यौवन-रूपी सूर्य की विजय का जो यह आरम्भ सामने प्रकट हो रहा है।
Because this — the victorious rising of the sun of youth — is breaking out right in front of you. It is the dawn: the sun of young-womanhood is on the attack, spreading its light ahead. (The orphan s- at the start belongs to uraḥ, 'chest', which links up with 'eastern mountain' in the next line.)
देखो, यौवन-रूपी सूर्य की विजय का यह आरम्भ सामने फैल रहा है।
आरम्भिक 's' पिछले पाद के 'उरः' (वक्ष) का बचा हुआ अंश है, जो L2 में 'पूर्वाद्रि' के साथ जुड़ता है।

Look now! On the eastern mountain — her chest — the splendor is swelling and rising. On the lotus of her face a first smile is budding. Both readings run at once: at dawn the peak brightens and the lotus opens; on Rādhā the chest lifts and the face breaks into its first smile. The signs of youth are here today.
वक्षःस्थल-रूपी उदयाचल पर कान्ति की उन्नति है; आज मुख-कमल पर इस मंद मुस्कान की रेखा को देखो।

tārāyām akṣṇoḥ kanīnikāyāṁ, pakṣe nakṣatre rucir abhilāṣaḥ, pakṣe kāntiḥ ||
tārāyāmon the word 'tārā' in the verse —'तारा' शब्द के विषय में
akṣṇoḥ kanīnikāyāmit means the pupil of the two eyesनेत्रों की पुतली (कनीनिका) के अर्थ में
pakṣe nakṣatreon the other reading, a starदूसरे पक्ष में नक्षत्र के अर्थ में
ruciḥ abhilāṣaḥ'ruci' means longing (for Kṛṣṇa)'रुचि' का अर्थ अभिलाषा (इच्छा)
pakṣe kāntiḥon the other reading, luster (of the sky)दूसरे पक्ष में कान्ति के अर्थ में
tārāyām — for the word tārā; kanīnikāyām — the eye's pupil; pakṣe nakṣatre — on the alternate reading, a star; ruciḥ abhilāṣaḥ — ruci means longing; pakṣe kāntiḥ — on the alternate reading, luster.
'तारा' का अर्थ नेत्रों की पुतली, अन्य पक्ष में नक्षत्र; 'रुचि' का अर्थ अभिलाषा, अन्य पक्ष में कान्ति।
Jīva leads with the Rādhā-layer as primary: 'tārā' is the pupil of her eyes, and 'ruci' is her longing for Kṛṣṇa. Only secondarily (pakṣe) does he give the dawn-layer — 'tārā' the star, 'ruci' the sky's luster. Note he puts the pupil and the longing first, the reverse of Viśvanātha's order below. The two commentators are left as they stand.
'तारा' शब्द का एक अर्थ है आँख की पुतली, दूसरे पक्ष में नक्षत्र; और 'रुचि' का एक अर्थ है अभिलाषा, दूसरे पक्ष में कान्ति।
śleṣa (double meaning): the one word tārā carries both 'pupil' and 'star', and ruci both 'longing' and 'luster'. Jīva ranks the erotic reading first.

We are in the section that defines the mugdhā, the naive young heroine. To illustrate her — and, astonishingly, to give even Rādhā herself as the specimen — Rūpa says 'yathā vā.' The 'even' is the whole point: the queen of Vṛndāvana is offered as an example of the innocent girl.
मुग्धा के लक्षण में राधा को भी उदाहरण के रूप में प्रस्तुत करने के लिए 'यथा वा' यह श्लोक कहा।

The speaker is a girlfriend, and she is teasing. In the verse beginning 'bālya…' she portrays Rādhā — playfully treating her as 'the dark one,' because childhood is about to be figured as darkness. The whole speech is a friend's tease.
कोई सखी हँसी करती हुई साँवली राधा का वर्णन करती है — 'बाल्य' इत्यादि पदों से।
śyāmalā ('dark') primes the metaphor of the next sentence: childhood = darkness (dhvānta). Rādhā is 'dark' only in the sense of being still wrapped in the night of childhood.

Take the analogy. When pots and cloths sit in a dark room, the darkness tells you only one thing — that you cannot see them. That is the whole force of 'darkness': non-perception, nothing more.
जैसे अन्धकार में रखे घड़े, कपड़े आदि का केवल न दिखना बताया जाता है।
dṛṣṭānta (analogy): darkness = childhood; the pots and cloths = Rādhā's love-equipment; not-being-seen = its going unnoticed. It proves that being hidden is not being absent.

uraḥ-pūrvādrau itithe phrase 'uraḥ-pūrvādrau' — 'on the chest-eastern-mountain' — now taken up confirms that uraḥ ('chest') joins pūrvādri (sunrise-mountain), though split across the verse'उरः-पूर्वाद्रौ' यह (पद)
uraḥ-pūrvādrau iti — [he picks up] 'on the chest-that-is-the-eastern-mountain'.
'उरः-पूर्वाद्रि' (वक्षःस्थल-रूपी पूर्व-पर्वत) — यह पद।
He now takes up the phrase 'uraḥ-pūrvādrau' — her chest read as the eastern mountain of sunrise. This is where that stray 'uraḥ' from the earlier line finally lands.
'उरः-पूर्वाद्रौ' यह पद — अर्थात् वक्षःस्थल ही पूर्व-पर्वत (उदयाचल) है।
'उरः' (वक्ष) पिछले पाद से यहाँ 'पूर्वाद्रि' के साथ जुड़ता है, यद्यपि श्लोक में टूटकर आया है।

urasaḥ eva tuṅgatvāt — because the chest itself is lofty; adritvam — its being a mountain.
वक्षःस्थल के ही उन्नत होने के कारण उसमें पर्वतत्व है।
Why call it a mountain? Because the chest itself is the high, raised part — so it earns the name 'mountain' (adri).
वक्षःस्थल ही ऊँचा है, इसी कारण उसे पर्वत कहा गया।

उस समय स्तनों में वैसे (उन्नत) होने के अभाव के कारण (वक्ष ही पर्वत है) — ऐसा जानना चाहिए।
Understand why it is the chest and not the breasts: at this stage youth has barely begun, so the breasts have no such height yet. The prominence is still in the chest, which is why the poet made the chest the mountain.
उस समय स्तनों में वैसी उन्नति नहीं थी, इसीलिए वक्षःस्थल को ही पर्वत कहा — ऐसा समझना चाहिए।

pakṣe — on the alternate reading; suṣamayā saha unnatiḥ — a rise together with beauty; uccatvam — i.e. loftiness.

On the Rādhā-layer the compound splits differently: 'unnati along with suṣamā' — a rising-up that comes with beauty, that is, the chest lifting, lovely as it rises. This second reading is set beside the first, not chosen over it — the śleṣa holds both: dawn-splendor on the peak, and the first swell of her figure.
दूसरे पक्ष में 'सुषमा' को अलग शब्द मानकर — कान्ति के साथ उन्नति, अर्थात् ऊँचाई।
The śleṣa even re-cuts the compound: suṣamā-unnati as 'excess of ray-splendor' (dawn) vs suṣamayā saha unnati, 'a rise together with beauty' (Rādhā).
यहाँ श्लेष है — इस पक्ष में 'सुषमा' अलग पद है, जो 'उन्नति' के साथ जुड़ता है।
