Pālikā speaks to Kṛṣṇa. 'A cruel vow has struck me down, so today I cannot put this lovely garland of yours around my neck.' She lays the blame on a vow, not on her own anger.

The poet closes the scene. Even as Hari kept pleading with her, Pālikā drove her anger (manyu) deep down instead of letting it show. That burying of the anger is exactly the dhīrā's self-covering.

Now Rūpa illustrates the dhīra-pragalbhā. Jīva says two things stand out plainly in 'kaṇṭhe nādya...': her composure (dhīrā), by which she keeps her anger covered, and her boldness (pragalbhā).

Where does the boldness show? In the biting epithets she flings — 'cruel vow,' 'harsh [brāhmaṇas],' 'wicked [mother-in-law].' These are prauḍhokti, bold speech. And they work by upalakṣaṇa: the three she names point beyond themselves, so that others too fall under her scolding. From all this her pragalbhā-ness is to be gathered.

upalakṣaṇa = an indicative mark that names one thing only to point at more than itself — like 'the house with the crow on it,' where the crow is not part of the house but just helps you pick it out. Here the three named targets (the vow, the brāhmaṇas, the mother-in-law) point beyond themselves, so her boldness is understood to spare no one.

'Because that vow is in force, I don't even get to wear the garland your own hand made.' Two dhīrā marks sit in that one line: ādara — she prizes his hand-made garland, so she still honors him; and avahitthā — she blames the vow, covering the real reason, her anger.
ādara (courtesy, regard toward the beloved) and avahitthā (hiding one's true feeling) are the two defining marks of the dhīrā's self-covering; Viśvanātha finds both packed into this single line.

Note the tu ('but'): she is speaking at all only because she loves him. Silence is forbidden to her, yet for a moment she breaks it — and breaks it out of deference to her love for Kṛṣṇa. That is the intended sense of the line.

Viśvanātha's verdict: she does not really want to give him union, and she is hiding her own māna, so she turns the vow and the rest into a pretext. Because she has to lean on these props, her composure (dhairya) is not complete. So this heroine is a dhīra-pragalbhā of the lesser grade — the 'yathā vā,' the alternative, second type.
This picks up the grading set in 5.52–53: full dhairya needs no pretext, whereas here the props betray dhairya-pūrty-abhāva, so she is only dhīra-pragalbhā-prāya, short of the complete type. Viśvanātha reads this verse as that second, incompletely-composed grade — matching the 'yathā vā' lead-in.
