An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of autsukya, 'eagerness', the transient emotion opened at 13.86; quoted from the Haṁsadūta (36). It illustrates the first kind — the longing to see the beloved (iṣṭa-īkṣā-spṛhā) named in the lakṣaṇa line 'tad-iṣṭekṣā-spṛhayā'.

The setting: Kṛṣṇa has entered Mathurā. A townswoman, being dressed by her friend, says the following to her. And 'asavya' here just means 'the right' [foot].
श्रीकृष्ण के मथुरा में प्रवेश कर जाने पर कोई एक नगर-स्त्री अपनी शृंगार करती हुई सखी से यह (श्लोक) कहती है। 'असव्य' का अर्थ है दायाँ।

Why does she call the friend 'silly'? The sense: 'I can dress up any day; but a sight of Kṛṣṇa is the rarest thing there is — and that you just don't understand.'
'मुग्धे' पद का आशय — आभूषण पहनना तो मेरे लिए सदा उपलब्ध है ही, परन्तु श्रीकृष्ण का दर्शन परम दुर्लभ है; यह तू नहीं समझती — ऐसा भाव है।

The friend objects: 'But he's still far away, only now approaching — why are you in such a flutter?' In answer she speaks the line beginning 'amandāt'.
(सखी शंका करती है) 'अरे, कृष्ण तो अभी दूर ही आ रहे हैं, तू इतनी व्याकुल क्यों हो रही है?' — इसके उत्तर में (नायिका) 'अमन्दात्' इत्यादि कहती है।

आज मुझे अपने पातिव्रत्य को जलांजलि (मृतक की भाँति विदाई-जल) देनी है — यह इसका ध्वन्यर्थ है; अर्थात् आज मैं अपना सतीत्व त्याग रही हूँ।

kusumadhanveti pada-vyañjitayā iṣṭāpti-spṛhayā dvitīyautsukyaṁ tu nāsyāḥ prāyaḥ saphalam iti na tad udāhṛtam ||
kusuma-dhanvā iti pada-vyañjitayā iṣṭa-āpti-spṛhayāthe longing to attain the beloved — suggested by the word 'kusuma-dhanvā' (Cupid) the second spṛhā rides in on the flower-arrow word'कुसुम-धन्वा' पद से व्यंजित इष्ट-प्राप्ति की स्पृहा से (दूसरी स्पृहा इसी पुष्पबाण-शब्द के सहारे आती है)
dvitīyaṁ autsukyaṁ tuthe second kind of autsukya, on the other hand tu sets it off against the firstपरन्तु दूसरा औत्सुक्य (तु — इसे पहले से भिन्न दिखाने के लिए)
na asyāḥ prāyaḥ saphalamis for her mostly not going to bear fruitइस (नायिका) के लिए प्रायः सफल नहीं होता
iti na tad udāhṛtamand so that second kind is not the one illustratedइसलिए वह उदाहरण रूप में नहीं दिया गया
kusuma-dhanvā iti pada-vyañjitayā iṣṭa-āpti-spṛhayā — by the longing-to-attain suggested by the word 'Cupid'; dvitīyaṁ autsukyaṁ tu — the second autsukya, however; asyāḥ prāyaḥ na saphalam — for her is mostly fruitless; iti na tad udāhṛtam — so that is not illustrated.

There is also a second autsukya — the longing actually to win Kṛṣṇa — hinted by the Cupid-word 'kusuma-dhanvā'. But for her that one is, as a rule, not going to succeed; so the verse is not offered to illustrate it.
'कुसुम-धन्वा' पद से व्यंजित इष्ट-प्राप्ति की स्पृहा से जो दूसरा औत्सुक्य होता है, वह इस (नायिका) के लिए प्रायः सफल नहीं होता, इसलिए उसे उदाहरण रूप में नहीं दिया गया।
