Jīva first sets up an objection so he can knock it down. Someone might say: the old maxim runs, 'relatives' hearts dread any harm to their loved one.' The gopīs are just like that — worried kin, acting only for Kṛṣṇa's happiness. And since that motive shows up even in ordinary rati, the mahā-bhāva definition here ('grieving amid his joy') is nothing distinctive. This is the view he means to refute.

His answer: no — there IS something unique here, and to prove it he calls the Bhāgavata itself as witness, quoting the Tenth Canto.

tathā hito spell it out—वह इस प्रकार
yat te sujātam iti asya ayam arthaḥthis is the sense of 'yat te sujātam…''
he priya!O beloved!
aparihārya-prema-viṣaya!O object of a love we cannot shake off! aparihārya = that cannot be removed — unpacking why 'priya'हे अनिवार्य प्रेम के विषय!
te tava yat sujāta-caraṇāmburuhaṁyour lotus-foot that is 'sujāta'तेरा जो 'सुजात' (अत्यन्त कोमल) चरण-कमल
sukomalaṁexceedingly tenderअत्यन्त कोमल
kamala-rūpakeṇāpi nirūpyathough he has already pictured it by the metaphor of a lotus api = even after the lotus-image was usedकमल के रूपक से निरूपित करके भी ('अपि' = कमल का उपमान लगा लेने के बाद भी)
komalatayā punaḥ tādṛśa-śabdena viśeṣyaṁfor its tenderness he qualifies it AGAIN by such a word ('sujāta') the double stress on softness — lotus-image plus 'sujāta'कोमलता के कारण फिर 'सुजात' जैसे शब्द से विशेषित — कोमलता पर दोहरा बल (कमल का रूपक और 'सुजात' दोनों)
staneṣu śanaiḥ dadhīmahiwe place [it] gently on our breastsस्तनों पर धीरे से रखती हैं
he priya! aparihārya-prema-viṣaya! — O beloved, object of a love we cannot escape; te yat sujāta-caraṇāmburuham sukomalam — your lotus-foot, called 'sujāta,' utterly tender; kamala-rūpakeṇāpi nirūpya punaḥ komalatayā tādṛśa-śabdena viśeṣyaṁ — having pictured it as a lotus, he stresses its softness once more with the word 'sujāta'; staneṣu śanaiḥ dadhīmahi — we set it gently on our breasts.
tathā hi — वह इस प्रकार; yat te sujātam iti asya ayam arthaḥ — इस पद का यह अर्थ; he priya!
Now Jīva reads the verse out. 'O beloved — you whom we can never stop loving!' Notice, he says, the poet has already called the foot a lotus, yet adds 'sujāta' on top of that — a second stress on how tender it is. And this exquisitely soft foot we lay gently on our breasts.

na idam anyathā vyanakti[the poet] indicates just this, nothing else the plural means only 'they are many,' with no hidden senseयह किसी अन्य अर्थ को प्रकट नहीं करता (बहुवचन का इतना ही अर्थ कि वे अनेक हैं)
bahutvaṁ sarvānubhava-siddhyā — the plural, a thing plain to everyone's experience; na idam anyathā vyanakti — the poet reveals just this and no more.
The plural forms ('we place,' 'breasts') simply show the gopīs are many — a fact anyone can see. The poet means nothing more subtle by it.

Now a grammatical worry. 'Dadhīmahi' is middle voice, which signals that the fruit of the act goes to the doer — so it could sound as if the gopīs press his feet for their own pleasure, like lustful women. Jīva answers with the word sitting right next to the verb: 'priya,' O beloved. Because he is the beloved, the act is love, not lust.

priyatvāt eva tat dadhīmahi — just because you are our beloved we hold it there; priyasya sparśāt tatrāpi hṛdi sparśāt yat sukhaṁ — the joy of the beloved's touch, and his touch on the very heart; tat tad dhi jānanti tad-vidaḥ iti nyāyāt — 'only the knowers know that,' runs the maxim; taiḥ eva kāmyaṁ na tu bhavad-vidhaiḥ — it is theirs alone to savour, not yours.

The pleasure is real, but it is the pleasure of love. Because you are the beloved, we hold your foot on our breast, over the heart — and the joy of the beloved's touch there is a joy only those who have tasted it can know. It is for such knowers to relish — not, she teases, for the likes of you, who roam about heedless of it.

Here is Jīva's clinching point, answering the objection of s1. Ordinary relatives fear harm only where harm is genuinely possible — a real danger to the loved one.

tat-caraṇa-sparśena api[who fear harm] even from the touch of his foot api = even from a touch that could not possibly hurt himउसके चरण के स्पर्श से भी ('अपि' = ऐसे स्पर्श से भी, जिससे उसे हानि हो ही नहीं सकती)

na tu āsām iva tac-caraṇa-sparśenāpi — not, however, as with these gopīs, who fear even where his own foot's touch could do no harm; iti gamyate — thus it is understood.
But the gopīs are different. They fear harm even where none is possible — imagining that his own tender foot, merely touching their breast, might be bruised. That impossible fear is the distinctiveness the objector denied. This is the technical contrast: an ordinary relative's dread attaches only to real dangers; the gopīs' dread reaches even to what cannot happen — and that reach is the mark of mahā-bhāva.

And take the objector's other claim — that acting only for Kṛṣṇa's joy shows up even in ordinary rati. Grant it. Even so, in mahā-bhāva that same trait blazes out far more intensely. Shared at a low grade, it reaches its fullness only here.

He closes with an analogy. Sugarcane is sweet even raw, but its sweetness comes to its full only when it is ripened down. Map it over: the sweetness is the trait of loving only for Kṛṣṇa's sake; the raw cane is ordinary rati, where it is faintly present; the ripened stage is mahā-bhāva, where the same sweetness reaches its peak. The analogy proves the trait is one of degree — real at every grade, but supreme here — and settles the objection that it is 'nothing distinctive.'

Now the contrast — and this is the heart of it. The gopīs know perfectly well that Kṛṣṇa is in nothing but great bliss; not even a scrap of pain is possible for him. And yet, out of sheer love-born fear, they think, 'I don't know — could there be some hurt to him here?' They lay a pain on him that isn't there at all, and grieve over it. That grief — fear of an impossible hurt, in the very midst of his joy — is unlike anything else in the world, and it is precisely the mark of mahā-bhāva.

Two more guesses, neither chosen. One: the sight of their pain is his delight, so he counts even his foot's hurt a pleasure. The other plays on a maxim — 'you take on the traits of what you touch.' Your heart, once soft as a flower, went hard from pressing against our hard breasts; and by that very same contact your foot went hard too — so now the pebbles cannot hurt it. A tender reproach dressed as logic.

'…then the fierce torments I inflict will burn their lives away, and they will die at once.'

'And then whom would I have left to torment?' — the Creator's worry, if his victims die.

'So,' the Creator concludes, 'I shall lodge their lives inside Kṛṣṇa — my accomplice, cruel as I am — and then, unable to die, they will taste sorrow without end, as long as I please.' A dark conceit that explains why the gopīs cannot even die of their grief.

Or read the ending another way, which Viśvanātha lets stand beside the first. On this reading, 'the mind reels' just means that, unable to settle on any of those reasons, only our mind is thrown into disorder — while these sufferings still cannot destroy us. Both readings are kept.

tatra hetuḥ bhavad-āyuṣām iti — the ground for that is 'bhavad-āyuṣām.'
And on this reading too, the word 'bhavad-āyuṣām' carries the reason we are not destroyed — but it is now parsed differently, as the next line shows.

bhavanti vartamānāy āyūṁṣi yāsāṁ tāsām |

vartamānāni āyūṁṣi yāsāṁ tāsāmof those whose life-breaths are yet current bahuvrīhi — 'bhavad-āyuṣ' = whose life still continuesजिनके प्राण वर्तमान (बने हुए) हैं, उनके (बहुव्रीहि — 'भवदायुष्' = जिनका जीवन अब भी चल रहा है)
bhavanti vartamānāni āyūṁṣi yāsāṁ tāsām — 'bhavad-āyuṣām' = of us whose life-breaths are still present and ongoing.
Here is the different parse — the śleṣa on 'bhavat.' Earlier it was 'in you'; now it is read as the participle 'being, still present.' So 'bhavad-āyuṣām' means: we whose life-breaths yet continue, still running on.

ṛjuḥ eva arthaḥis the plain, straightforward sense eva — nothing fanciful, just the direct meaningसीधा-सा ही अर्थ है ('एव' — कुछ कल्पित नहीं, केवल सरल अर्थ)
āyur marmāṇi rakṣati iti ṛjur evārthaḥ — the plain sense: 'as long as life-breath remains, it protects the vital points' [so we are not destroyed].
And its plain sense rests on the old saying, 'life-breath guards the vital organs' — while lifespan holds, the vital points are kept safe. Since our life-breaths still run on, they protect us, and the sufferings cannot destroy us.

yad vā evaṁ dhīr eva tad-aniścayād bhramati — or: thus it is only the mind that reels, for want of settling the cause.
Or yet again: it is only the mind that reels, from failing to fix on any one reason — but with a different turn, given in the next line.

On this turn, the mind reels — but the life-breath is another matter: 'our very breath is now certainly leaving the body; look and see for yourself, Kṛṣṇa!' A warning, where the earlier reading had said they could not die. Viśvanātha lets it stand too.

One last reading of the same word, again left standing. If your life remains, how can you speak of death? — They answer: 'bhavad-āyuṣām' means 'we whose lives are surrendered to you.' 'Our own life-breaths we now hand over to you; take them and sport long in Vraja.' So the very word yields several readings — lives lodged in you, lives still running on, lives given away to you — and Viśvanātha settles none.
