L1definition
madīyatātiśaya-bhāk priye sneho bhaven madhu |
madīyatā-atiśaya-bhāksharing a heightened sense of 'he is mine' bahuvrīhi qualifying sneha; -bhāk = 'partaking of'; madīyatā = mine-ness, atiśaya = its excessजो 'यह मेरा है' इस मेरेपन की अधिकता को धारण करे — उसका भागी हो
priyetoward the beloved [Kṛṣṇa] locative — the one the love is aimed atप्रिय (प्रियतम) में — जिसकी ओर यह प्रेम लक्षित है
snehaḥthe sneha (melting-love)स्नेह
bhavetbecomes — is to be called optative used definitionallyहो — (परिभाषा के रूप में) होता है
priye — toward the beloved; madīyatā-atiśaya-bhāk snehaḥ — the sneha that carries a heightened 'he is mine'; madhu bhavet — becomes madhu (honey).
This defines the second kind of sneha. When love for the beloved carries a heightened sense of 'he is mine,' that melting-love is called madhu — honey.
sneha (melting-love) divides into two: ghṛta-sneha (ghee-love) and madhu-sneha (honey-love). The earlier verse gave ghṛta; verses 93-94 give madhu. The whole passage runs a śleṣa on the word madhu, which means at once 'honey' and 'mead, sweet liquor' — every mark of this love is stated so as to fit both the honey and the mead.
L2definition
svayaṁ prakaṭa-mādhuryo nānā-rasa-samāhṛtiḥ ||
svayaṁ prakaṭa-mādhuryaḥwith its sweetness showing of itself bahuvrīhi — mādhurya (sweetness) that is prakaṭa (evident) svayam (on its own), not borrowed by contact with anything elseजिसकी मधुरता स्वयं ही प्रकट है — किसी अन्य के संसर्ग से उधार ली हुई नहीं
nānā-rasa-samāhṛtiḥa gathering-together of many rasas bahuvrīhi; nānā-rasa = the various moods (love-reading) or the various flower-nectars (honey-reading); samāhṛti = a collectionजो नाना रसों (भावों / पुष्प-रसों) का समूह है
svayaṁ prakaṭa-mādhuryaḥ — its sweetness self-evident; nānā-rasa-samāhṛtiḥ — a gathering of many rasas.
Two more marks of this madhu-love. Its sweetness shows of itself, needing nothing added. And it draws many rasas into one. Read on the honey side: honey is sweet on its own, and is gathered from many flowers.
Both marks are chosen for the śleṣa: 'self-evident sweetness' and 'a collection of many rasas' describe honey as exactly as they describe the love.
L3definition
mattatoṣma-dharaḥ sneho madhu-sāmyān madhūcyate ||
mattatā-ūṣma-dharaḥbearing intoxication and heat bahuvrīhi; mattatā = rapture/intoxication, ūṣmā = heat (glossed below as pride), dhara = bearing (Jīva: bestowing)जो मत्तता (उन्माद) और ऊष्मा (गर्व) को धारण करता है
snehaḥthis snehaस्नेह
madhu-sāmyātbecause it is like madhu ablative of cause; sāmya = likeness — the ground on which the name is givenमधु के साथ समानता के कारण
mattatā-ūṣma-dharaḥ snehaḥ — the sneha that bears rapture and heat; madhu-sāmyāt — because of its likeness to madhu; madhu ucyate — is called madhu.
And it carries intoxication and heat. Because in every one of these ways the love resembles madhu, it is named madhu. Read on the mead side: drinking mead brings on intoxication and a flush of heat.
The verse closes the śleṣa by naming its own ground: the love is called madhu madhu-sāmyāt, 'from its likeness to madhu' — so all four marks (self-sweetness, many rasas, intoxication, heat) are the points of that likeness.

Jīva draws a lesson from the phrase 'heightened mine-ness.' Love can arise in two ways, depending on how the heart holds the beloved: either 'I am his' or 'he is mine.'

Why the word 'excess' (atiśaya)? Jīva explains: in ghṛta-sneha too there is some faint 'he is mine' feeling. But it is eclipsed by the overpowering 'I am his,' so it does not count. Only where 'he is mine' predominates do we speak of excess.

And so a further point is suggested. The great reverence that marks ghṛta-sneha springs precisely from the 'I am his' feeling: feeling that one belongs to him, one holds him in awe.

Why call these bhāvas 'rasas'? Because, as the maxim runs, 'all are rasas, since they are relished.' So the bhāvas too count as rasas — which is why the verse can say 'many rasas.'

Viśvanātha ties it back to an earlier verse. What 14.63 called 'the bhāva that binds the young couple' is exactly this pair of feelings: 'I am his beloved' and 'he is my beloved.'
Why cited: UN 14.63, on 'the bhāva that binds the youthful pair,' is adduced to identify that binding-bhāva with the two feelings 'I am his' and 'he is mine' — grounding the whole ghṛta/madhu distinction in an earlier definition.

dvitīya-bhāvanāyāḥ ādhikye satiwhen the second feeling ('he is mine') prevails locative absoluteजब दूसरी भावना की अधिकता हो
tatra — of these two; ādya-bhāvanāyāḥ ādhikye sati citta-drave — when the heart melts and the first feeling prevails; ghṛta-snehaḥ — ghṛta-sneha; dvitīya-bhāvanāyāḥ ādhikye sati citta-drave — when it melts and the second prevails; madhu-snehaḥ — madhu-sneha.
Now he sorts the two. When the heart melts and the first feeling — 'I am his' — prevails, that is ghṛta-sneha. When it melts and the second — 'he is mine' — prevails, that is madhu-sneha.

But really, Viśvanātha cautions, both feelings are always present in both loves. It is only by the rule 'a thing is named for what predominates in it' that we call ghṛta-sneha 'made of I-am-his' and madhu-sneha 'made of he-is-mine.'
The nyāya bhūmnā vyapadeśā bhavanti — 'designations follow the predominant element': a grove holding both mango and other trees is still called a mango-grove if mangoes predominate. So too here, each love is named for the feeling that prevails, not the only feeling present.

The contrast: in ghṛta-sneha — and in ghee itself — sweetness arrives only by contact with something added, like sugar stirred into ghee. Not so with madhu. Honey is sweet of itself; and madhu-love needs no other mood added to be sweet.

Viśvanātha glosses 'nānā-rasa-samāhṛti' on both levels of the pun. On the love side, the many rasas are moods to be described later — kauṭilya (a lover's crookedness), narma (teasing play), and the rest. On the honey side, they are the nectars of many different flowers. Either way, the compound means 'the one in which these are gathered.'
Viśvanātha keeps the śleṣa live throughout: the very same compound names the many amorous moods (love-reading) and the many flower-nectars in the honeycomb (honey-reading).

Viśvanātha fills in both terms. 'mattatā' (intoxication) is being so weighed down by that joy that one notices nothing else. 'ūṣmā' (heat) means pride (garva). And 'mattatoṣma-dhara' is the one who bears these two — rapture and pride.
This supplies what Jīva left open at s11 ('ūṣmā will be explained later'): Viśvanātha glosses ūṣmā as garva, pride.
