adaḥthat — the world beyond Viśvanātha (s9) reads 'adaḥ' as para-loka, the next worldउस को — विश्वनाथ 'अदः' को परलोक मानते हैं
tathā idamand likewise this — the present world Viśvanātha (s10) reads 'idam' as iha-loka, this worldतथा इस को — विश्वनाथ 'इदम्' को इहलोक मानते हैं

They — their minds bound fast by unbroken attachment to Me — did not know their own bodies, nor that world beyond, nor this world here.
An udāharaṇa for the topic 'mohādy-abhāve'pi sarva-vismaraṇam' — total forgetting even where there is no moha (swoon) or the like. The gopīs' love reaches such a pitch that they forget self and both worlds, not from any fainting-fit but simply because Kṛṣṇa alone fills their minds. The verse is Bhāgavatam 11.12.12, spoken by Kṛṣṇa to Uddhava while praising holy company.

like rivers that have flowed in and lost themselves — so the gopīs knew nothing of name and form.
Viśvanātha (s11–s12) hears 'nāma-rūpe' twice over: in the sage-simile it is the whole world of name-and-form that absorption blots out (the 'forgetting-everything' side); in the river-simile it is the rivers' own name and form, dissolved on merging into the sea (the 'relishing-and-merging' side). The gopīs' state carries both at once.

The heading runs: 'even where moha (swoon) and the like are absent, there is still total forgetting.' Jīva reads it thus — the absence of moha is bounded by Kṛṣṇa's vivid manifestation. It is only toward Kṛṣṇa, who shines vividly in them, that there is no moha; Him they never lose.
moha: a swoon or fainting of the mind — one of the vyabhicāri (passing) emotions that would normally black out awareness. The puzzle the heading poses: total forgetting usually comes from such a swoon, yet here it comes with no swoon at all.

And the 'total forgetting' means this: they forget everything that is not Him. So both halves of the heading stand together — no moha toward Kṛṣṇa, and yet total forgetting of all else. To show it, Rūpa quotes the verse 'tā nāvidan...'

For the verse itself lays out both halves. 'Mayy anuṣaṅga' — attachment to Me — shows that Kṛṣṇa alone shines in their minds: that is the no-moha side. The one word 'bound' opens out into a whole picture of tethered cows — fitting, since these are cowherd women. Three things are laid over the scene: Kṛṣṇa's wondrous, world-bewitching pastimes are the post; the gopīs' attachment is the strong rope; and their very mind-movements are a herd of wish-fulfilling cows (kāma-dhenus) that fetch whatever Kṛṣṇa wants. Minds tied by the rope of love to the post of His play — that is the force of 'baddha.'
āropa: the poetic device of superimposing one image over another (here a tethered-cow scene over the gopīs' bound minds). kāma-dhenu: the mythic cow that yields every wish.

'Svam ātmānam' is their own self, the body — and that they did not know. In the rāsa dance, on the way to a tryst, and the like, they never tracked where their body was standing or where it was heading.
abhisāra: a heroine's journey out, through the night, to meet her beloved — a set moment in this poetry when all self-awareness is lost.

The first simile: 'sages in samādhi.' Just as in their total forgetting the experience of brahman swells and drowns out everything else, so for the gopīs the experience of Kṛṣṇa drowns out everything else. The mapping: the sages are the gopīs; brahman-experience is Kṛṣṇa-experience; and its overflowing is what erases all other awareness. This simile answers only to the 'forgetting-everything' side of their state.

The second simile: rivers flowing into the sea. Once merged, they no longer know their own name and form — they are simply the ocean now. So the gopīs, merged in Kṛṣṇa, lose their separate selves. The mapping: rivers are the gopīs; the ocean is Kṛṣṇa; the losing of their own name and form is their dissolving into the taste of Him. This simile answers to the other side — the 'relishing-the-rasa' side, the merging. Note how Viśvanātha splits the verse's one word 'nāma-rūpe' across the two similes: for the sages it was the outer world they forgot; for the rivers it is their own name and form they lose.
