Jīva names the move Rūpa is making. Rūpa does not argue in his own voice here. He reaches for a verse by an earlier teacher and cites it as authority. The little lead-in 'tathā coktam' — 'and so it has been said' — is the flag that a borrowed proof-text follows.
pramāṇayati = to set up as a pramāṇa, an authority; pūrvācārya = a predecessor teacher. Jīva reads the whole mūla as a citation Rūpa is leaning on.

Jīva first pins down the word 'principal' (aṅgin). What makes a rasa the chief one? A whole literary work is built to carry it through to its fullness. Whatever rasa the composition exists to complete — that one, and only that one, is the aṅgin, the governing rasa. Here that is śṛṅgāra.

Jīva sharpens the poets' rule. Their 'not accepted' is not absolute. In some minor, incidental rasa the married woman may well be allowed — grant that freely. The ban applies only where she would be the heroine of the chief rasa. That, and only that, is what the poets forbid.

The Sāhitya-darpaṇa's rule, quoted in full. In śṛṅgāra, two women are barred as heroine: the married woman, and the courtesan who has no real love. Every other woman may serve as the ālambana, the support of the mood. As for heroes, the dakṣiṇa (even-handed) type and the others are all admitted.
Why cited: Adduced as the poets' authoritative rule (Sāhitya-darpaṇa 3.212) that the paroḍhā is barred as heroine in śṛṅgāra — the very verdict the mūla names and then exempts the gopīs from.

A small grammatical note on the quote. The 'ca' in 'and a loveless courtesan' is not just linking two items in one breath. It opens a distinct clause. The two exclusions — the married woman, and separately the loveless courtesan — are set up as two different cases.

Jīva shows how far the 'loveless' clause reaches. It is not only the courtesan. Even a man's own wife, if she has no real love, falls under it. She too must be excluded. The bar is on lovelessness wherever it is found, not just on the courtesan.

Jīva points, by its opening words, to another authoritative line: 'a woman established with another man…', and what follows. It is the standard definition of the paroḍhā — the one who belongs to, is settled with, another.
Why cited: Referenced by its opening words to fix the definition of the paroḍhā — the woman 'settled with another man' — grounding the term the poets' rule turns on.

Now Jīva turns to why they are the exception. The verse supplies an epithet for the gopīs that is 'pregnant with the reason' — it describes them and justifies them in one word. That word is 'āśaṁsayā', 'out of longing'. He unpacks it next.
hetu-garbha-viśeṣaṇa = a qualifying phrase that carries its own justification inside it — it both describes the gopīs and states why the paroḍhā-ban cannot reach them.

This is the heart of Jīva's reading. Kṛṣṇa wants a particular prema-rasa — one that can only ripen through a long, staged unfolding of pastimes. To get it, he deliberately does not lead with his majesty: his omniscience, his omnipotence, his lordship over everything — he sets all that in the background. He calls instead on just one power, the līlā-śakti fit for the job. Through it he brings the gopīs down. And note what they really are: his eternal beloveds. But by the staged illusion that they are other men's wives, a special mode of rasa becomes possible. He manifests them in such a way that even the eternality of his birth and pastimes is, for the moment, forgotten.
para-dāratva-bhrama = the appearance, produced by the līlā-śakti, that the gopīs belong to other men; Jīva stresses they are nitya-preyasī (eternal consorts) underneath — the 'other's-wife' status is a staged bhrama serving the rasa.

So the conclusion. Two things are equally the work of the līlā-śakti: the appearance that the gopīs are other men's wives, and the fact that there is no actual union with any other man. The 'married-to-another' look is staged, and behind it there is no real adultery at all. Both are stage-effects of that one potency.

yadyapi nirvighne api sambhoge raso bhavati eva — though rasa does arise even in untroubled union; tathāpi 'na vinā vipralambhena sambhogaḥ puṣṭim aśnute' iti bharata-nyāyena — yet by Bharata's maxim, 'union gains no fullness without separation'; vipralambhaḥ ca kutracit apekṣyate — separation too is needed somewhere.
Jīva lays down a principle from dramaturgy. Yes, rasa does arise even when union is smooth and unobstructed. But — as Bharata Muni's rule has it — 'union never fattens, never comes to its fullness, without separation.' So at some point separation (vipralambha) is required for the union-rasa to reach its peak.
vipralambha = love-in-separation; sambhoga = love-in-union. Bharata's maxim: union-rasa ripens only against the backdrop of separation — the ground Jīva now uses to prize the parakīyā situation.

Here Jīva paints the whole scenario, and it is the peak. Take a couple who are truly husband and wife. By the līlā-śakti, on the fiction of another birth, their very awareness of being married is dissolved. Each is made to believe in marriages to others; the supposed husband is fooled by a contrived stand-in wife. So they meet in secret, daring to leap over every rule of society and scripture. The unceasing fear of being caught makes each meeting rare and precious. When the hero is off traveling far away, they cannot even imagine how to reunite — and then, somehow, they do. And at last the līlā-śakti reveals to the world that they were wedded all along. For such a couple, and only such, the very highest wonder of joy breaks out. That is what the parakīyā-setup is for.
The scenario maps the Vraja love: the gopīs and Kṛṣṇa are truly wedded (svarūpataḥ), but the līlā-śakti stages the 'other's-wife' fiction so that secrecy, danger, and rarity heighten the union to its utmost — the sukha-camatkāra Jīva says is unmatched.

tatra hetū — the two reasons; rasa-vidheḥ (= rasa-āsvādasya vidheḥ) āśaṁsayā — by the longing for the ordaining of rasa-tasting, i.e. 'let śṛṅgāra-rasa's tasting too be enjoined in scripture'; kaṁsāriṇā śrī-kṛṣṇena eva svayam avatāritānāṁ prapañca-gocarī-kṛtānām — by Kṛṣṇa himself brought down, made manifest in the world.
Now the grounds for both claims, from the rest of the verse. 'Out of longing for the rasa-vidhi' — Viśvanātha reads rasa-vidhi as the ordaining of the tasting of rasa, and the longing as Kṛṣṇa's wish: 'let the tasting of śṛṅgāra-rasa, too, have its sanction in scripture.' Driven by that wish, Kṛṣṇa himself — Kaṁsāri — brought the gopīs down and made them visible in this world.

asya arthaḥ — its meaning; nivṛtti-śāstreṣu śānta-rasaḥ eva vihitaḥ — in the scriptures of withdrawal, only śānta-rasa is enjoined.
Viśvanātha now explains the point at length. Start with the scriptures of withdrawal — the renunciant path. There, only one rasa is sanctioned: śānta, the peaceful mood. Nothing else.

Why is śānta the one sanctioned there? Worldly bondage grows from the taint of lust at its root. And śānta-rasa turns that bondage back, cuts against it. Because it reverses saṁsāra, the withdrawal-scriptures prescribe it.

Now the turn that changes everything. With the Lord it is the reverse. When his play of dallying with 'others' wives' was made manifest in this world, the Bhāgavata itself — 'what Kṛṣṇa sported with the wives of Vraja…', 'the one who hears and retells it…' — actually issued an injunction to relish it. What is hell-bound for anyone else becomes, in his case, scripturally commanded. And since that very pastime cannot occur anywhere without the wives of Vraja, Kṛṣṇa, descending himself, brought them down along with him.
The embedded quotes are from Bhāgavata 10.33.39 (the rāsa-līlā phala-śruti): hearing and retelling Kṛṣṇa's play with the gopīs is enjoined and cures lust — hence what is otherwise hell-causing is here scripturally praised.

Now the grand ladder, and each rung is fixed by scripture. First: of Brahman, Paramātmā, and Bhagavān, the Bhāgavata's 'the knowers of truth call that…' establishes the personal, Bhagavān, as highest. Next, weighing its intent, the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu's 'Hari is threefold — pūrṇatama, pūrṇatara, pūrṇa' fixes the most-full form, Kṛṣṇa, as highest within that. Next, among the rasas — servitude, friendship, and the rest — being the ground of the ujjvala, the amorous rasa, is highest. And finally, within that, the very peak is the aupapatya, the paramour-love, expounded in this book. Step by step, the parakīyā-love is shown to be the utmost limit.
aupapatya = the paramour (upapati) relationship, i.e. parakīyā-love. The four-rung hierarchy (personal God > Kṛṣṇa as pūrṇatama > amorous rasa > parakīyā) places the very subject of this book at the summit. Quotes: Bhāgavata 1.2.11; Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu.

The comparison sharpens. The amorous rasa looks to the one complete Lord; the śānta-rasa looks only to the impersonal Brahman. So the amorous rasa is thereby fixed as the utmost peak of excellence, standing far above śānta.

Viśvanātha reads the grammar closely. The verse says the sober one, 'having gained the highest bhakti,' then casts off lust, the heart's disease. That little gerund — 'having gained' — fixes the order. First, even in a person still sick with lust, this supreme bhakti enters. And then, by that same bhakti, the lust itself is quickly destroyed. So the amorous devotion comes first and cures the very disease. It cannot be a mere semblance.
The ktvā-pratyaya (gerund 'pratilabhya', 'having gained') marks temporal sequence: bhakti is attained first, and it is what then removes the kāma — proof that hearing the gopī-līlā works as a cure, not a corruption. Quote: Bhāgavata 10.33.39.

And the command to relish it was placed in the Bhāgavata, the scripture for the topmost renunciants. Faced with this unchecked sovereignty of Kṛṣṇa — that he can make the forbidden supreme — Rūpa felt the rasa of sheer wonder, and out of it spoke the words 'crest-jewel of the circle of rasikas.'

yad vā — or else; nanu asya rasasya vihitatvam api astu — granted this rasa is sanctioned; paroḍhāṁ varjayitvā iti ādinā rasa-ābhāsatvam api astu — but by 'excluding the married woman…' let it even be a semblance of rasa; rasa-ābhāsa-ādīnām api 'sarve hi rasanāt rasāḥ' iti āsvāda-vidheḥ — for even semblances are relished, 'all are rasas because savored', there being an injunction to taste them.
Now Viśvanātha opens a second line — a fresh way to read the epithet, staged through an objector's voice. The objector says: fine, grant that this rasa is sanctioned. But by the rule 'excluding the married woman,' let it be only a rasābhāsa — a mere semblance of rasa, technically defective. Even semblances get relished, after all: 'all are rasas, because they are savored.' So there is still a command to taste it, even if it is only a semblance.
This 'yad vā' opens a suspended second reading and is left standing — not resolved into the first. rasa-ābhāsa = a semblance/improper rasa (e.g. love toward another's wife). The objector concedes sanction but downgrades it to a mere semblance; s18–s19 answer via the epithet. Quote: 'sarve hi rasanād rasāḥ'.

And this is why the same epithet does double duty. To answer the 'mere semblance' charge, Rūpa said 'by the crest-jewel of the circle of rasikas.' The word is placed there precisely to block the rasābhāsa reading.

The reasoning behind the word. If what Kṛṣṇa relished were only a semblance of rasa, then Kṛṣṇa would turn out to be no true connoisseur of rasa at all. But he is the crest-jewel of all connoisseurs — so what he relished cannot be a mere semblance. The epithet refutes the objection by itself.

Viśvanātha now turns to another camp. There are interpreters who read the verse this way: the gopīs were brought down and made manifest in the world 'out of a longing for a particular mode (prakāra) of rasa.' He is about to press them on what this implies.
Source reads 'prakārasaya' — a typo for prakārasya ('of the mode'), decoded here as intended. This rival reading takes rasa-vidhi as 'the manner/arrangement of rasa' (the line Jīva's commentary develops); Viśvanātha will not harmonize with it but interrogate it.

The opponents reply: of course there is rasa in the unmanifest realm. But there the gopīs are his own wives, svīyā, so it is only the rasa that fits the wife-state. It is not the heightened rasa you get among the parakīyā — the rasa that swells with love through the sense of a hard-won, rare meeting and through the thrill of overleaping every rule of society and scripture. That degree of intensity is simply not present in the svīyā state.

The opponents finish their position. So, they say, to taste that special heightening, the moment the desire for it arose, then and only then were the gopīs brought down into the world as apparent wives of other men. The līlā-śakti produced in them the illusion of belonging to another, and for a limited stretch of time the relishing was achieved. On this view, the whole parakīyā-setup is occasional and illusion-made.

Viśvanātha voices the opponents' escape and turns it back. Suppose you say: this delusion is not from māyā at all — it comes from prema, love, staged by the līlā-śakti. Then answer this: is there no prema in Kṛṣṇa's eternal, unmanifest realm? Of course there is. Yet there Kṛṣṇa is not deluded — there he knows the gopīs perfectly well as his own. So prema does not force any delusion. Your defense collapses.

Another consequence, from the case of Śukadeva. If the avatāra-play were merely occasional and so a thing of māyā, look at what breaks. The Bhāgavata says of Śuka that his very breath, mind, and senses were locked tight in yoga, stilled in his own bliss; and Śuka himself tells Parīkṣit, 'though I was fully fixed in the featureless Brahman, my mind was seized by the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa.' Now Śuka is the crest-jewel of the self-satisfied sages. A soul like that being pulled away even from Brahman by the līlā makes no sense at all if that līlā were only māyā. So it is not māyā.
Quotes: Bhāgavata 10.87.23 and 2.1.7. A liberated ātmārāma like Śuka could not be captivated by anything merely illusory — so his attraction proves the avatāra-līlā is spiritual (cit), not occasional/māyika.

The reason the escape fails. The Bhāgavata's own words — 'what Śuka had studied was [then] narrated' — show that the very text that seized his mind is the Bhāgavata, and the Bhāgavata is made up of the manifest avatāra-pastimes. So it was precisely the manifest līlā that drew him. The attraction cannot be shunted onto the unmanifest alone.

And now the sharpest stroke: Viśvanātha turns to Jīva Gosvāmī's own work. In the Bhagavat-sandarbha, on the verse 'he for whom there is no birth or action,' Jīva Gosvāmī himself, commenting on the eternality of all the pastimes, has already struck down this whole wrong doctrine. In other words, the very authority the opponents follow has settled that all līlā is eternal — so their 'occasional' reading is refuted from within their own tradition.
Quote: Bhāgavata 8.3.8 (= Bhagavat-sandarbha anuccheda 138). Viśvanātha does not harmonize with the rival reading but overturns it — invoking Jīva's own Sandarbha to argue sarva-līlā-nityatva (the eternality of all pastimes). prātibhāsika = the apparent/manifest order, taken as grounded in the eternal.

bhāgavatāmṛte tathā eva uktam — 'śaktayaḥ ca sarva-utkarṣa-sarva-aiśvarya-mādhurya-līlā-satya-saṅkalpatā' iti ādyāḥ — in the Bhāgavatāmṛta it is said just so: 'and the potencies — supreme excellence, all-sovereignty, sweetness, pastime, truth-of-resolve,' and the rest.
And the Bhāgavatāmṛta says exactly this. It lists Kṛṣṇa's potencies: supreme excellence, complete sovereignty, sweetness, pastime, the truth of his every resolve, and so on. These are the powers that must all be fully manifest for him to be perfectly complete.
Why cited: Adduced to name the very potencies (including mādhurya and līlā) whose complete manifestation constitutes Kṛṣṇa's paripūrṇatva — setting up the reductio that denying the supreme rasa in the eternal realm would leave these unmanifest and so unmake his godhood.

Now the clinching blow. Suppose, as the opponents say, the supreme relish of rasa is missing in Kṛṣṇa's eternal, unmanifest realm. Then the potency that produces that heightening — with its sweetness, its truth-of-will, and the rest — would be left unmanifest there, only scantily expressed. But then his fullness is incomplete. And if his fullness is incomplete, then his very being God-in-person collapses. Deny the supreme rasa in the eternal realm, and you have denied Kṛṣṇa's godhood itself.

And Viśvanātha drives it home with a challenge. If Kṛṣṇa's godhood itself is unsettled, then tell me — what becomes of the whole edifice of goal and means, of sādhya and sādhana? It all rests on his being God in person. Pull that out, and there is nothing left to establish.

A last objection, offering a compromise. 'All right — grant that the heightened rasa is established in the manifest realm. Even so, in the unmanifest realm it can still be relished: through hearing and remembering the accounts of it, as a participant in the audience.' Viśvanātha grants this much: 'true' — but only so far, as the next line qualifies.

tat api parakīyā-sambhoga-sukha-abhāvena tat-kathā-anusmṛti-janita-tattva-sambhoga-lipsayā ca aphalavatyā saḥ doṣaḥ tad-avasthaḥ eva iti — even that, lacking the joy of parakīyā-union and breeding only a fruitless craving for real union through recollection, leaves the fault standing just as before; alam ativistareṇa — enough of elaboration.
And Viśvanātha closes the case. Even that audience-relishing does not save the opponents. It has no actual parakīyā-union in it, so it lacks that joy; and the craving for real union that mere remembering stirs up goes unfulfilled, bearing no fruit. So the same defect they were caught in stands exactly as before: the supreme rasa cannot be reduced to a vicarious, occasional thing. And with that — 'enough of elaboration' — he lays the matter to rest.
