twin oceans of joy and sorrow that surge through Rādhā's love. He is careful to name 'that pair of heaps' as the subject and 'never attains' as the verb.
The double reading of aja is Viśvanātha's, kept open with vā: aja = māyā (beginningless material nature) or aja = Brahmā (the unborn creator), hence 'the universes of māyā or of Brahmā'. Not resolved; both stand.

Viśvanātha now blocks an objection. One might reason: the verse calls part of this 'suffering'; a thoughtful person avoids suffering; so mahābhāva must not be a goal worth pursuing. Do not think that, he says. Even ordinary bhakti is itself the very form of Kṛṣṇa's hlādinī (joy) and saṁvit (knowledge) potencies — it is their essence — so nothing about it is really painful in the disqualifying sense.
hlādinī = the Lord's bliss-potency; saṁvit = his knowledge-potency. To call bhakti their svarūpa-bhūta ('constituted of their very nature') and their sāra ('essence') is to say bhakti is made of concentrated bliss and knowledge — so its 'duḥkha' cannot be ordinary pain.

He backs it with a verse: even if the bliss of impersonal Brahman were multiplied a parārdha-fold, it would not come to so much as one atom of the ocean of bhakti's happiness.
Why cited: Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.1.38, adduced to prove that bhakti-happiness immeasurably outstrips even brahmānanda — so bhakti (and all the more mahābhāva) is supreme joy, not something a wise person would shun for its 'suffering'.

He piles on the proof. Scripture says the Lord will sometimes give liberation but withhold bhakti (Bhāgavata 5.6.18) — so bhakti is set above even crores of brahmānanda. And verses like 'though love pours out heat, it is sweeter than crores of moons' settle that even the 'suffering' of prema is really of the nature of happiness. If that holds for ordinary prema, then in mahābhāva it holds all the more, by an emphatic 'how much more'. That, he says, is the real import.
Why cited: Bhāgavata 5.6.18 (and a further 'sweeter than crores of moons' verse) adduced to establish that even prema's apparent suffering is essentially happiness — clinching, by an a-fortiori (kaimutika) step, that mahābhāva's 'suffering' is joy, so the objection of s6 fails.

He gives a homely example. In ordinary life, coolness feels pleasant only when there is heat around to set it off. Here coolness stands for one member of a pair (say, joy/union) and heat for its opposite (pain/longing): each is enjoyable only against the other. The point: pleasure needs its counterpart present to register as pleasure.

autkaṇṭhya-lakṣaṇa-virahasyaof the separation-element marked by longing — the ache of yearning genitive: viraha here means the longing that survives even inside unionउत्कण्ठा रूप विरह का (जो मिलन में भी बना रहता है)
sarvarthaivānapagamādbecause it never departs at all; eva = 'not in the least' ablative of reason: 'because of its total non-departure' (sarvathā eva anapagama)क्योंकि वह किसी भी प्रकार दूर नहीं होता
alam-buddhy-abhāvād evaprecisely because no sense of 'enough' ever arises; eva = 'just because of this' ablative of reason: alam-buddhi = the feeling 'that will do'; its absence keeps desire fresh'बस, अब पर्याप्त' — इस बुद्धि के अभाव के कारण ही
sa saṁyogaḥ sadā sukha-mayo bhavatithat union is always full of pleasure the payoff: love's union never pallsवह संयोग सदा सुखमय रहता है
kṣud-abhāve bhojyam api na sukham — with no hunger, even food is not pleasant; raty-ādi-bhāveṣu saṁyoge api autkaṇṭhya-lakṣaṇa-virahasya sarvathā eva anapagamāt alam-buddhi-abhāvāt eva sa saṁyogaḥ sadā sukha-mayo bhavati — in loves like rati, even in union, because the longing-marked separation never leaves and no 'enough' ever sets in, that union is always full of joy
And to finish the pattern: with no hunger, even food gives no pleasure. Now he applies it to love. In loves like rati, even in the union of lovers the ache of longing never fully departs — one never feels 'that is enough'. And precisely because that yearning stays alive, the union never goes stale: it is pleasurable always. The 'pain' of longing is exactly what keeps the joy of union from ever satiating.
This is the hinge of the argument. The hunger/food and heat/cold examples establish a rule — pleasure lives only where its opposite (the 'painful' member) is also present. Applied to love: longing (the duḥkha element) never leaves, so satiety (alam-buddhi) never sets in, and union stays perpetually sweet. The 'suffering' in prema is thus the very thing that keeps its happiness inexhaustible.

virahe api smaraṇa-sphūrti-āvirbhāva-ādi-janita-mānasa-svāpna-sākṣāt-sambhoga-aviccheda-virahaḥ api sukhamaya eva iti; adhirūḍha-mahābhāve tu saṁyoga-viyoga-lakṣaṇa-sukha-duḥkhayoḥ ukta-prakāreṇa nistulayoḥ dvayoḥ eva yaugapadyāt eva nistula-sukha-rūpatvam
Even in separation it holds. For in the lover's separation, remembrance and sudden vivid visions conjure an unbroken enjoyment — in the mind, in dreams, even as if face to face — so that very separation is pure joy. And in adhirūḍha-mahābhāva above all: here the joy of union and the sorrow of parting are both peerless, and by the same rule they are present at once. Because these two matchless opposites are simultaneous, mahābhāva is a matchless joy. This is the answer to the objection: its 'duḥkha' is inseparable from, and productive of, its incomparable bliss.

prākṛte tu svarga-narakādyoḥ sukha-duḥkhayor yaugapadya-bhāvāt |
prākṛte tuin the mundane world, by contrast; tu = 'whereas' sets the ordinary case against mahābhāvaकिन्तु प्राकृत (सांसारिक) में
svarga-narakādyoḥ sukha-duḥkhayoḥof the happiness and suffering of heaven and hell and the like genitive dual: the worldly pair of pleasure and painस्वर्ग-नरक आदि के सुख और दुःख का
yaugapadya-bhāvātbecause there is no simultaneity of them — they never coincide ablative of reason: yaugapadya-abhāva; heaven's joy and hell's pain cannot occur togetherएक साथ न होने के कारण
prākṛte tu svarga-naraka-ādyoḥ sukha-duḥkhayoḥ yaugapadya-abhāvāt — but in the mundane realm, because heaven's happiness and hell's suffering never occur together
The contrast with the ordinary world: there, the joy of heaven and the pain of hell simply never happen at the same time. Worldly pleasure and pain exclude each other, so worldly pleasure can never be the matchless, self-sustaining joy that mahābhāva is. (The clause runs into the next examples.)

kvacid bhojanārambhādiṣu sukha-duḥkhayor yaugapadye’pi duḥkhābhāvāt sukham apy asukhāyamānam iti |
kvacid bhojanārambhādiṣuin some cases — such as the start of a meal locative: where a worldly pair does briefly coincideकहीं-कहीं भोजन के आरम्भ आदि में (जहाँ सांसारिक युगल क्षण भर एक साथ होता है)
sukha-duḥkhayor yaugapadye’pieven where pleasure and pain do co-occur; api = 'even then' the concession: hunger (pain) and eating (pleasure) together at firstसुख और दुःख के एक साथ होने पर भी
duḥkhābhāvātbecause the pain [soon] drops away — hunger is satisfied and gone ablative of reason: once satiety comes, the duḥkha member vanishes(तृप्ति आने पर) दुःख के अभाव के कारण
sukham apy asukhāyamānameven the pleasure ceases to be a pleasure — the food stops pleasing; api = 'even that' asukhāyamāna = 'behaving as non-pleasure', going flatसुख भी असुख जैसा (फीका) आचरण करने लगता है
iti— so [it goes in the mundane case]इस प्रकार
kvacit bhojana-ārambha-ādiṣu sukha-duḥkhayoḥ yaugapadye api duḥkha-abhāvāt sukham api asukhāyamānam iti — even where, as at the start of a meal, pleasure and pain do coincide, because the pain then disappears, even the pleasure turns flat
Even the apparent exception proves it. At the start of a meal, hunger (pain) and eating (pleasure) do coincide — but once the hunger is gone, the food itself stops tasting good; the pleasure goes flat. So in the world, whenever the 'painful' member drops out, the pleasure dies with it. Only in mahābhāva does the longing never leave, so the joy never dies.

kecit sukha-duḥkhābhāvādy-ātyantiko mokṣa iti mukter lakṣaṇam ity āhuḥ |
kecitsome [thinkers] — a reported view, not his own kecit … āhuḥ frames another school's opinionकुछ लोग (कोई दूसरी शाखा)
sukha-duḥkhābhāvādy-ātyantiko mokṣa itithat liberation is the final, absolute cessation of pleasure and pain and the rest ātyantika = 'ultimate, once-for-all'; their definition of mokṣa as the end of all feelingसुख-दुःख के अभाव आदि का आत्यन्तिक (सदा के लिए) होना ही मोक्ष है — ऐसा
mukter lakṣaṇam ity āhuḥ— this, they say, is the mark of liberation āhuḥ = 'they hold'; the view is only being notedमुक्ति का लक्षण कहते हैं
kecit — 'sukha-duḥkha-abhāva-ādi-ātyantikaḥ mokṣaḥ' iti mukteḥ lakṣaṇam iti āhuḥ — some say that the definition of liberation is the absolute, final absence of pleasure and pain and so on
He notes a rival view. Some hold that liberation just is the total, final absence of all pleasure and pain — that this is the very definition of mukti. He reports it only to set it against the conclusion he is about to draw.

ataḥ premṇa eva parama-puruṣārthatvaṁ netareṣām iti tu siddhānta eva vastutaḥ pravṛttis tu premṇi na sva-sukha-dṛṣṭyā, kintu bhagavat-sukha-dṛṣṭyaiveti tu bhaktānāṁ matam ||
ataḥtherefore — drawing the whole thread together the siddhānta follows from all the foregoingइसलिए (इस सारे विवेचन से)
premṇa eva parama-puruṣārthatvaṁprema alone is the supreme goal of life; eva = 'prema and nothing else' the settled thesis of the passageप्रेम का ही परम पुरुषार्थ होना
netareṣāmnot [the goal-hood] of the others — not mokṣa and the rest na itareṣām: liberation etc. are ruled out of the top placeदूसरों (मोक्ष आदि) का नहीं
iti tu siddhānta eva vastutaḥthis, in truth, is precisely the settled conclusion; tu = 'indeed', eva = 'exactly this' marks it as the fixed doctrinal resultयह तो वस्तुतः सिद्धान्त ही है
pravṛttis tu premṇi na sva-sukha-dṛṣṭyābut engagement in prema is NOT with an eye to one's own happiness; tu = 'yet' a crucial qualification: even though prema is the supreme joy, that is not why the devotee pursues itकिन्तु प्रेम में प्रवृत्ति अपने सुख की दृष्टि से नहीं (होती)
kintu bhagavat-sukha-dṛṣṭyaivetirather, only with an eye to Bhagavān's happiness; eva = 'solely' kintu = 'but rather'; the true motive is the Lord's pleasure, not one's ownअपितु भगवान के सुख की दृष्टि से ही — इस प्रकार
tu bhaktānāṁ matam— this is the view of the devotees genitive: whose settled position this last point isयह भक्तों का मत है
ataḥ premṇaḥ eva parama-puruṣārthatvaṁ na itareṣām iti tu siddhāntaḥ eva vastutaḥ; pravṛttiḥ tu premṇi na sva-sukha-dṛṣṭyā kintu bhagavat-sukha-dṛṣṭyā eva iti tu bhaktānāṁ matam
So the conclusion: prema alone is the highest goal of life — not liberation, not anything else. That is the settled truth. But Viśvanātha adds one guard: the devotees do not take up prema for the sake of their own happiness, however supreme that happiness is. They take it up solely with an eye to Kṛṣṇa's happiness. That last point, he says, is the devotees' own understanding.
The passage lands on two claims held apart: (1) the objective fact — prema is the parama-puruṣārtha, exceeding even mokṣa; (2) the devotees' subjective stance — they still engage in it not for their own bliss but only for Bhagavān's pleasure. Both stand; the second does not cancel the first.
