By how her māna — her proud, jealous sulking — breaks out, this middling (madhyā) heroine falls into three kinds: the composed one (dhīrā), the un-composed one (adhīrā), and the one who is both at once (dhīrādhīrā).

tatra dhīra-madhyāṁ vaktuṁ madhyāyā lakṣitatvān madhyā-mātraṁ lakṣayati dhīrā tv iti ||
tatraat this pointवहाँ (इस प्रसंग में)
dhīra-madhyāṁ vaktumin order to speak of the dhīra-madhyā (the composed middling heroine)धीरा-मध्या का वर्णन करने के लिए
madhyāyāḥ lakṣitatvātsince the madhyā has already been defined [earlier] ablative of reason; -tva abstract, 'because of her having-been-characterized'क्योंकि मध्या का लक्षण (पहले ही) किया जा चुका है
madhyā-mātraṁ lakṣayatihe is characterizing the madhyā and only the madhyā [here]केवल मध्या का ही लक्षण करते हैं
dhīrā tu itiwith the words 'dhīrā tu…' pratīka — quoting the verse by its opening words'धीरा तु' इस (पद) से (कहते हुए)
tatra — here; dhīra-madhyāṁ vaktum — to speak of the dhīra-madhyā; madhyāyāḥ lakṣitatvāt — since the madhyā is already defined; dhīrā tu iti — with 'dhīrā tu…'; madhyā-mātraṁ lakṣayati — he characterizes the madhyā alone.
इस प्रसंग में धीरा-मध्या का वर्णन करने के लिए — क्योंकि मध्या का लक्षण पहले हो चुका है — 'धीरा तु' इत्यादि से केवल मध्या का ही लक्षण करते हैं।
Here, to describe the dhīra-madhyā, Rūpa is defining the madhyā and nothing but the madhyā. The madhyā as such has already been characterized earlier, so the bare word 'dhīrā' in 'dhīrā tu vakti' is to be read as her — the madhyā's composed form — not as dhīrā in general. That is the point of the phrase 'dhīrā tu…'.
यहाँ धीरा-मध्या का वर्णन करना है। मध्या का लक्षण तो पहले ही हो चुका है। इसलिए 'धीरा तु' कहकर केवल मध्या का ही लक्षण किया जा रहा है।

madhyā-ādeḥ anuvṛttyā eva prāptatvātbecause 'madhyā' is already supplied on its own by continuation from the running context ablative of reason; anuvṛtti = a word carried over from earlier without being repeatedक्योंकि 'मध्या' आदि तो अनुवृत्ति से ही (पहले पद के खिंचे चले आने से ही) प्राप्त हो जाते हैं
māna-vṛtteḥ — the word māna-vṛtteḥ; māna-vṛttiṁ prāpya — [means] once her māna sets in; tatra dhīrā iti evam eva vaktavye api — though it would then suffice to say just 'dhīrā'; dhīra-madhyā atha adhīra-madhyā iti ādiṣu — in 'dhīra-madhyā,' 'adhīra-madhyā,' etc.; madhyā-ādi-pada-upanyāsaḥ — the adding of the word 'madhyā'; sukha-bodhana-arthaḥ — is for easy understanding; madhyā-ādeḥ anuvṛttyā eva prāptatvāt — since 'madhyā' is already carried over by continuation.
'मान-वृत्तेः' अर्थात् मान की वृत्ति को प्राप्त करके। वहाँ केवल 'धीरा' ऐसा कहना ही पर्याप्त था, फिर भी 'धीरा-मध्या', 'अब अधीरा-मध्या' इत्यादि में 'मध्या' आदि पद का उल्लेख सरलता से बोध कराने के लिए है — क्योंकि 'मध्या' आदि तो अनुवृत्ति से ही प्राप्त हो जाते हैं।
The verse's 'māna-vṛtteḥ' is to be read as 'once her māna comes into play.' At that point it would have been enough for Rūpa to say just 'dhīrā.' Yet in the running labels — 'dhīra-madhyā,' then 'adhīra-madhyā,' and so on — he still tacks on the word 'madhyā.' That is only to make things easy to follow: 'madhyā' is already present by anuvṛtti, carried over on its own from the context, so repeating it adds nothing but clarity.
'मान-वृत्तेः' का अर्थ है — मान की वृत्ति को प्राप्त करके। यहाँ तो केवल 'धीरा' कहना ही काफ़ी था। फिर भी 'धीरा-मध्या', 'अधीरा-मध्या' आदि में 'मध्या' शब्द जोड़ा गया है। यह केवल सरलता से समझाने के लिए है। 'मध्या' शब्द तो पहले से अनुवृत्ति द्वारा चला ही आ रहा है।
anuvṛtti is the standard grammatical/Mīmāṁsā device by which a word stated once is understood to continue into later clauses where it is not repeated. Viśvanātha and Jīva agree: the bare 'dhīrā' is the dhīrā of the madhyā, the 'madhyā' being supplied this way.
अनुवृत्ति = पहले कहा गया कोई पद, जो बिना दोहराए आगे के वाक्यों में खिंचा चला आता है।

sotprāsam utkarṣeṇotkarṣa-kathanenaiva prāsyate tiraskiryate’nenety utprāsaḥ solluṇṭha-hāsas tad-viśiṣṭaṁ yathā syāt tathā ||
sotprāsamthe verse's 'sotprāsam' [break down its core, utprāsa] lemma being defined by nirukti'सोत्प्रासम्' (पद की व्युत्पत्ति)
utkarṣeṇa utkarṣa-kathanena evaby exalting him — by the very speaking of his 'excellence' instrumental of meansउत्कर्ष के द्वारा, अर्थात् (बनावटी) श्रेष्ठता के कथन के द्वारा ही
prāsyate tiraskriyate anena iti'by this he is prāsyate — thrown down, put to scorn'; hence the name'इसके द्वारा प्रास्यते अर्थात् तिरस्कार किया जाता है' — इस (व्युत्पत्ति) से
utprāsaḥthe word utprāsa (mockery, derision)'उत्प्रास' (शब्द सिद्ध होता है)
solluṇṭha-hāsaḥ[which is] a jeering, taunting laughजो व्यंग्य भरी हँसी (कटाक्ष-हास) है
tad-viśiṣṭaṁ yathā syāt tathāso 'sa-utprāsam' [as adverb] means: in such a way that [her speech] carries that [mockery]उस (उत्प्रास) से युक्त जैसे हो, वैसे
sotprāsam — the word sotprāsam; utkarṣeṇa utkarṣa-kathanena eva — by exalting him, by the very praise of his 'excellence'; anena prāsyate tiraskriyate iti — 'by it he is thrown down, scorned'; utprāsaḥ — hence 'utprāsa'; solluṇṭha-hāsaḥ — a taunting laugh; tad-viśiṣṭaṁ yathā syāt tathā — [sotprāsam:] so that her speech is marked by it.
'सोत्प्रासम्' — उत्कर्ष के द्वारा, अर्थात् (बनावटी) श्रेष्ठता के कथन के द्वारा ही जिससे 'प्रास्यते' अर्थात् तिरस्कार किया जाता है, वह 'उत्प्रास' कहलाता है — अर्थात् व्यंग्य भरी हँसी (कटाक्ष-हास); उससे युक्त जैसे हो, वैसे (बोलना ही 'सोत्प्रासम्' है)।
Now 'sotprāsam.' Take apart its core word utprāsa: by exalting him — by the very act of praising his 'greatness' — he is 'prāsyate,' thrown down, put in his place, 'by this.' That derivation is why it is called utprāsa. It names a solluṇṭha-hāsa — a taunting, jeering laugh. So 'sotprāsam' on 'she speaks' means: she talks in such a way that her words carry exactly that mockery.
'सोत्प्रासम्' की व्युत्पत्ति इस प्रकार है। किसी की (बनावटी) श्रेष्ठता बखानकर ही उसका तिरस्कार किया जाता है — 'प्रास्यते' का यही अर्थ है। इसी से 'उत्प्रास' शब्द बनता है, जो व्यंग्य भरी हँसी (कटाक्ष) है। उस उत्प्रास से युक्त होकर बोलना ही 'सोत्प्रासम्' है।
A nirukti: utprāsa is derived from ut + √as ('to throw'), the mockery that 'throws down' its target. The rasika mechanism is the point — her sarcasm works by over-praising him to his face precisely in order to cut him down.
