kusumbha-rāgaḥ sa jñeyo yaś citte sajjati drutam |
kusumbha-rāgaḥsafflower-dye love — kusumbha, the safflower flower, plus rāga, which means at once 'a dye' and 'a love' the whole verse rides on the śleṣa of rāga: dye / passionकुसुम्भ का रंग — और साथ ही कुसुम्भ-जैसा राग (प्रेम); 'राग' यहाँ रंग भी है और प्रेम भी

saḥ — that; kusumbha-rāgaḥ jñeyaḥ — is to be known as safflower-love; yaḥ — which; citte — in the heart; drutam sajjati — attaches quickly.
That love is to be known as kusumbha-rāga, 'safflower-dye love' — the one that takes to the heart quickly. The word rāga carries two senses at once, a dye and a love, and the whole verse works by that pun.
kusumbha (safflower) is the third of the graded dye-loves: a dye that takes fast but is not the most permanent — set here against māñjiṣṭha (madder), the fastest, deepest color that the commentary keeps invoking as the higher term.

It brings out the hue of the other dyes, and shines as befits the case. Reading rāga as love: this love draws out the luster of the other loves and glows to just the right measure.

In the case of safflower-love, Jīva says, the illustration side — actual safflower dye — is already familiar to everyone. So nothing needs saying about the dye; the work is to map it onto the love.
A dṛṣṭānta / dārṣṭāntika pair: the dṛṣṭānta is the everyday example (safflower dye), the dārṣṭāntika is the thing it is brought in to illustrate (the love). 'A candle shows how the sun gives light' — the candle is the dṛṣṭānta, the sun's shining is the dārṣṭāntika.

'Other dye' means the fresh dye laid on again and again — first, second, third dipping. Safflower brings out its luster precisely through those repeated dyeings. It is not like madder, which throws up its supreme color in a single dip.
Dyer's contrast the verse leans on: safflower (kusumbha) deepens by repeated dippings, each pass adding hue; madder (māñjiṣṭha) is the fast, deep color fixed in one application. The metaphor rates loves the same way — one that grows by stages versus one supreme from the start.

Why does it attach so fast? Viśvanātha reasons it out with an image. Put a little ghee into a large pot of honey: warmed by the honey, the small ghee melts and blends into it at once, no waiting. Read the mapping: the little ghee is the small, new love forming in the heart; the abundant honey is the great surrounding love it meets; the honey's warmth is the contact of association; the instant melting-and-blending is the 'quick attaching' of the verse. The analogy proves only that no delay is needed — that quick attachment stands to reason.
śleṣa on sneha: the word means both an unctuous substance (ghee, oil) and 'affection.' The ghee-and-honey are literally fats and sweets, and at the same time two loves — which is why the mixing image carries the point about love attaching.

anya-rāgaḥ atra māñjiṣṭha-lākṣādi — here 'the other dye' is madder, lac, and so on; tasya eva chaviṁ vyañjayati iti — it brings out the luster of that very dye; śyāmalādīnāṁ rāgaḥ śrī-rādhikādi-rāga-sādṛśyaṁ prāpnoti iti arthaḥ — meaning: the love of Śyāmalā and the rest comes to resemble the love of Śrī Rādhikā and the rest.
For Viśvanātha, 'the other dye' here is the superior dye — madder, lac, and their kind. Safflower brings out the luster of that higher dye. Reading the love: the love of Śyāmalā and the other gopīs comes to resemble the love of Śrī Rādhikā and hers. So Viśvanātha names who has the safflower-love — the companion gopīs — and whose supreme madder-love it grows to look like: Rādhā's.
