bhayād, yathā—
ghana-stanita-cakreṇa cakiteyaṁ ghana-stanī |
babhūva harim āliṅgya niścalāṅgī vrajāṅganā ||
The verse — decoded
L1example
ghana-stanita-cakreṇa cakiteyaṁ ghana-stanī |
ghana-stanita-cakreṇabecause of the volley of the cloud's thunder-claps — this is what jolts her instrumental of cause; ghana = cloud (megha), stanita = thundering, cakra = a whole mass/volley of themमेघों की गड़गड़ाहट के समूह के कारण
cakitā iyaṁshe is startled — this woman right here cakitā = frightened, jolted; iyaṁ = 'this one' (nom.), pointing at the heroineयह (नायिका) चकित होकर, भयभीत होकर
ghana-stanīthe full-breasted one (ghana = full/dense, stanī = breasted) — describing her hear the echo: ghana ('cloud') in the thunder-word chimes against ghana ('full/dense') here — a deliberate sound-play (yamaka), 'cloud-thunder' against 'cloud-thick breasts'घने (भरे-पूरे) स्तनों वाली — जहाँ 'घन' (मेघ) का ध्वनि-प्रतिध्वनि 'घन' (सघन) से टकराती है
ghana-stanita-cakreṇa — because of the volley of the cloud's thunder; cakitā — startled; iyaṁ ghana-stanī — is this full-breasted woman.
The cloud's thunder rolls out in volley after volley, and this full-breasted woman is startled by it. Catch the poet's echo: ghana-stanita, 'cloud-thunder,' rings against ghana-stanī, 'full-breasted' — ghana chimed against ghana in the very same line.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of a sāttvika-bhāva arising from bhaya (fear) — the cause flagged by the unit's lead-in 'bhayāt,' one of the triggers of sāttvika-bhāva set out at the head of this prakaraṇa. The sāttvika illustrated is stambha, being stunned motionless (see niścalāṅgī in L2).
L2example
babhūva harim āliṅgya niścalāṅgī vrajāṅganā ||
babhūvashe became — the main verb the whole line hangs onहो गई
harim āliṅgyahaving first thrown her arms around Hari (Kṛṣṇa) gerund: the embrace comes first, then the freezingहरि (कृष्ण) का आलिंगन करके
niścalāṅgīher limbs gone still — motionless-limbed; this stiffening is the sāttvika stambha niścala-aṅgī, bahuvrīhi: 'she whose limbs are motionless'जिसके अंग निश्चल (स्तब्ध) हो गए, ऐसी
vrajāṅganāthe vraja-woman (the gopī) — the one it all happens toवह व्रजांगना (व्रज की नायिका)
iyaṁ vrajāṅganā — this vraja-woman; harim āliṅgya — having embraced Hari; niścalāṅgī babhūva — became motionless-limbed.
She threw her arms around Hari and went rigid — her limbs frozen still. That freezing is the sāttvika at work: the fright drove her into his embrace and then locked her body motionless.

bhayād yatheti |
bhayād yathā itihe takes up the lead-in 'from fear, as follows' — the heading this verse answers to'भय से, जैसे' — यह (मूल का प्रतीक लेकर)
bhayāt — from fear; yathā — as follows; iti — [so runs the section-heading he is glossing].
He picks up the section-heading, 'from fear, for example.' The verse to come is his illustration of a sāttvika that fear brings on.

trāsaḥmeans trāsa — sudden fright, the jolt of terrorत्रास (सहसा उठनेवाला डर) है
atra — here; bhayaṁ — the word 'bhaya'; trāsaḥ — is trāsa, a sudden fright.
Here 'bhaya' means trāsa — the sudden jolt of fright, the momentary shock, not a slow-building dread.

digdho’yam iti |
digdhaḥ ayam itihe flags the label 'this one is digdha' — 'smeared, tinged [with rati]' — as the point needing explaining'यह (सात्त्विक) दिग्ध (रति से रंजित) है' — यह (पद)
ayaṁ digdhaḥ — this [sāttvika] is 'digdha,' tinged; iti — [so runs the term he now takes up].
Now he raises the term 'digdha' — 'smeared, tinged.' The sāttvika here is a 'tinged' one. But in what sense? For that, he sends us back to an earlier passage.

For this, look back to the earlier passage, where it was said: apart from the two ratis, there are emotions that arise and seize the mind by force…
Why cited: Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.3.9, adduced to fix the sense of 'digdha' — that emotions lying outside the two ratis, once they seize the mind of a person who already bears rati, can still count as tinged with rati; so the sāttvika born of fear qualifies.

And the 'two ratis' named there work out like this: the primary rati (mukhyā) is śānta and the rest — the main love-moods; the secondary rati (gauṇī) is hāsa and the rest — the laughter-group. The fright in our verse belongs to neither as a sthāyin, which is exactly why the 'digdha' rule was needed to let its sāttvika count.
mukhyā rati and gauṇī rati are the two families of sthāyi-bhāva in rasa theory. The mukhyā ('śānti and the rest') are the five primary moods built directly on love: śānta, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya, madhura. The gauṇī ('hāsa and the rest') are the seven secondary moods: hāsya, adbhuta, vīra, karuṇa, raudra, bhayānaka, bībhatsa. Together they are 'the two ratis.'

atra rati-dvayaṁ ca — and the two ratis here; śānty-ādiḥ mukhyā — the primary is śānta and the rest; hāsa-ādiḥ gauṇī — the secondary is hāsa and the rest; iti — so it goes.

And the 'two ratis' here: the primary rati (mukhyā) is śānta and the rest; the secondary rati (gauṇī) is hāsa and the rest. Fear as a passing fright falls outside both, and so its sāttvika belongs only by the 'digdha' rule.
