L1conclusion
sāmānyāyā rasābhāsa-prasaṅgāt tādṛg apy asau |
sāmānyāyāḥif [she were] a sāmānyā (a common, shared woman) genitive — the type being weighedसामान्या (साधारण स्त्री) की
rasābhāsa-prasaṅgātbecause that would land us in rasābhāsa (a false semblance of rasa) ablative of reasonक्योंकि (उसे सामान्या मानने पर) रसाभास का प्रसंग आ जाता है
tādṛk apithough she does look like one (such) api = 'though, even so'वैसी (सामान्या-सी) होते हुए भी
asaushe [the sairindhrī, Kubjā]यह (सैरन्ध्री)
asau — she; tādṛk api — though she looks like such a one; sāmānyāyāḥ — [to call her] a common woman; rasābhāsa-prasaṅgāt — [is barred] because it would bring on rasābhāsa.
सामान्या (साधारण स्त्री) मानने पर रसाभास का प्रसंग आ जाने के कारण, यह (सैरन्ध्री) वैसी होते हुए भी (सामान्या नहीं)।
She [Kubjā] does look like a common woman. But to actually class her as one would bring on rasābhāsa — a false, off-key semblance of rasa. So that label is ruled out.
उसे साधारण स्त्री मानने पर रसाभास का दोष आ जाता है, इसलिए यह सैरन्ध्री वैसी दिखने पर भी सामान्या नहीं है।
rasābhāsa: a distorted or mismatched semblance of true rasa. A sāmānyā's love spreads over many men, which cannot yield genuine rasa toward Kṛṣṇa.

Rather, because she is joined to real bhāva, the maidservant Kubjā is accepted precisely as a parakīyā. The particle 'eva' here is exactly what the two commentators will read differently.

Here is Jīva's key move. In 'parakīyā eva,' he takes the 'eva' to mean 'like' — so the verse says Kubjā is parakīyā-LIKE, not literally another man's wife.
'परकीया एव' में जो 'एव' है, वह समानता के अर्थ में है।
This is where Jīva and Viśvanātha part ways: Jīva reads eva = iva ('like'), making her only resemble a parakīyā; Viśvanātha (see c2.s10) reads eva straight ('truly a parakīyā'). Not to be harmonized.

He gives a stock grammar example. Take 'praviśa piṇḍam' — literally 'enter the rice-ball,' which is nonsense. 'Enter' needs a place, so it pulls in the word 'house': 'enter the house.' 'Rice-ball' needs a fitting action, so it pulls in 'eat': 'eat the rice-ball.' Because neither word can be construed literally with the other, each supplies the other's missing word by ākṣepa (implication). In just the same way, here the 'because'-ablative rasābhāsa-prasaṅgāt, having nothing to attach to, forces in the implied conclusion — 'a sādhāraṇī is impossible for Kṛṣṇa.' The analogy proves only this filling-in-by-implication; it says nothing about the content of the two cases.
जैसे 'प्रविश पिण्डम्' में 'प्रविश' (क्रिया) और 'पिण्डम्' (कर्म) की परस्पर संगति नहीं बैठती, इसी से 'गृहम्' और 'भक्षय' — इन दो पदों को (अध्याहार से) जोड़ लिया जाता है।

sairandhrī kubjā tu — but the maidservant Kubjā; sāmānya-sadṛśī api — though resembling a common woman; na tu sāmānyā — is not a common woman; iti arthaḥ — this is the sense of 'tādṛk api'; bahu-nāyaka-niṣṭhatva-dharma-ayogāt — because she lacks the many-lovers trait.
परन्तु सैरन्ध्री कुब्जा 'तादृक् अपि' — सामान्या के सदृश होते हुए भी सामान्या नहीं — ऐसा अर्थ है; क्योंकि उसमें अनेक नायकों में निष्ठ होने का धर्म नहीं है।
So 'tādṛk api' ('though such') means this: the maidservant Kubjā resembles a common woman, yet is not one — because she lacks the defining trait of a common woman, a heart fixed on many lovers.
परन्तु सैरन्ध्री कुब्जा — 'वैसी होते हुए भी', अर्थात् साधारण स्त्री के समान होते हुए भी, साधारण स्त्री नहीं है — यह अर्थ है; क्योंकि उसमें अनेक नायकों में लगे रहने का धर्म नहीं है।

And how far does the resemblance go? Only in one single respect: that there is no prospect of marriage with Kṛṣṇa. In that limited sense alone is she 'like' a common woman.
और साधारण स्त्री से उसकी समानता केवल एक अंश में ही समझनी चाहिए — विवाह की संभावना न होने के कारण।

bhāva-yogāt — because joined to love; parakīyā eva — truly a parakīyā; lokebhyaḥ nihnutya eva — precisely by hiding it from people; kṛṣṇena tasyāḥ ramaṇāt — because Kṛṣṇa enjoyed her.
'भाव-योगात् परकीया एव' — क्योंकि कृष्ण ने लोगों से छिपाकर ही उसके साथ रमण किया।
Here is Viśvanātha's key move, and it differs from Jīva's. He takes 'parakīyā eva' straight: she is TRULY a parakīyā — because Kṛṣṇa enjoyed her secretly, hiding it from people, exactly as one does with another man's woman.
'भाव-योगात् परकीया एव' का अर्थ — कृष्ण ने लोगों से छिपाकर ही उसके साथ रमण किया, (इसीलिए वह परकीया है)।
Contrast c1.s7: Jīva reads eva = iva, so 'parakīyā-LIKE'; Viśvanātha reads eva emphatically, 'truly a parakīyā,' grounding it in the secrecy of Kṛṣṇa's enjoyment. The two readings are left standing side by side, not merged.

उसने भी उसी एक (कृष्ण) में निष्ठ रहने के कारण 'कृष्ण ही मेरे रहस्य (गुप्त) रमण हैं' — ऐसी भावना की, (इस कारण भी वह परकीया है)।
And the secrecy went both ways. She too, devoted to him alone, held the thought: 'Kṛṣṇa alone is my secret lover.' So from her side as well the love was hidden and exclusive — the mark of a parakīyā.
उसने भी उसी एक कृष्ण में लगी रहकर 'कृष्ण ही मेरे गुप्त रमण हैं' — ऐसी भावना की, (इससे भी वह परकीया सिद्ध होती है)।

itiso it is understood(ऐसा सिद्ध होता है) — इति
ata eva uktam — therefore it is said; āhūya kāntām nava-saṅgama-hriyā — 'calling his beloved, with the shyness of a fresh union'; iti tasyāḥ saṅgamasya navatvam — this [shows] the newness of her union.
इसीलिए कहा गया है — 'आहूय कान्ताम् नव-संगम-ह्रिया' (प्रिया को बुलाकर नये संगम की लज्जा से) — इससे उसके संगम की नवीनता (सिद्ध होती है)।
For this reason the line is quoted: 'having called his beloved, with the bashfulness of a fresh union.' The point is that her union with Kṛṣṇa was ever-new — always carrying the shyness of a first meeting, the hallmark of secret, parakīyā-style love.
इसीलिए कहा गया है — 'प्रिया को बुलाकर नये संगम की लज्जा से' — इससे उसके संगम का नयापन (सिद्ध होता है)।
Why cited: Quoted to prove the ever-freshness (navatva) of Kubjā's union with Kṛṣṇa — the shyness of a new meeting — supporting Viśvanātha's reading of her as truly a parakīyā.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह पद्य-चरण उसके संगम की नवीनता (नयेपन) को दिखाने के लिए उद्धृत है।
