s1invocation

sanātana-samaḥ yasyahe whose equal is Sanātana bahuvrīhi; samaḥ 'equal', yasya gen. of the possessorजिसके समान (तुल्य) सनातन हैं — अर्थात् जिसका बड़ा भाई सनातन के समान श्रेष्ठ है
jyāyānthe elder / greater one comparative of praśasya/vṛddhaबड़ा (आयु और गुण में ज्येष्ठ)
śrīmān sanātanaḥthe blessed Sanātana the elder brother, Sanātana Gosvāmīश्रीमान् सनातन (गोस्वामी)
yasya sanātana-samaḥ — he whose equal is Sanātana himself; jyāyān — the elder; śrīmān sanātanaḥ — the blessed Sanātana.
yasya sanātana-samaḥ — जिसके समान (कोई और) सनातन हो; jyāyān — बड़ा भाई; śrīmān sanātanaḥ — वह श्रीमान् सनातन है।
Jīva opens by honoring the elder brother: the blessed Sanātana, whose only equal is Sanātana himself — none else measures up to him. This is the first line of Jīva's benediction naming his lineage.
जिसका बड़ा भाई श्रीमान् सनातन है — ऐसा सनातन, जिसके समान कोई दूसरा नहीं।

That younger brother of Sanātana — dear to Śrī — is the blessed Rūpa, the true refuge of Jīva. 'Jīva' is the commentator's own name, so he calls Rūpa both the refuge of every living being and his own personal shelter.
जो श्री का प्रिय है, सनातन का वही छोटा भाई, वह यही श्रीरूप हैं — जीवमात्र के, और जीव (टीकाकार) के भी श्रेष्ठ आश्रय।

śrī-hari-bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhau jāte purā durāloke |
śrī-hari-bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhau jāte purāwhen long ago the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu had appeared locative absolute: 'the ocean having arisen'; sindhau loc., jāte loc. part.पहले जब श्रीहरि-भक्तिरसामृतसिन्धु (नामक ग्रन्थरूपी समुद्र) प्रकट हो चुका, तब
durālokehard to look into loc., agreeing with sindhau; dur-āloka 'difficult of view'जो दुरवलोक है — जिसमें (गहराई के कारण) देखना/प्रवेश कठिन है, ऐसे उस (समुद्र) में
purā — long ago; śrī-hari-bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhau jāte — the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu having appeared; durāloke — [that ocean being] hard to look into.
śrī-hari-bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhau jāte purā — पहले जब वह भक्तिरसामृतसिन्धु प्रकट हो चुका; durāloke — उस दुरवलोक (कठिनता से देखे जाने वाले) समुद्र में।
Jīva now begins his second benedictory verse, about this very book. Long ago the ocean called Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu had appeared — an ocean hard to gaze into. (The clause hangs; s4 completes it.)
पहले जब श्रीहरि-भक्तिरसामृतसिन्धु रूपी समुद्र प्रकट हो चुका — वह समुद्र जिसमें देखना (प्रवेश) कठिन है —।

ujjvala-nīlamaṇau — उज्ज्वल-नीलमणि में; mama asau vivṛtiḥ — मेरी यह टीका; locana-rocanī — लोचन-रोचनी (नामवाली)।
Completing the thought: upon that hard-to-see ocean, now shining as the Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi (a bright sapphire), this commentary of mine — the eye-gladdener — is offered. 'Locana-rocanī' is the title of Jīva's own commentary; he names it here.
उस उज्ज्वल-नीलमणि पर मेरी यह टीका है, जिसका नाम है 'लोचन-रोचनी' — जो नेत्रों को आनन्द देती है।

Jīva sets up the verse. Rūpa, who had already revealed the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu, opened there just a little of the utterly new rasa called ujjvala. Not content to leave it done, he composed this book, Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi, to unfold that rasa fully — following the maxim 'drink the Bhāgavata rasa', which treats the rasa (what is suggested) and the book (what suggests it) as one. And in the opening verse, by a single śleṣa utterance, he praises both his own deity (Kṛṣṇa) and his own guru at once. So he prays, beginning 'nāmākṛṣṭa…'.
Why cited: The Bhāgavata line 'pibata bhāgavataṁ rasam' is adduced as the maxim that lets the rasa itself and the book that reveals it be treated as non-different — so praising the book is praising the rasa.
क्यों उद्धृत: 'पियो भागवत रस' — इस भागवत-वचन को इसलिए उद्धृत किया गया है कि जैसे वहाँ रस और ग्रन्थ में अभेद माना जाता है, वैसे ही यहाँ उज्ज्वल-रस और उज्ज्वल-नीलमणि ग्रन्थ के अभेद को सिद्ध किया जा सके।

tatra nija-daivata-pakṣe — on the deity reading; nāmnā nāma-mātreṇa ākṛṣṭāḥ — drawn by his mere name; tat-tad-avatārāvatāri-bhakti-rasikāḥ — the rasa-relishing devotees who are the various avatāras and the source of avatāras; yena saḥ — he by whom they are drawn.
tatra nija-daivata-pakṣe — इष्टदेव पक्ष में; nāmnā nāma-mātreṇa ākṛṣṭāḥ — केवल नाम से खिंच आए; tat-tad-avatārāvatāri-bhakti-rasikāḥ — उन-उन अवतारों तथा अवतारी के भक्त-रसिक; yena saḥ — जिसके द्वारा वह (नामाकृष्ट-रसज्ञ)।
Jīva now takes the deity reading of the first epithet. On this side, 'nāmākṛṣṭa-rasajñaḥ' means: he by whose mere name the rasa-relishing devotees are drawn — devotees who are themselves the various avatāras and even the source of all avatāras. So 'rasajña' here = those rasa-knowers, drawn by his name.

Deity reading of the second epithet. 'By his character' means by his joyous nature. Kṛṣṇa always, perpetually kindles his own father, the blessed Nanda — that is, he makes Nanda's parental love blaze up. So 'śīlena uddīpayan' = by his lovable ways he inflames Nanda's affection.
यहाँ 'शील' का अर्थ है सुखद स्वभाव। उस स्वभाव से वह नित्य ही अपने पिता श्रीमान् नन्द के भाव को उद्दीप्त करता — भड़काता — रहता है।

Deity reading of the third epithet. 'By his own form' means by his beauty. Kṛṣṇa gives a festival to everyone by his beauty — his loveliness is a celebration for all who see him.
यहाँ 'निज-रूप' का अर्थ है अपना सौन्दर्य। उस सौन्दर्य से वह सबके ही लिए उत्सव (आनन्द) देने वाला है।

yasya ātmā śrī-vigrahaḥ sanātanaḥ nityaḥ — जिसका आत्मा अर्थात् श्रीविग्रह सनातन (नित्य) है; saḥ — वह।
Deity reading of the fourth epithet. 'sanātanātmā' means: he whose self — that is, his divine body — is eternal, never perishing. Kṛṣṇa's very form is everlasting.
यहाँ 'आत्मा' का अर्थ है श्रीविग्रह, और 'सनातन' का अर्थ है नित्य। अतः जिसका श्रीविग्रह नित्य है, वह 'सनातनात्मा' है।

prādurbhāva-mātreṇa — केवल प्राकट्य से ही; labdha-janmādi-vyavahāraḥ — जन्म आदि का व्यवहार जिसमें प्राप्त हुआ; iti bhāvaḥ — यही तात्पर्य है।
Jīva guards the last point: though Kṛṣṇa's body is eternal, when he appears we merely speak of his 'birth' and so on. It is only by his appearing that talk of birth attaches to him — his form does not actually begin. Such is the sense.
उनका विग्रह नित्य है; जन्म आदि का व्यवहार तो केवल उनके प्रकट होने भर से (उपचार से) कहा जाता है — वस्तुतः जन्म नहीं। यही तात्पर्य है।

Jīva now glosses 'prabhu' and 'jayati' on the deity side. He is 'prabhu' for two reasons: because he always prevails (pra-bhavana), and because he is the one I must serve (so, my Lord, īśvara). And 'jayati' means: may he reveal just the full measure of his own excellence.
'प्रभु' शब्द के दो अर्थ हैं — क्योंकि वह सदा प्रभवनशील (समर्थ) है, इसलिए 'प्रभु'; और क्योंकि वह मेरा सेव्य है, इसलिए 'ईश्वर'। तथा 'जयति' का अर्थ है — वह अपने ही उत्कर्ष को सदा प्रकट करता रहे।

Now Jīva gives the second, guru reading of the first epithet — held open, not chosen over the first. On this side 'nāmākṛṣṭa-rasajñaḥ' means: the guru whose tongue (rasajñā = the taste-knower) is drawn and captivated by the names Kṛṣṇa and so on. Both readings stand together.
दूसरे — गुरु वाले — पक्ष में अर्थ यह है: यहाँ 'रसज्ञ' का अर्थ है रस (स्वाद) जानने वाली जिह्वा। कृष्ण आदि नामों से जिसकी वह जिह्वा खिंच गई — वश में हो गई — वही 'नामाकृष्ट-रसज्ञ' (गुरु) है।

tan-nāma ahaṁ tasya utsava-dāyīI, bearing that name [Rūpa], give a festival to him the commentator Jīva reads himself in: 'I named Rūpa's follower' give festival to him'रूप' यह जिसका नाम है (वह मैं जीव), उस (रूप) के लिए उत्सव देने वाला
tathā nijaḥ ātma-anugataḥ yaḥ rūpaḥ — his own Rūpa who follows his self; tan-nāma ahaṁ tasya utsava-dāyī — I who bear that name give a festival to him.
tathā nijaḥ ātma-anugataḥ yaḥ rūpaḥ — अपना अनुगामी जो रूप; tan-nāma ahaṁ — 'रूप' नाम वाला (वह मैं); tasya utsava-dāyī — उसके लिए उत्सव देने वाला।
Guru reading of the third epithet, where 'nija-rūpa' is heard as 'his own Rūpa'. The guru is one who has his own Rūpa (Gosvāmī), a follower true to his self; and I — bearing that same name — give a festival to him. On this side the epithet folds Rūpa's name and the commentator's devotion into the compound.
इस पक्ष में 'निज-रूप' का अर्थ है — अपना अनुयायी, 'रूप' नामवाला। टीकाकार जीव यहाँ अपने को जोड़ते हैं: उस रूप के लिए उत्सव देने वाला (यह अर्थ बनता है)।

tathā sanātanaḥ nāma ātmā vigrahaḥ yasya saḥ — he whose self, i.e. his body, bears the name Sanātana.
sanātanaḥ nāma ātmā vigrahaḥ yasya saḥ — 'सनातन' नाम ही जिसका आत्मा/विग्रह है, वह।
Guru reading of the fourth epithet. Here 'sanātanātmā' is heard as: he whose self — his very body — is named Sanātana. Where the deity side read 'eternal body', the guru side hears the elder brother Sanātana as the guru's own self.
इस पक्ष में 'सनातन' को व्यक्तिवाचक नाम माना गया है — जिसका आत्मा (देह) ही 'सनातन' (गोस्वामी) है, वह 'सनातनात्मा' है।

prabhuḥ iti pūrvavat'prabhu' is to be taken as before pūrvavat 'as before' — carry over the deity-side gloss of prabhu'प्रभु' — यहाँ भी पहले की भाँति (इष्टदेव-पक्ष वाला वही अर्थ लागू)
jayati iti caand likewise 'jayati' ca 'and'; the same gloss of jayati applies here tooऔर 'जयति' — (यहाँ भी वही अर्थ)
prabhuḥ iti pūrvavat — 'prabhu' as before; jayati iti ca — and 'jayati' likewise.
prabhuḥ iti pūrvavat — 'प्रभु' का अर्थ पूर्ववत्; jayati iti ca — तथा 'जयति' का भी।
Jīva closes the guru reading briefly: 'prabhu' and 'jayati' are understood just as on the deity side — no separate gloss is needed. Both śleṣa readings of the verse are now complete.
इस गुरु-पक्ष में भी 'प्रभु' और 'जयति' का वही अर्थ लगा लीजिए जो पहले (इष्टदेव-पक्ष में) कहा गया।

Viśvanātha opens his commentary with his own benedictory verse to Hari with Rādhā. Kṛṣṇa sweats even while the restless corner of Rādhā's glance fans him like a breeze; he trembles even while lodged inside the city of her own radiance. The paradox is the point: what should cool and settle him only heats and stirs him. (The sentence continues in s2.)
राधा के चंचल कटाक्षों के अंचल से मानो पंखा झला जा रहा है, फिर भी वह (कृष्ण) पसीने से भीगता है; उसकी कान्ति रूपी नगरी में बसाया गया है, फिर भी वह विचलित रहता है — विरोधाभास यह कि शीतल करने वाली वस्तुएँ भी उसे शान्त नहीं करतीं।

The verse completes: though Rādhā makes Kṛṣṇa drink the nectar of her smile again and again, he only thirsts the more. All three actions — the fanning, the housing, the giving-to-drink — are done by Śrī Rādhā, yet each deepens rather than stills his longing. May that Hari grant us delight.

Viśvanātha now begins his second benedictory verse, praising Rūpa's speech as a divine river (named fully in s4). Two śleṣa epithets describe it: its rows of ornaments — the śaṅkara (double-meaning) figures — are praised at every step by those who plunge in with their intellect; and its clear water is the deep resonance (dhvani) of thick rasa. Each phrase reads both as a real river and as Rūpa's eloquence. (Completed in s4.)

Viśvanātha opens his commentary by bowing. He offers repeated obeisance to the feet of Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī. The word "those" (tebhyaḥ) waits for the next line, which will say which feet — the ones whose opinion is described there.

This line completes the bow of the last line. Whose feet does he bow to? Those of the ācāryas who are as deep as ten million oceans, and whose very opinion — their settled teaching — is nectar-mercy for the reader. So the namaskāra is not to Jīva alone as a name, but to that deep, merciful line of understanding.

This is the kārikā itself. Some of the book was written by the author's own wish and some at another's request; but whatever is connected in sequence should be read in its proper order of before and after. The verse thus tells the reader how the work hangs together, so that the mixed origins do not confuse its arrangement.

Why cited: Cited (from Jīva Gosvāmī's own kārikā in his commentary) as the doubt-cutting statement Viśvanātha announced — it settles how the work's parts, written partly by Rūpa's own wish and partly at another's, are to be read in their proper before-and-after sequence.
क्यों उद्धृत: ग्रन्थ की रचना-पद्धति को स्वयं जीव गोस्वामी के शब्दों से सिद्ध करने के लिए यह कारिका उद्धृत की गई है।

This completes the verse begun in the last line. In those two sections — on parakīyā and on mahābhāva — the gopīs' giving up of their own kinfolk and of the respectable path of the elders is praised as something real and actual, not merely apparent. Viśvanātha notes this as one of the book's boldest and most cherished teachings.

This is Viśvanātha's long lead-in to the opening verse. He first heaps praise on the author, Rūpa Gosvāmī: ornament of every connoisseur's glad heart, the Indra of all poets, crest-jewel of the rasikas. Then he explains why Rūpa writes again. Overwhelmed by the joy of endless talk of the great devotees, and having already served out the nectar of bhakti-rasa in the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu, he now wants to delight his most intimate friends once more. So he means to display the ujjvala rasa — a rasa almost unseen even in that earlier book, and deeply secret — as though lifting a shining sapphire out of the casket of his own heart (the pun on the title Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi). And with a single stroke of words he praises two at once as supreme over all: his cherished Lord, Śrī Bhagavān, and his own elder brother, the great devotee. That double praise he performs as the auspicious opening, in the words "nāmākṛṣṭa."

Viśvanātha reads the deeper sense of "jayati" ("he is victorious") in the verse. It means the Lord stands supreme over all. And because the Lord is thus supreme, the author draws courage from him: even in the bold, risky task of bringing this most secret rasa to light, my resolve does not waver. That, Viśvanātha says, is the underlying intent of the word.

jayati vraja-rāja-nandanena hi cintā-kalikā abhyudeti naḥ"the bud of our longing rises up, for it is the son of the king of Vraja who triumphs" — quoted verse-line illustrating the usage of jayati'व्रजराज-नन्दन के कारण ही हमारी चिन्ता की कली उदित होती है' — इस प्रयोग की तरह

jayati vraja-rāja-nandanena hi cintā-kalikā abhyudeti naḥ — 'व्रजराज-नन्दन से ही हमारी चिन्ता की कली उठती है'; itivat — इसी की तरह।
To support his reading of "jayati," Viśvanātha cites a parallel line, where "the son of the king of Vraja triumphs (jayati)" is used in just this sense of supreme presence, drawing forth the poet's own longing. He offers it as a model of the very usage of jayati he has just explained.
जैसे 'जयति व्रजराज-नन्दनेन हि...' में 'जयति' का प्रयोग होता है, वैसे ही यहाँ भी 'जयति' विद्यमानता के अर्थ में है।
Why cited: Cited as a parallel usage confirming that "jayati" carries the sense of abiding supreme over all — the son of the king of Vraja "triumphs" in exactly the way Viśvanātha reads the mūla's jayati.
क्यों उद्धृत: 'जयति' का 'विद्यमान रहना' अर्थ इस प्रकार भी शास्त्र-प्रयोग में मिलता है — यह दिखाने के लिए यह पंक्ति उद्धृत है।

jayati arthena — by the sense of "jayati"; taṁ prati praṇataḥ asmi iti — "toward him I am bowed"; namaskāraḥ api vyajyate — an obeisance too is suggested.
jayati arthena — 'जयति' के अर्थ से; taṁ prati praṇataḥ asmi iti — 'उसके प्रति मैं प्रणत हूँ' यह; namaskāraḥ api vyajyate — नमस्कार भी व्यंजित होता है।
Viśvanātha finds a second layer in "jayati." Besides declaring the Lord's supremacy, the word quietly carries the speaker's own bowing: to say "he triumphs" is to imply "before him I bow down." So the single word does the work of an obeisance as well.
'जयति' के इस अर्थ से 'मैं उसके प्रति प्रणत हूँ' — ऐसा नमस्कार भी छिपे रूप में सूचित हो जाता है।

He backs the last point with a standard definition. An act counts as "obeisance" when it is fit to convey that one is lowering oneself before another. Since "jayati" — declaring another's supremacy — does exactly this, it qualifies as an implied obeisance. The maxim licenses reading the bow into the word.

Now Viśvanātha decodes the first word, nāmākṛṣṭa-rasajñaḥ, on the side where Kṛṣṇa is the cherished Lord. The "rasa-knowers drawn by his name alone" are the beautiful women of Vraja, the gopīs. Why they in particular? Because they are the ones most to be gratified, and because they are foremost among devotees. So Kṛṣṇa is "he by whose very name the gopī-rasikas are drawn."
इष्टदेव-पक्ष में 'नामाकृष्ट-रसज्ञ' का अर्थ — नाम मात्र से आकृष्ट रसिकजन, जो सन्तुष्ट किए जाते हैं और मुख्य हैं, वे व्रज-सुन्दरियाँ हैं; उन्हीं से जो (कृष्ण स्वयं) आकृष्ट है — वह।

Beyond the gopī-specific reading, Viśvanātha notes that the verse says "rasa-knowers" without any restriction. Read that broadly, it means Kṛṣṇa draws every rasa-knower there is — from all the avatāras (himself included) down through devotees of every kind (his own beloved included). And he draws them all by nothing but his own sweetness. Because he alone can do this, the verse quietly shows he is fit to be supreme over all.

Viśvanātha glosses the mūla's word śīlena. First he fixes the term: by the lexicon, śīla means pure, auspicious conduct. So "by his śīla" means by his own blessed behaviour, Kṛṣṇa constantly kindles the parental love of his father Nanda, making it flare up. Then a fine distinction: normally the child is the viṣaya, the object toward whom the parent's love flows. But Kṛṣṇa, by his conduct, becomes something more — the ālambana, the very support that stimulates and rekindles that love. He is at once the one loved and the one who fans the loving. The note below spells out the viṣaya/ālambana pair.
'शील' का अर्थ है सदा अपना मंगलमय चरित्र। उससे वह पिता नन्द को उद्दीप्त करता है, अर्थात् उनके भाव को प्रज्वलित करता है। यद्यपि कृष्ण उनके वात्सल्य का विषय है, फिर भी अपने चरित्र से वह उद्दीपन का आलम्बन भी बन जाता है — यही अर्थ है।
viṣaya vs. ālambana of a bhāva: the viṣaya is the object the mood is directed at, the ālambana is the resting-base on which the mood is founded. Homely example: in a mother's love, the child is the viṣaya (whom she loves) and also the ālambana (the one whose presence the love rests on); a stranger's child is neither. Here the point is stronger — Kṛṣṇa is not only the viṣaya of Nanda's love but, by his very conduct (an uddīpana, a stimulant), also becomes its ālambana, actively rekindling the very love aimed at him.

nija-rūpeṇa sva-saundaryeṇa — by his own form, his beauty; sarvebhyaḥ utsava-dāyī — he gives a festival to all; śleṣeṇa — by a pun; nijasya iva rūpaṁ yeṣāṁ te nija-rūpāḥ sakhāyaḥ — "nija-rūpa" = those whose form is like his, the friends; tebhyaḥ — to them (he gives the festival).
nija-rūpeṇa sva-saundaryeṇa — अपने रूप अर्थात् सौन्दर्य से; sarvebhyaḥ utsava-dāyī — सबके लिए उत्सव-दायी; śleṣeṇa — श्लेष से; nijasya iva rūpaṁ yeṣāṁ te nija-rūpāḥ sakhāyaḥ — जिनका रूप अपने जैसा वे निज-रूप अर्थात् सखा; tebhyaḥ — उनके लिए।
Viśvanātha decodes the mūla's nija-rūpotsava-dāyī and here the verse's pun (śleṣa) opens up — both readings are kept, not decided between. Plain reading: "by his own form" means by his beauty, and Kṛṣṇa gives a festival of joy to everyone who beholds it. Pun reading: "nija-rūpa" can also mean "those whose form is like his own" — the cowherd boys, his friends; and to them he gives a festival of joy. Both senses stand together: joy through his beauty, and joy given to his look-alike friends.
सीधा अर्थ — अपने सौन्दर्य से सबको उत्सव देने वाला। श्लेष से दूसरा अर्थ भी बनता है — जिनका रूप अपने ही जैसा है, वे 'निज-रूप' अर्थात् सखा; उन सखाओं के लिए उत्सव देने वाला। (दोनों अर्थ साथ रखे जाते हैं।)

utsava-dāyīhe gives a festival of joy. resumes the predicateउत्सव देने वाला
tathā nijāḥ svīyāḥ dāsāḥ — likewise "his own" = his servants; tebhyaḥ rūpeṇa sva-darśana-dānena — to them, by his form, i.e. by granting sight of himself; utsava-dāyī — he gives a festival of joy.
tathā nijāḥ svīyāḥ dāsāḥ — वैसे ही निज अर्थात् अपने दास; tebhyaḥ rūpeṇa sva-darśana-dānena — उनके लिए रूप अर्थात् अपने दर्शन के दान से; utsava-dāyī — उत्सव-दायी।
Viśvanātha adds yet another reading of the same phrase, again keeping it open. "His own" (nija) can also mean his servants; and to them Kṛṣṇa gives a festival of joy by his form — here "by his form" is taken as granting them the sight of himself. So the one compound nija-rūpotsava-dāyī now carries three senses side by side: joy through his beauty, joy to his look-alike friends, and joy to his servants through his darśana.
एक और अर्थ — 'निज' अर्थात् अपने दास; उन दासों को 'रूप' अर्थात् अपने दर्शन का दान देकर वह उत्सव देने वाला है।

sanātana-ātmā — सनातन-आत्मा अर्थात्; sat-cit-ānanda-vigrahaḥ iti — सच्चिदानन्द विग्रह वाला — यों।
A short gloss of the mūla word sanātanātmā. It means: one whose very body — his ātmā, his form — is eternal, made of being, awareness, and joy (sac-cid-ānanda). Kṛṣṇa's form is not material or perishable but is that changeless reality itself.
'सनातन-आत्मा' का अर्थ है — जिसका विग्रह (स्वरूप) सत्-चित्-आनन्दमय है।

Viśvanātha ties the whole gloss together. Read in order, the successive phrases of the verse have quietly shown Kṛṣṇa to be the object-support (viṣaya-ālambana) of each of the five devotional rasas in turn — ujjvala (with the gopīs), vātsalya (with Nanda), sakhya (with the friends), dāsya (with the servants), and śānta. Since he alone stands as the base of all five, his supremacy over everyone is thereby established. This is the point the commentary has been building toward.

Among the devotional moods the earlier one in the list always outranks the later, so the ujjvala-rasa — conjugal love — is the chief one. And here is why: the moment Kṛṣṇa, the object, is merely named, the shelters of that mood (the gopīs) are pulled toward him; through that a surplus of love is gained beyond every other relationship. So its abiding emotion, the rati called madhurā, is the most fully unfolded — for it climbs the whole ladder, rati, prema, sneha, māna, praṇaya, rāga, anurāga, mahābhāva, and stands fully revealed only there.

yajñaḥ satraḥ adhvaraḥ yāgaḥ — yajña, satra, adhvara, yāga (synonyms for sacrifice); iti amaraḥ — thus the Amara-kośa.
yajñaḥ satraḥ adhvaraḥ yāgaḥ — यज्ञ, सत्र, अध्वर, याग; iti amaraḥ — ऐसा अमरकोश (में है)।
The Amara-kośa lists 'yajña' along with satra, adhvara, and yāga as words for sacrifice.
'यज्ञ', 'सत्र', 'अध्वर' और 'याग' — ये सब एक ही अर्थ के पर्याय हैं, ऐसा अमरकोश में कहा गया है।
Why cited: A lexical citation (Amara-kośa) confirming that yajña, satra, adhvara, and yāga are synonyms — supplied to license reading 'sava' as the saṅkīrtana-yajña of the previous atom.
क्यों उद्धृत: 'सव' का अर्थ यज्ञ है — इसकी पुष्टि के लिए आचार्य अमरकोश का पर्याय-वचन प्रमाण रूप में उद्धृत करते हैं।

tathā nijena rūpena rūpākhyena sva-bhaktena — through his own form, named Rūpa, his own devotee; utsava-dāyī iti — he is the giver of festival; rūpaḥ tu svayam eva saḥ iti sarasvatī-kṛtaḥ arthaḥ api jñeyaḥ — and the sense made by Sarasvatī, 'but Rūpa is that very one himself,' should also be understood.
tathā nijena rūpena rūpa-ākhyena sva-bhaktena — तथा अपने रूप, अर्थात् 'रूप' नामक अपने भक्त से; utsava-dāyī iti — 'उत्सव-दायी' हैं, यह; rūpaḥ tu svayam eva saḥ iti — 'रूप' तो स्वयं ही वह है, यह; sarasvatī-kṛtaḥ arthaḥ api jñeyaḥ — सरस्वती द्वारा किया अर्थ भी जानने योग्य।
A further reading: through his own form named Rūpa — his devotee Rūpa Gosvāmī — he is the giver of festival. And there is a sense that the goddess of speech herself shaped, in the line 'but Rūpa is that very one himself'; that too should be understood here.
एक अर्थ यह भी जान लेना चाहिए, जो सरस्वती (देवी) के द्वारा किया गया है — अपने रूप, अर्थात् 'रूप' नामवाले अपने भक्त के द्वारा वे 'उत्सव-दायी' हैं; अथवा 'रूप' तो स्वयं वही (भगवान्) है — ऐसा भी अर्थ है।
Why cited: The tag 'rūpas tu svayam eva saḥ' is adduced to authorize the identification of Rūpa Gosvāmī with the Lord himself, backing this reading of 'nija-rūpa' as the devotee Rūpa.
क्यों उद्धृत: आचार्य 'निज-रूप' का एक और अर्थ, जो सरस्वती-देवी द्वारा किया गया कहा जाता है, प्रमाण रूप में जोड़ते हैं।
