Viśvanātha stages it. In the pleasure-grove Kṛṣṇa sits on a flower-strewn seat. The sakhīs drag Rādhā over and plant her right at his side, then settle down facing him to start a conversation. To ease her shyness — and to let her drink in his beauty — Kṛṣṇa keeps his face turned toward a sakhī and says: 'Ah, what can I say! My luck is strong today — here I am reciting my Gaurī-mantra in this quiet spot, and a lucky omen walks right in!'
Kṛṣṇa teasingly casts himself as a devotee of the goddess Gaurī; Rādhā (gaurī, 'the fair one') arriving is his mock 'omen'.

Kṛṣṇa finishes: 'Why — even in the forest, even at night, these utterly chaste, pious women wipe out all the dark by the sheer glow of their limbs, and here I get to see them out of nowhere!' At that comes 'tiryak-kṣipta…': her charm flashes first from the darting corner of her eye. 'Cast sideways' means the glance is thrown obliquely — she does not turn her face to look at him head-on.

'calat…ruci': the charm comes from an eye that never rests even a moment, and from its corner alone — never from the full eye turned on him. By that sidelong flash she hinted her real barb: 'Oh yes — we are the only loose women here; you alone are the saint, lost in recalling union with your beloved goddess Gaurī!' That sarcastic inner meaning is what the glance conveyed.
marma-artha = the pointed, cutting inner sense; vyañjayām āsa = she suggested it (not spoke it).

Kṛṣṇa hints Rādhā is the promised jāmbūnada-mālā (golden necklace); she rebuffs the hint. Source repeats 'jāmbūnada-mālā alaṅkariṣyatīty uktavati' — apparent dittography; a single prediction is meant, which Kṛṣṇa reports and her brows reject.

śleṣa on surataru: peel off its first three syllables — su-ra-ta — and you get surata, 'lovemaking'; Kṛṣṇa says the mere word already holds what he wants. The clause 'sadā tāḥ tena' is cryptic (perhaps 'always they [are had] by that [word]') and may be corrupt.

The diving metaphor: the meaning-jewels (artha-maṇi) are like pearls fetched from an ocean, and fetching them in the dark (niśe) is hardest of all — hence his plea of a 'poor intellect' (dīna-dhī). 'niśe' could alternatively be read as a vocative, 'O night'; the diver-in-darkness sense is primary. Left unresolved beyond this.
