L1definition
śaṅkā tu pravara-strīṇāṁ bhīrutvād bhaya-kṛd bhavet ||
śaṅkā tuapprehension, for its part — the item now being defined tu marks the topic-shift to śaṅkā as the emotion under discussionपरन्तु शंका (यहाँ विवेच्य भाव)
pravara-strīṇāmin the case of the most refined womenश्रेष्ठ नायिकाओं की
bhīrutvātbecause they are timid by nature ablative of cause: the timidity is what makes śaṅkā tip into fearभीरुता (स्वभावगत डर) के कारण
bhaya-kṛd bhavetcomes to produce fear (bhaya-kṛt = fear-making; bhavet, would be)भय को उत्पन्न करने वाली हो जाती है
śaṅkā tu — apprehension, for its part; pravara-strīṇām — for the most refined women; bhīrutvāt — because they are timid by nature; bhaya-kṛt bhavet — turns into a producer of fear.
Apprehension (śaṅkā), in the case of the finest women, turns into a producer of fear — and that is because such women are timid by nature.

Once my secret episode of love-play has come out into the open —
The opening line of an udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, L2–L5) of śaṅkā, the apprehension defined in the previous line (13.32). It is spoken by Kṛṣṇa in his own voice ('my secret tryst'); Viśvanātha (s9) frames it as Kṛṣṇa's remorseful words, uttered when he does not know that it is Subala in Rādhā's dress whom Jaṭilā has led away.

Jīva's answer: apprehension never once separates itself from fear — and for the finest women all the more. So to illustrate śaṅkā is already to illustrate the fear bound up with it.

Hence the very worry: 'Given all this danger, how is that love-play even to be carried on?' — that anxious thought is śaṅkā turning into fear.

Viśvanātha: here what triggers the apprehension (śaṅkā) is an offense — specifically, overstepping one's own family's code of conduct. And the fear that serves as the stable emotion (sthāyī) of the terror-rasa (bhayānaka) has the very same trigger, an offense. So apprehension and fear share one cause.

As the standard definition runs: 'Fear is the mind's extreme agitation, brought on by an offense (mantu), by terrifying glances, and the like.'
Why cited: Cited to supply the received definition of bhaya and, above all, to list mantu (offense) among its causes — grounding Viśvanātha's claim that a single offense triggers both śaṅkā and fear.
mantu — a fault or offense; here the near-synonym of aparādha that the quoted definition names among the causes of fear.

sthāyitvamit counts as the stable emotion (sthāyī)उसका स्थायीपन (स्थायी भाव होना)
asāndratvewhen it is not dense — thinजब वह गाढ़ा न हो
śaṅkā-abhidhānatayāsince it is then called 'śaṅkā' instrumental: because it goes by the name apprehensionक्योंकि तब वह 'शंका' नाम से पुकारा जाता है

tasmāt — therefore; bhayasya sāndratve — when fear is dense; sthāyitvam — it is the stable emotion; asāndratve — when it is thin; śaṅkā-abhidhānatayā — under the name śaṅkā; vyabhicāritvam — it is a transient; iti bhedaḥ kalpyaḥ — this is the distinction to assume.
So the rule to assume is this: when fear is dense, it counts as the stable emotion (sthāyī); when it is thin, it goes by the name śaṅkā and counts as a transient (vyabhicārī). It is one and the same fear — density alone makes the difference.
