हे पुत्री! धन कमाने के विषय में तुम किसी न किसी तरह भाग्यवश निपुण हो।
An udāharaṇa of vrīḍā (bashfulness), here arising akāryeṇa — 'from an improper deed' (the lead-in akāryeṇa, yathā, UN 13.61): Mālatī has carried off Kṛṣṇa's jewel-necklace, and hangs her head in shame when reproached for it.
यह व्रीडा (लज्जा) का एक उदाहरण है, जो यहाँ अकार्य से — अर्थात् अनुचित कर्म से — उत्पन्न होती है (भूमिका-वाक्य 'अकार्येण, यथा', उ.नी. 13.61): मालती कृष्ण का अनुपम रत्नहार उठा ले गई है, और उस पर उलाहना मिलने पर लज्जावश सिर झुका लेती है।

sva-pratipakṣa-nāyikayā preṣitāyā — by a woman sent by the rival heroine; mālatī-mātāmahī-veśa-dhāriṇyā — wearing the disguise of Mālatī's grandmother; mālatīṁ prati — at Mālatī; upahāsa-vacanam — words of mockery.
sva-pratipakṣa-nāyikayā preṣitāyā — अपनी प्रतिपक्षिणी नायिका द्वारा भेजी गई; mālatī-mātāmahī-veśa-dhāriṇyā — मालती की नानी का वेश धरने वाली; mālatīṁ prati — मालती के प्रति; upahāsa-vacanam — उपहास के वचन
So Jīva sets the scene: these mocking words are spoken at Mālatī by a woman whom the rival heroine has sent, dressed up as Mālatī's own grandmother. The 'elder,' on his reading, is a plant — not the real grandmother.
यह मालती की प्रतिपक्षिणी नायिका द्वारा भेजी गई, मालती की नानी का वेश धारण करने वाली स्त्री के, मालती के प्रति कहे गए उपहास-वचन हैं।

asīty asya viśeṣaṇaṁ guru-janād iti ca gauṇyā vṛttyā tat-sadṛśād ity eva jñeyam ||
asi iti asya viśeṣaṇaṁ['kim api'] is a qualifier of the word 'asi' (you are) — 'somehow you are'यह 'असि' (हो) क्रिया का विशेषण है
guru-janād iti caand the word 'guru-janāt' ('from the elder')और 'गुरुजनात्' यह पद भी
gauṇyā vṛttyātaken by its secondary, figurative sense (gauṇī-vṛtti) instrumental of means: 'by figurative usage'गौणी वृत्ति के द्वारा
tat-sadṛśād iti eva jñeyamis to be understood only as 'from one who resembles her' — not the true elder'उसके सदृश से' — ऐसा ही समझना चाहिए
['kim api'] asi iti asya viśeṣaṇam — 'kim api' qualifies 'asi'; guru-janāt iti ca — and 'guru-janāt'; gauṇyā vṛttyā — by figurative usage; tat-sadṛśāt iti eva jñeyam — is to be understood only as 'from one like [an elder].'
asi iti asya viśeṣaṇaṁ — 'असि' का विशेषण; guru-janād iti ca — और 'गुरुजनात्' पद; gauṇyā vṛttyā — गौणी वृत्ति से; tat-sadṛśād iti eva jñeyam — 'तत्सदृश से' ऐसा ही जानना चाहिए
Two grammatical notes from Jīva. First, 'kim api' qualifies 'asi' — read it as 'somehow you are [clever].' Second, since the speaker is only a disguised stand-in, the word 'guru-janāt,' 'from the elder,' must be taken figuratively (gauṇī-vṛtti) as 'from one who merely resembles an elder.'
'किमपि' 'असि' (हो) क्रिया का विशेषण है; और 'गुरुजनात्' पद को गौणी वृत्ति से 'गुरुजन के सदृश (व्यक्ति) से' — ऐसा ही समझना चाहिए।
gauṇī-vṛtti: a word's secondary use by resemblance — as gaṅgāyāṁ ghoṣaḥ, 'a hamlet on the Ganges,' means on its bank, not in the water. Here 'elder' is applied to one who only looks the part.
गौणी वृत्ति — सादृश्य के कारण शब्द का गौण (लाक्षणिक) प्रयोग; जैसे 'गंगायां घोषः' — 'गंगा में गाँव' का तात्पर्य जल में नहीं, अपितु गंगा-तट पर बसे गाँव से होता है। यहाँ 'गुरुजन' शब्द उस पर लगाया गया है जो केवल गुरुजन-सा दिखता है (वास्तव में गुरुजन नहीं)।

guru-janātthe verse's 'from the elder'गुरुजन से
sva-mātāmahyāḥmeans: from her own maternal grandmother ablative, glossing guru-janātअपनी नानी से (यह 'गुरुजनात्' का अर्थ है)
mālatyāḥ kāñcit sakhī — some friend of Mālatī; āha — speaks this; guru-janāt — 'from the elder'; sva-mātāmahyāḥ — [means] from her own grandmother.
mālatyāḥ sakhī kāñcit — मालती की कोई सखी; āha — कहती है; guru-janāt — गुरुजन से; sva-mātāmahyāḥ — अपनी नानी से
Viśvanātha assigns the verse to a speaker — 'some friend of Mālatī says it' — and glosses 'from the elder' plainly as 'from her own maternal grandmother.'
मालती की कोई सखी यह कहती है — 'गुरुजनात्' का अर्थ है 'अपनी नानी से'।
Viśvanātha reads guru-jana literally, as the real grandmother; contrast Jīva just above, who takes it figuratively as a rival's disguised agent. The editions let both readings stand.
विश्वनाथ 'गुरुजन' को मुख्यार्थ में लेते हैं — वास्तविक नानी; इसके विपरीत ऊपर जीव इसे लाक्षणिक अर्थ में, प्रतिपक्षिणी की वेशधारिणी दूती के रूप में लेते हैं। संस्करण दोनों पाठों को यथावत् रहने देते हैं।
