patnī-bhāva iti — by 'patnī-bhāva'; loka-dharma-apekṣitā darśitā — its regard for worldly propriety is shown.
patnī-bhāva iti — 'पत्नी-भाव' इस पद से; loka-dharma-apekṣitā — लोक-धर्म की अपेक्षा रखने वाली; darśitā — (रति) दिखाई गई है।
Jīva starts with 'patnī-bhāva.' The word 'wife' shows that this love keeps within loka-dharma — the recognized social and religious norm of proper wedded union. It rests on a lawful, publicly acknowledged marriage.
'पत्नी-भाव' इस पद के द्वारा ऐसी रति दिखाई गई है जो लोक-धर्म (विवाह आदि सांसारिक मर्यादा) की अपेक्षा रखती है।

tat-prādurbhūtā iti eva arthaḥmeans simply 'made manifest by that hearing' -jā glossed as prādurbhūtā (brought to the surface), not 'freshly produced''उससे प्रादुर्भूत (प्रकट) हुई' — यही अर्थ है
guṇādi-śravaṇādi-jā iti — this word; tat-prādurbhūtā iti eva arthaḥ — means only 'made manifest by that [hearing]'.
guṇādi-śravaṇādi-jā iti — 'गुणादि-श्रवणादि-जा' इस पद का; tat-prādurbhūtā iti eva arthaḥ — 'उससे प्रकट हुई' — यही अर्थ है।
The next word, 'guṇādi-śravaṇādi-jā.' The ending '-jā' ('born of') is to be read narrowly: it means only that the love is brought to the surface by that hearing — made manifest, not freshly created.
'गुणादि-श्रवणादि-जा' का अर्थ है — उस (श्रवण आदि) से प्रादुर्भूत अर्थात् प्रकट हुई; यही तात्पर्य है।

na tūtpadyamāneti janī prādurbhāve iti dhātu-pāṭhāt |
na tu utpadyamānā itinot 'coming newly into being' tu rules out the rival 'origination' sense of -jā'(नई) उत्पन्न हो रही है' — ऐसा अर्थ नहीं, परन्तु
janī prādurbhāve iti dhātu-pāṭhātbecause the Dhātupāṭha lists the root janī in the sense 'manifestation' ablative of reason: the grammarians' root-list settles the meaningक्योंकि धातुपाठ में 'जनी प्रादुर्भावे' (जन् धातु प्रादुर्भाव अर्थ में) — ऐसा (कहा गया) है
na tu utpadyamānā iti — not 'being newly produced'; janī prādurbhāve iti dhātu-pāṭhāt — because the Dhātupāṭha gives 'janī, in the sense of appearing'.
na tu utpadyamānā iti — 'उत्पन्न हो रही है' ऐसा नहीं; janī prādurbhāve iti dhātu-pāṭhāt — क्योंकि धातुपाठ में 'जनी प्रादुर्भावे' ऐसा है।
And why read '-jā' as 'made manifest' rather than 'produced anew'? Because the root behind it, √jan, is glossed in the Dhātupāṭha as 'janī prādurbhāve' — 'janī, in the sense of coming-into-view.' So the word means the love shows itself, not that it is born from scratch.
'(नई) उत्पन्न हो रही' — ऐसा अर्थ नहीं; क्योंकि धातुपाठ में 'जनी प्रादुर्भावे' — इस प्रकार जन् धातु का अर्थ प्रादुर्भाव (प्रकट होना) बताया गया है।
The Dhātupāṭha is the traditional list of Sanskrit verbal roots with their meanings; 'janī prādurbhāve' is its entry glossing this root as 'appearing / becoming manifest.' Jīva cites it to lock '-jā' to 'manifested,' not 'originated.'
धातुपाठ संस्कृत धातुओं की उनके अर्थों सहित पारम्परिक सूची है; 'जनी प्रादुर्भावे' उसी की वह प्रविष्टि है जो इस धातु का अर्थ 'प्रकट होना / व्यक्त होना' बताती है। जीव इसे उद्धृत करके '-जा' को 'प्रकट हुई' अर्थ में निश्चित करते हैं, 'उत्पन्न हुई' अर्थ में नहीं।

Why insist the love is only 'made manifest'? Because Rukmiṇī and the rest are his beloveds by their very nature, and their love for him is inborn. What is already native cannot be freshly produced by a report; the hearing only wakes what was always there.

Now the phrase 'bhedita-sambhoga-tṛṣṇā.' Picture a queen whose love is already more than full. Yet sometimes a wish rises in her — to stand on equal footing in his affection — and it leaves her pained. At such moments a thirst for union shows itself, standing apart from the steady current of her inborn love. What is this thirst? The wish to bring Kṛṣṇa, its object, under her sway and keep him close by her — voiced through all the fitting hāva and bhāva (the play of amorous gestures and moods). Jīva's image: her love is a river, and this thirst rises now and then like swelling waves breaking across its surface — only sometimes, and only on top.

Finally 'sāndrā,' dense. By calling the love thick-packed, the verse shows that no other feeling can force its way inside it. So that separate feeling — the thirst for union — can only sit outside, on the rim. This is why it is called 'set apart' (bhedita): the love is too dense to admit it, so it hovers on the surface.
'सान्द्रा' पद से यह दिखाया गया है कि उस (रति) के भीतर किसी अन्य भाव का प्रवेश सम्भव नहीं; वैसा अन्य भाव केवल बाहर ही रह सकता है, भीतर नहीं।

patnī-bhāvābhimānasya ātmā buddhir yato yasyāṁ vā sā |
patnī-bhāva-abhimānasya ātmā buddhiḥthe 'ātmā' of the wife-identification means its buddhi — its guiding awarenessपत्नी होने के अभिमान का 'आत्मा' अर्थात् बुद्धि
yataḥ yasyāṁ vā sāshe [the rati] from which, or in which, that [awareness] comes two ways to resolve the compound — 'from which' arises, or 'in which' it residesजिस (रति) से वह (बुद्धि) उत्पन्न हो, अथवा जिस (रति) में वह रहे — वह (रति)
patnī-bhāva-abhimānasya ātmā buddhiḥ — 'ātmā' here is buddhi; yataḥ yasyāṁ vā sā — the rati from which, or in which, [that awareness comes].
patnī-bhāva-abhimānasya ātmā buddhiḥ — अभिमान का आत्मा अर्थात् बुद्धि; yataḥ yasyāṁ vā sā — जिससे वह उत्पन्न हो, अथवा जिसमें रहे, वह।
Viśvanātha reads the compound. Take 'ātmā' here to mean buddhi — the awareness, the settled sense. Then 'patnī-bhāvābhimānātmā' is the rati out of which, or within which, the awareness 'I am his wife' comes. He offers both resolutions and will settle one next.
यहाँ 'आत्मा' का अर्थ है बुद्धि। पत्नी होने के अभिमान की बुद्धि जिस रति से उत्पन्न होती है, अथवा जिस रति में वह बुद्धि रहती है — वह (समञ्जसा रति है)।

ātmā yatnaḥ dhṛtiḥ buddhiḥ iti amaraḥ — 'आत्मा (के अर्थ) यत्न, धृति, बुद्धि' — ऐसा अमरकोश।
He backs the gloss from the dictionary. The Amara-kośa lists among the senses of 'ātman': yatna (effort), dhṛti (resolve), and buddhi (intellect). So reading 'ātmā' as buddhi is lexically sound.
अमरकोश में 'आत्मा' शब्द के अर्थ 'यत्न, धृति, बुद्धि' आदि बताए गए हैं।
Why cited: adduced from the Amara-kośa as lexical warrant that ātmā can carry the sense buddhi (intellect/awareness), licensing the gloss just given.

Taking the second of his two options, it means: the rati in which there arises a buddhi tied to the sense 'I am his wedded wife.' That inner awareness is what marks this love.

Or else — a second reading, left standing beside the first. Take 'ātmā' not as buddhi but as the very self, the essence. Then 'patnī-bhāvābhimānātmā' means: she whose whole essence is the wife-identification. On this reading the sense 'I am his wife' is not just an awareness she has, but the core she is made of.
अथवा दूसरा अर्थ — पत्नी होने का अभिमान ही जिसका आत्मा अर्थात् स्वरूप है, वह रति; यहाँ 'आत्मा' बुद्धि नहीं, स्वरूप है (इस प्रकार बहुव्रीहि दूसरी तरह से खुलती है)।

And on that second reading a consequence is clear: if the wife-identification is ever set aside, the love itself has nothing to stand on and falls away. This point, Viśvanātha notes, is what the revered Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī teaches — the abhimāna is not a decoration on the love but its essence.

Why the exact word 'patnī' (wedded wife)? Viśvanātha appeals to grammar. Pāṇini's rule 'patyur yajña-saṁyoge' fixes 'patnī' to mean the wife joined to her husband in Vedic sacrifice. So 'patnī' covers only women married with brahmins and the sacred fire as witnesses — and they alone have samañjasā rati. The Gokula gopīs, joined to Kṛṣṇa only by gāndharva marriage (mutual love, no rite), are thereby fenced out of this definition.
The rule is Pāṇini 4.1.33, 'patyur no yajña-saṁyoge': the feminine 'patnī' is used specifically of a wife associated with her husband in sacrifice, as against ordinary 'patī' for a wife in general. Viśvanātha leans on it to restrict samañjasā rati to the ritually wedded queens.
यह नियम पाणिनि ४.१.३३ 'पत्युर्नो यज्ञसंयोगे' है — 'पत्नी' शब्द विशेष रूप से उस स्त्री के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है जो यज्ञ में अपने पति के साथ जुड़ी हो, जबकि सामान्य स्त्री के लिए 'पती'। विश्वनाथ इसी के बल पर समञ्जसा रति को विधिपूर्वक विवाहित रानियों तक सीमित करते हैं।

There is a difference to mark. In the sādhana-siddhā (those who reach Kṛṣṇa by practice), hearing is the real cause of the love. But in the nitya-siddhā queens — Rukmiṇī and the rest, eternally perfect — the love shows itself purely by nature. For them, hearing of his qualities and beauty is only a slight nudge to what is already there. Viśvanātha grounds this in the comment on 14.32: 'guṇa-rūpa-śrutir manāk' — 'the hearing of qualities and form is [only] a slight [cause].'
साधन-सिद्धा (भक्तों), जिनके लिए श्रवण ही रति का वास्तविक कारण है — उनकी अपेक्षा नित्य-सिद्धा रुक्मिणी आदि में तो वह रति स्वभाव से ही प्रकट होती है। '(उनमें) उसके उद्बोधन का हेतु गुण-रूप का श्रवण थोड़ा-सा ही होता है' — इस वचन की व्याख्या-युक्ति से (यह सिद्ध होता है)।
The quoted words are from u.nī. 14.32; Viśvanātha adduces its explanation to fix that for the ever-perfect queens hearing only lightly rouses a love already innate — the same point as Jīva's 'made manifest, not produced' above.
उद्धृत शब्द उज्ज्वल-नीलमणि १४.३२ के हैं; विश्वनाथ उसकी व्याख्या को इसलिए प्रस्तुत करते हैं ताकि यह निश्चित हो कि नित्य-सिद्धा रानियों में श्रवण तो पहले से विद्यमान प्रेम को थोड़ा-सा ही जगा देता है — यही जीव के 'प्रकट हुई, उत्पन्न नहीं' वाले कथन का भाव है।

kvacit kadācit eva — 'kvacit' = only sometimes; bheditā svataḥ sakāśāt bhinnī-kṛtya sthāpitā sambhoga-tṛṣṇā yayā sā — 'bhedita' = she by whom the thirst for union is split off from herself and set apart.
kvacit kadācit eva — 'क्वचित्' अर्थात् कभी-कभी ही; bheditā svataḥ sakāśāt bhinnī-kṛtya sthāpitā sambhoga-tṛṣṇā yayā sā — जिसके द्वारा तृष्णा अपने से भिन्न कर पृथक् स्थापित की गई हो, वह।
Viśvanātha glosses the two words. 'Kvacit' means only occasionally, not always. 'Bhedita-sambhoga-tṛṣṇā' resolves as: she by whom the thirst for union is, now and then, split off from her own self and made to stand apart. So the rati is one in which that thirst is occasionally separated out.
'क्वचित्' का अर्थ है कभी-कभी ही। 'भेदिता-संभोग-तृष्णा' वह (रति) है जिसमें संभोग की तृष्णा को अपने से भिन्न करके पृथक् रूप में स्थापित किया गया है।

Here is a clean distinction. In sādhāraṇī rati (the common, lowest grade of love), the thirst for union is always separate and out in front. In samañjasā, it separates only occasionally. That gap is exactly what tells the two grades apart.
साधारणी रति में संभोग-तृष्णा सदा ही पृथक् रूप से बनी रहती है, परन्तु समञ्जसा में वह कभी-कभी ही (पृथक् दिखती है) — यही दोनों में अन्तर है।
The chapter ranks three grades of rati: sādhāraṇī (the lowest, e.g. Kubjā's), samañjasā (the queens'), and samarthā (the gopīs'). In the lowest, the appetite for union is nakedly and always to the fore; in samañjasā it surfaces only now and then.
इस अध्याय में रति के तीन स्तर बताए गए हैं — साधारणी (सबसे निम्न, जैसे कुब्जा की), समञ्जसा (रानियों की), और समर्था (गोपियों की)। सबसे निम्न में मिलन की तृष्णा खुले रूप में और सदा ही प्रधान रहती है; समञ्जसा में वह कभी-कभी ही ऊपर आती है।

So this emerges — not stated outright, but by implication, from the earlier reasoning: even samañjasā rati, in one part of itself, becomes the source of a thirst for union that can stand apart. The love is mostly seamless, but a portion of it throws off this separable thirst.

Why call the whole samañjasā love 'dense,' when only the natural part is dense on its own? Because the natural love is dense, the second, union-born love catches its density too. This runs by a settled maxim — 'tat-sāhityāt tāddharmyam': through close association a thing takes on the quality of what it keeps company with. Joined to the dense natural love, the lesser love turns dense as well.
क्योंकि स्वभाव से उठी (पहली) रति सघन है, इसलिए दूसरी (संभोग-तृष्णा से जन्य) रति में भी सघनता आ जाती है; क्योंकि 'उसके साहचर्य से तद्धर्मता (उसका गुण) आ जाती है' — यह न्याय है।
