This closes the definition of mahā-bhāva. Its beauty is like the choicest nectar — nothing tastes higher. And it does something to the mind: it draws the mind entirely into its own nature. The mind does not merely feel mahā-bhāva; it becomes mahā-bhāva. That total takeover is the peak the commentators will unpack.
The last quarter of verse 157, completing the lakṣaṇa of mahā-bhāva, the highest ripening of rati begun in the earlier half.

Jīva introduces the half-verse. Having defined mahā-bhāva directly, Rūpa now establishes the same thing a second way — through its sheer greatness. The 'varāmṛta' line does that: it shows mahā-bhāva's power by what it does to the mind.

He unpacks the compound as a bahuvrīhi. 'The one the splendor of whose nature is like the finest nectar' — that is this mahā-bhāva, a thing of great power. The word varāmṛta (choicest nectar) names how supremely tasteable it is.

Jīva reads the phrase as an exclusion. If mahā-bhāva pulls the mind wholly into itself, then no other state of the mind can survive. He offers a parallel: the scriptural line that Kṛṣṇa's sixteen thousand queens could not agitate his senses even with Kāma's arrows — his senses stayed fixed, no other condition arose. Read it the same way here: once mahā-bhāva takes the mind, nothing else remains for the mind to do.
The analogy maps only in its logic, not its emotional color: as Kṛṣṇa's senses admit no disturbance, so the mahā-bhāva-filled mind admits no other state. It is cited for the structure 'X leaves room for nothing else,' not to compare mahā-bhāva to the queens' failed advances.

Jīva flags a bad reading of an earlier phrase, 'yāvad-āśraya-vṛtti.' Suppose you read it as 'mahā-bhāva pervades as many observers as there are abodes.' Then you are forced to prop in the missing correlative word tāvat ('that-many') that the text never gives — an awkward interpolation. Grammatically the reading costs too much.
adhyāhāra — supplying a word not present in the text to make a construction work. It is legitimate when unavoidable, a defect (kaṣṭa) when a cleaner reading needs none.

Jīva finishes the difficulty and turns to the next verse. On that faulty reading, everyone who beholds mahā-bhāva would rank equal to it — plainly wrong. The clean point is that even the lowest rati has its own private, self-known state; the private-experience mark belongs to rati as such. So Rūpa now traces how that one rati climbs by stages, showing its heightening — and that is what 'sa rūḍhaś ca' (verse 158) sets out.

tat-tat-vyāpāraiḥ sarvaiḥ evaby every one of their various activities instrumental of means; eva = 'all without exception'उन-उन समस्त व्यापारों के द्वारा ही — 'एव' अर्थात् बिना किसी अपवाद के सबके
śrī-kṛṣṇasya ati-vaśyatvaṁŚrī Kṛṣṇa's being utterly under their sway genitive — 'of Kṛṣṇa'; ati- = to the extremeश्रीकृष्ण का अत्यन्त वश में होना — 'अति' अर्थात् चरम सीमा तक
yukti-siddham eva bhavetstands proven by plain reason eva = 'simply, as a matter of course'युक्ति से सहज ही सिद्ध हो जाता है — 'एव' अर्थात् अनायास, स्वतः ही
tena — therefore; indriyāṇāṁ mano-vṛtti-rūpatvāt — since the senses are workings of the mind; vraja-sundarīṇāṁ mana-ādi-sarva-indriyāṇāṁ mahā-bhāva-rūpatvāt — since the gopīs' mind and all senses are of the form of mahā-bhāva; tat-tat-vyāpāraiḥ sarvaiḥ eva — by all their several activities; śrī-kṛṣṇasya ati-vaśyatvaṁ — Kṛṣṇa's utter subjugation; yukti-siddham eva bhavet — is established by reason itself.
Now the payoff. The senses are only extensions of the mind's activity. So once the gopīs' mind is wholly mahā-bhāva, all their senses are mahā-bhāva too. Then every single thing they do — a glance, a word, a step — is mahā-bhāva in action. And that is exactly why Kṛṣṇa falls completely under their power: reason alone forces the conclusion. The verse's claim about the mind explains the gopīs' hold over Kṛṣṇa.

paṭṭa-mahiṣīṇāṁ tubut as for the crowned queens [of Dvārakā] tu = 'but,' turning to the contrast case; genitive whose mind is judged belowपरन्तु पट्ट-महिषियों (पटरानियों) का — 'तु' विरुद्ध पक्ष की ओर मोड़ देता है, जिनके मन का अब निर्णय होता है
sambhoga-icchāyāḥtheir desire for union genitive — the craving for enjoyment that is at issueसंभोग की इच्छा का — यही इच्छा यहाँ विचार्य है
pārthakyena api sthitatvātbecause it stands as something separate as well ablative of cause; api = 'even here it keeps a separate footing,' unlike the gopīs' undivided mindपृथक् रूप में भी बने रहने के कारण — 'अपि' अर्थात् यहाँ वह अलग टिकाव रखती है, गोपियों के अभिन्न मन के विपरीत
samyak-prema-ātmakam api manaḥ na syāttheir mind is not even fully prema, let alone mahā-bhāva api = 'even'; the concession runs the ladder down — not mahā-bhāva, not even complete premaउनका मन पूर्ण प्रेम-स्वरूप भी नहीं होता — 'अपि' अर्थात् 'भी'; सीढ़ी नीचे उतरती है — महाभाव तो दूर, पूर्ण प्रेम भी नहीं
paṭṭa-mahiṣīṇāṁ tu — but for the chief queens; sambhoga-icchāyāḥ pārthakyena api sthitatvāt — because their desire for union stands separately too; samyak-prema-ātmakam api manaḥ na syāt — their mind is not even of the nature of full prema.
He draws the contrast. Take the crowned queens of Dvārakā. In them the desire for union still stands as a separate thing, off to the side of their love. Because of that leftover, their mind is not even complete prema — never mind mahā-bhāva. Where love leaves room for a self-standing craving, the mind has not been fully taken over.

He closes with a rhetorical question. If the queens' mind is not even full prema, then how could anyone so much as raise the question of its being mahā-bhāva? The answer is plain: there is no room for the question at all. Mahā-bhāva belongs to the gopīs of Vraja alone.
