Some gopīs are relishing the pastime of Kṛṣṇa coming home to Vraja in the afternoon with the cows and cowherd boys. They have thrown away shyness, composure, and family-duty — as good as offering them a funeral farewell. Swooning with remorse — 'Why didn't we too become his companions, the way Subala and the others did?' — in between their singing they say to one another this verse, 'nija...'.
