Once, in a lovely bower where the dark had already worn down to almost nothing, you stood there frightened —
An udāharaṇa of rāga — the heightened stage of love in which mounting hardship on the path to the tryst is felt as mounting joy. Introduced by the lead-in 'yathā—'. Viśvanātha (s9–s10) reads the verse as displaying rāga's marks: bhīrutā-prāthamya (timidity came first), cira-sādhyatva (it is won only slowly), and prakāśādhikya (it now shows in full force).

A certain proud heroine, when she was begged to come to the tryst, made her fear a mere excuse and would not go. Later, longing drove her to set out on her own. Seeing that, the go-between (dūtī) teases her — 'purā...'.
