Covers SK 1736–1760 (25 sūtras): all present. The spine is Aṣṭādhyāyī 5.1.72–5.1.96, in order, with two kinds of departure. First, the SK splices in two vṛddhi rules from the seventh adhyāya where their forms arise: 7.3.15 (saṃkhyāyāḥ saṃvatsarasaṃkhyasya ca, SK 1752), read after rātryahaḥsaṃvatsarāc ca because it governs dvisāṃvatsarikaḥ, and 7.3.16 (varṣasyābhaviṣyati, SK 1754), read after varṣāl luk ca because it governs dvivārṣikaḥ. Under 1754 the kaumudī also re-cites 7.3.17 (parimāṇāntasyāsaṃjñāśāṇayoḥ, already SK 1683) in its Aṣṭādhyāyī position with dvigu examples; it gets no new SK number. Second, the SK omits two Vedic rules, keeping them for the vaidikī section: 5.1.91 (vatsarāntāc chaś chandasi, SK 3493) and 5.1.92 (saṃparipūrvāt kha ca, SK 3494). So SK 1756 is 5.1.90 and SK 1757 is 5.1.93.
taddhitādhikāre ṭhañadhikāre kālādhikāraprakaraṇam — outline (p35, SK 1736–1760, all 25 sūtras)
This prakaraṇa runs under two headings, one inherited and one new.
- ṭhañ alone. The kaumudī closed p34 with ataḥ paraṃ ṭhañ eva (SK 1735): the ārhīya ṭhak and its fellows have lapsed, and only the prāgvatīya ṭhañ of
prāg vateṣ ṭhañ (5.1.18, SK 1680) continues. BM opens 1736 on this point. So wherever a sūtra here names no affix, the affix is ṭhañ. - kāla.
kālāt (1742) is a heading "after a word denoting time", running up to, but not including, vyuṣṭādibhyo 'ṇ (5.1.97, SK 1761, which opens p36). The kaumudī marks its end at 1760.
The chapter falls into two parts.
- 1736–1741: senses without the kāla heading. "Carries through", "has come into doubt", "goes [a distance]", and the road-words pathin and uttarapatha.
- 1742–1760: the kāla heading. Each sense comes with its own samarthavibhakti (the case of the base).
- third case: "produced by that" (1743); "to be overcome / obtainable / to be done / easy to do in that" (1757); the nipātana ṣaṣṭika (1756).
- second case: "engaged for, hired for, having lasted, going to last that" (1744), with apavādas for māsa, samā and their dvigus (1745–1755).
- second or first case: "that is his brahmacarya" (1758).
- sixth case: "the fee of that [sacrifice]" (1759).
- seventh case: "given / to be done there", with the affixes of the bhava sense (1760).
- Between 1743 and 1757 the rules for particular bases apply in five senses: nirvṛtta (1743) and the four of 1744 (BM at 1750, 1757).
Only the kaumudī blocks are translated (SK-TRANSLATE §25). The readings cited as BM (Bālamanoramā) and TB (Tattvabodhinī) are the ones recorded in the unit notes. Much of the TB is printed under a neighbouring unit (1736–1738 under sk.1734.t1; 1744 under sk.1742.t1; 1747 under sk.1746.t1; 1751–1753 under sk.1750.t1; 1755, 1757–1758 under sk.1754.t1), and is cited that way below. Where the p35 audit (.work/sk-run/p35-audit-fixes.md) corrects a reading, this outline follows the corrected reading. It applies throughout, most substantively to 1737 (the affix is ṭhañ), 1740 (nityam inside the affix-sense), 1758 (caturmāsāt carried into the last vārttika) and 1760 (kālavācinaḥ carried). Case names are given as "second-case word" and the like throughout. The digital source's corrupt forms are not repeated (1736 vartayati, 1738 yaujanaśatikaḥ, 1751 dvisaṃvatsarīṇaḥ all follow NSP 1915, scan-confirmed). Ordering: SK order throughout; nothing is reordered.
Affix shapes used below (standard operations, cited where the units themselves do not spell them out):
- ṭh → ik by
ṭhasyekaḥ (7.3.50, SK 1170): ṭhañ and ṭhan both give -ika. kha/khañ → īna by āyaneyīnīyiyaḥ… (7.1.2, SK 475). - ñ- and ṇ-marked affixes (ṭhañ, khañ, ṇa, ṇyat, ṇya, aṇ) bring ādivṛddhi (
taddhiteṣv acām ādeḥ, 7.2.117, SK 1075): pārāyaṇikaḥ, pānthaḥ, māsīnaḥ, ṣāṇmāsyaḥ. ṭhan, kha, yat, yap, ṣkan, kan do not: ṣaṇmāsikaḥ, samīnaḥ, māsyaḥ, dvimāsyaḥ, pathikaḥ. - Final a/ā of the stem is deleted before the affix by
yasyeti ca (6.4.148, SK 311): māsa → māsyaḥ, samā → samīnaḥ. - Feminines: the ṣ of ṣkan gives ṅīṣ (
ṣidgaurādibhyaś ca, 4.1.41, SK 498): pathikī. ṭhañ and aṇ take ṅīp (ṭiḍḍhāṇañ…, 4.1.15, SK 470): dvādaśāhikī, cāturmāsī.
A. ṭhañ in second-case senses: carries through, has come into doubt, goes [a distance] — running example: pārāyaṇaṃ vartayati → pārāyaṇikaḥ
- 1736 pārāyaṇaturāyaṇacāndrāyaṇaṃ vartayati 5.1.72 — ṭhañ after pārāyaṇa, turāyaṇa and cāndrāyaṇa as a second-case word, "carries it through" (vartayati).
pārāyaṇaṃ vartayati → pārāyaṇikaḥ (chātraḥ): ṭhañ → ika, ādivṛddhi ā stays, the a deleted. BM: pārāyaṇa is study of the Veda, and vartayati = āvartayati, "goes over".- turāyaṇa is a particular sacrifice:
taṃ vartayati → taurāyaṇikaḥ (yajamānaḥ), with ādivṛddhi u → au. Also cāndrāyaṇikaḥ (cāndrāyaṇa, a penance or vow). - BM, TB: the affix is used only of the student and the sacrificer, not of the teacher or the officiating priest, by non-expression (anabhidhāna). TB: so it is laid down in the ākara.
- The source reads vartayat; NSP reads vartayati.
- 1737 saṃśayam āpannaḥ 5.1.73 — ṭhañ after saṃśaya ("doubt") as a second-case word, "that has come into doubt [as its object]":
sāṃśayikaḥ, a thing (artha) that has become the object of doubt. - The affix is ṭhañ: the kaumudī's own frame (ataḥ paraṃ ṭhañ eva, SK 1735) settles it, and BM itself says under 1736 that only ṭhañ continues. BM's "ṭhak" here is an isolated slip or variant.
- BM, TB: the affix is not used of the doubter. For Amara's
sāṃśayikaḥ saṃśayāpannamānasaḥ, TB reports that some read saṃśayāpannamānasa as the matter the mind doubts about. - 1738 yojanaṃ gacchati 5.1.74 — ṭhañ after yojana as a second-case word, "goes [a distance of] that":
yaujanikaḥ. - vārttika krośaśatayojanaśatayor upasaṃkhyānam: ṭhañ also after krośaśata and yojanaśata:
krośaśataṃ gacchati → krauśaśatikaḥ; likewise yaujanaśatikaḥ (supplied from NSP; the source lacks it). - vārttika tato 'bhigamanam arhatīti ca vaktavyam: also "deserves being approached from that [distance]". The base is a fifth-case word (TB), for an elided gerund (lyablope pañcamī, BM):
krośaśatād abhigamanam arhati → krauśaśatiko bhikṣuḥ; yaujanaśatika ācāryaḥ.
B. The road: pathin and uttarapatha — running example: panthānaṃ gacchati → pathikaḥ
- 1739 pathaḥ ṣkan 5.1.75 — ṣkan after pathin as a second-case word, in the sense "goes", carried from 1738 (BM).
panthānaṃ gacchati → pathikaḥ: ṣkan → ka, no vṛddhi.- The ṣ is for ṅīṣ in the feminine:
pathikī. - 1740 pantho ṇa nityam 5.1.76 — after pathin as a second-case word, ṇa in the sense "[who] constantly (nityam) goes along it", and pantha replaces the stem.
panthānaṃ nityaṃ gacchati → pānthaḥ: pantha + ṇa, ādivṛddhi a → ā. The kaumudī gives the feminine pānthī without comment.- nityam belongs inside the affix-sense, not to the injunction. BM: it enters the meaning of the affix, and is not there to exclude the mahāvibhāṣā. TB: it qualifies the affix-meaning, and is not there to exclude the analytic phrase (vākya). TB on
chedādibhyo nityam (printed under sk.1727.t1) equates the two: the vākya is what the mahāvibhāṣā allows. - Counter-example, one who goes along the road but not constantly:
pathikaḥ (1739; TB). - BM, TB: the Bhāṣya rejects "nitya" altogether, since pāntha is also used of an occasional traveller and the analytic phrase occurs in usage. The kaumudī is translated on its own terms.
- NSP footnote: the reading aṇ for ṇa is against the Bhāṣya.
- 1741 uttarapathenāhṛtaṃ ca 5.1.77 — ṭhañ after uttarapatha as a third-case word, "brought by it", and by
ca "goes by it" (TB). uttarapathenāhṛtam → auttarapathikam; uttarapathena gacchati → auttarapathikaḥ. ādivṛddhi u → au.- vārttika āhṛtaprakaraṇe vārijaṅgalasthalakāntārapūrvād upasaṃkhyānam: also after pathin preceded by vāri, jaṅgala, sthala or kāntāra:
vāripathikam. - The vārttika names only "brought", but BM and TB extend it to "goes" as well. TB gives both analyses of vāripathikam: vāripathena gacchati or vāripathenāhṛtam. BM adds sthālapathikaḥ, kāntārapathikaḥ.
C. The kāla heading: produced by that; engaged, hired, having lasted, going to last — running example: māsaṃ bhṛtaḥ → māsikaḥ karmakaraḥ
- 1742 kālāt 5.1.78 — adhikāra: "after a word denoting time". It runs up to, but not including,
vyuṣṭādibhyo 'ṇ (SK 1761). The affix remains ṭhañ. - BM: the limit is known from the tradition's explanation (vyākhyāna).
- TB: kāla means any time-word, not the word kāla itself. 1744 uses the second case of total connection with a time, and 1745 qualifies māsa by kāla.
- NSP footnote: whatever expresses time in any way is included (Bhāṣya on
tad asya parimāṇam); over-extension is barred by anabhidhāna. BM uses this at 1759. - 1743 tena nirvṛttam 5.1.79 — ṭhañ after a time-word as a third-case word, "brought about by that":
ahnā nirvṛttam → āhnikam. - TB: the third case is of the instrument (karaṇa). In the cāturarthika
tena nirvṛttam (4.2.68, SK 1280) it is of the agent. - āhnikam: ahan + ṭhañ, ādivṛddhi a → ā. BM, TB: no ṭi-lopa by
nas taddhite (SK 679), because of the niyama ahnaṣ ṭakhor eva (6.4.145, SK 789). The a of -an drops instead (allopa; BM at 1751). - 1744 tam adhīṣṭo bhṛto bhūto bhāvī 5.1.80 — ṭhañ after a time-word as a second-case word, in four senses. The second case is that of total connection (atyantasaṃyoga), by
kālādhvanor atyantasaṃyoge (2.3.5, SK 558; BM, TB). - The kaumudī defines each sense and gives one example each, all
māsikaḥ: - adhīṣṭa, set to work after being honoured:
māsam adhīṣṭaḥ → māsiko 'dhyāpakaḥ; - bhṛta, bought with wages:
māsaṃ bhṛtaḥ → māsikaḥ karmakaraḥ; - bhūta, whose time is pervaded by its own existence:
māsaṃ bhūtaḥ → māsiko vyādhiḥ; - bhāvin, the same, but the time is yet to come:
māsaṃ bhāvī → māsika utsavaḥ. - From here to 1757 the base-specific rules apply in these four senses plus nirvṛtta (1743): the five senses.
D. Age in months: māsa, a dvigu of māsa, and ṣaṇmāsa — running example: māsaṃ bhūtaḥ → māsyaḥ / māsīnaḥ
- 1745 māsād vayasi yatkhañau 5.1.81 — yat and khañ after māsa ("month"), in the sense "having existed through that", when age (vayas) is meant.
māsaṃ bhūtaḥ → māsyaḥ (yat, the a deleted); māsīnaḥ (khañ → īna). A month old.- Only bhūta of the four senses applies. BM grounds this in vyākhyāna, TB in capacity (sāmarthya): being engaged or hired for a month says nothing about a bodily age. The translation does not choose.
- TB: the ñ of khañ is for accent and to block puṃvadbhāva:
māsīnābhāryaḥ. māsīna means a child. - 1746 dvigor yap 5.1.82 — yap after a dvigu ending in māsa, same sense and condition (
māsād vayasi continues). dvau māsau bhūtaḥ → dvimāsyaḥ: no vṛddhi.- TB: tadantavidhi holds before vati for compounds with a numeral as first member, so 1745 would give yat and khañ. yap is taught instead because its p makes it anudātta, so dvimāsya keeps the accent of its first member by
igantakāla… (6.2.29, SK 3763). - 1747 ṣaṇmāsāṇ ṇyac ca 5.1.83 — ṇyat after ṣaṇmāsa ("six months"), age still meant.
- Three affixes result (BM): ṇyat by the sūtra; yap carried forward from 1746; and by
ca, ṭhañ. BM grounds yap's continuation in its svarita marking, TB in vyākhyāna alone. - The kaumudī gives two forms:
ṣaṇmāsyaḥ (yap, no vṛddhi) and ṣāṇmāsikaḥ (ṭhañ, ādivṛddhi). The ṇyat form is not given here (NSP likewise). - 1748 avayasi ṭhaṃś ca 5.1.84 — when age is not meant, ṭhan after ṣaṇmāsa, and by
ca ṇyat. ṣaṇmāsiko vyādhiḥ: ṭhan → ika, no vṛddhi. An illness of six months' standing.ṣāṇmāsyaḥ: ṇyat, with ādivṛddhi a → ā.
E. Years, nights and days: kha after samā, and after dvigus of samā, rātri, ahan, saṃvatsara — running example: samām bhūtaḥ → samīnaḥ, and in a dvigu dvisamīnaḥ / dvaisamikaḥ
- 1749 samāyāḥ khaḥ 5.1.85 — kha after samā ("year") as a second-case word, in all four senses of 1744. BM: the whole of 1744 is carried by a frog's leap (maṇḍūkapluti) over 1745–1748. TB cites Amara for samā = year.
samām adhīṣṭo bhṛto bhūto bhāvī vā → samīnaḥ: kha → īna, the ā deleted, no vṛddhi.- 1750 dvigor vā 5.1.86 — after a dvigu ending in samā, kha only optionally (
samāyāḥ khaḥ still holds). In the other option the prāgvatīya ṭhañ (BM, TB). dvisamīnaḥ (kha); dvaisamikaḥ (ṭhañ, vṛddhi of the first member only; why, see 1752).- TB: tadantavidhi for numeral-first compounds would make 1749's kha obligatory here; this rule makes it optional.
- The kaumudī: up to
tena parijayya… (SK 1757) the affixes are in the five senses beginning with nirvṛtta. BM: 1743 and the four of 1744, applied as fits (yathāyogam). - 1751 rātryahaḥsaṃvatsarāc ca 5.1.87 — the same optional kha after a dvigu (
dvigoḥ still holds) ending in rātri, ahan or saṃvatsara; otherwise ṭhañ. - rātri:
dvirātrīṇaḥ / dvairātrikaḥ. - ahan:
dvyahīnaḥ / dvaiyahnikaḥ. - In dvaiyahnikaḥ the niyama
ahnaṣ ṭakhor eva blocks ṭi-lopa; the a of -an drops, and aic comes before the y by na yvābhyām… (7.3.3, SK 1098; BM, TB). - dvyahīnaḥ: the kha form, with ṭi-lopa, which
ahnaṣ ṭakhoḥ allows before kha (BM). - No ṭac: the samāsānta injunction is not obligatory (anitya), so ṭac of
rājāhaḥsakhibhyaḥ (5.4.91, SK 788) does not come. BM, TB: had ṭac come, it would be later and block kha, and the ahna substitute (SK 790) would yield the unwanted dvyahnīna. - saṃvatsara:
dvisaṃvatsarīṇaḥ (kha only; the ṭhañ form dvisāṃvatsarikaḥ follows at 1752). The source prints dvisaṃvalatsarīṇaḥ; NSP reads dvisaṃvatsarīṇaḥ.
F. Dvigus of saṃvatsara and varṣa: final-member vṛddhi, and luk — running example: dvivarṣa → dvivarṣīṇaḥ / dvivārṣikaḥ / dvivarṣaḥ
- 1752 saṃkhyāyāḥ saṃvatsarasaṃkhyasya ca 7.3.15 — spliced in here. After a numeral, before a taddhita marked with ñ, ṇ or k, vṛddhi falls on the first vowel of a final member (uttarapada) that is saṃvatsara or a numeral. BM: it stands under the heading
uttarapadasya (7.3.10, SK 1396), and the sixth-case form saṃvatsarasaṃkhyasya is a samāhāra-dvandva (saṃvatsaraś ca saṃkhyā ca). dvisāṃvatsarikaḥ: ṭhañ, the sa of saṃvatsara gets vṛddhi.dve ṣaṣṭī bhṛtaḥ → dviṣāṣṭikaḥ: the numeral ṣaṣṭi as final member.- Why name saṃvatsara, a twelve-month measure already covered by
parimāṇāntasya… (SK 1683; BM gives the objection)? To exclude time-measures from that rule's parimāṇa. Hence dvaisamikaḥ (1750) gets no final-member vṛddhi. - TB (printed under sk.1750.t1), recorded: the point stands for more (upalakṣaṇa). In dvivarṣā (hired for two years, ṭhañ with luk by 1753), ṅīp by
dvigoḥ (SK 479) is barred by aparimāṇabistācita… (SK 480), because time is not excluded as a parimāṇa. - 1753 varṣāl luk ca 5.1.88 — after a dvigu ending in varṣa, kha optionally; in the other option ṭhañ; and optionally luk of the affix. BM: luk of kha or ṭhañ.
- The kaumudī announces three forms and gives two:
dvivarṣīṇo vyādhiḥ: kha → īna. An illness that has lasted two years.dvivarṣaḥ: the affix deleted.- The ṭhañ form is not given here; 1754's dvivārṣikaḥ / dvaivarṣikaḥ appear to be that form.
- TB (printed under sk.1750.t1): vyādhiḥ is chosen because the affix-meaning must be non-sentient; for the sentient, 1755 makes luk obligatory.
- 1754 varṣasyābhaviṣyati 7.3.16 — spliced in here. Vṛddhi of a final member varṣa before a ñ-, ṇ- or k-marked taddhita, except in the future sense (bhāvin). BM: abhaviṣyati means a taddhita in any of the five senses except bhāvin.
dvivārṣiko manuṣyaḥ: ṭhañ, vṛddhi of va. In the future sense: dvaivarṣikaḥ (ādivṛddhi only).- Exception to the exception: in adhīṣṭa and bhṛta,
dve varṣe adhīṣṭo bhṛto vā karma kariṣyati → dvivārṣiko manuṣyaḥ. Futurity is understood (from karma kariṣyati), but it is not the meaning of the taddhita (BM: the kta of adhīṣṭa, bhṛta conveys pastness). - The kaumudī re-cites
parimāṇāntasyāsaṃjñāśāṇayoḥ (7.3.17, SK 1683) here, with dvigu examples: dvau kuḍavau parimāṇam asya → dvikauḍavikaḥ;dvābhyāṃ suvarṇābhyāṃ krītam → dvisauvarṇikam;dvinaiṣkikam.- Not in a name:
pañca kalāpāḥ parimāṇam asya → pāñcakalāpikam (ādivṛddhi only). - Not with śāṇa:
dvaiśāṇam. Some add kulija to the exclusion: dvaikulijikaḥ. - manuṣyaḥ with a sentient sense collides with 1755's obligatory luk. BM, reporting Haradatta: the luk is obligatory only in bhūta; some divide the phrase as 'manuṣyaḥ ("non-human"). TB: some take manuṣya as a man-like image. BM's pratīka lacks manuṣyaḥ and supplies vyādhiḥ.
- 1755 cittavati nityam 5.1.89 — after a dvigu ending in varṣa, the luk (of kha and ṭhañ, BM) is obligatory when the affix-meaning is sentient.
dvivarṣo dārakaḥ: a two-year-old boy (dāraka = bālaka, BM, TB).- Haradatta's bhūta-only restriction (1754) is recorded, not adopted. The kaumudī states the rule without it.
G. Third-case time-words: ṣaṣṭika, and "to be overcome / obtained / done in that" — running example: māsena parijayyaḥ → māsiko vyādhiḥ
- 1756 ṣaṣṭikāḥ ṣaṣṭirātreṇa pacyante 5.1.90 — nipātana: ṣaṣṭikāḥ, "[grains] that ripen in sixty nights".
- After ṣaṣṭirātra as a third-case word (BM supplies the stem), kan, and the word rātra is elided: ṣaṣṭi(rātra) + ka →
ṣaṣṭikāḥ. The plural is not essential (atantra). - ṣaṣṭika is a kind of grain. NSP footnote: only a kind of śāli rice, not mung beans.
- 5.1.91–92 (Vedic) are omitted here (SK 3493–3494).
- 1757 tena parijayyalabhyakāryasukaram 5.1.93 — ṭhañ after a time-word as a third-case word, "to be overcome (parijayya), obtainable (labhya), to be done (kārya) or easy to do (sukara) in that".
māsena parijayyaḥ → māsiko vyādhiḥ: an illness that can be overcome in a month. The kaumudī glosses parijayya as jetuṃ śakyaḥ.māsena labhyaṃ kāryaṃ sukaraṃ vā → māsikam.- TB (printed under sk.1754.t1): the ay of parijayya is by
kṣayyajayyau śakyārthe (6.1.81, SK 65). - BM: the five senses nirvṛtta etc. stop here.
H. Brahmacarya, the sacrificial fee, "given / to be done there"; the kāla heading ends — running example: māsaṃ brahmacaryam asya → māsiko brahmacārī
- 1758 tad asya brahmacaryam 5.1.94 — ṭhañ after a time-word, "of this", with reference to brahmacarya. The kaumudī gives two construals.
- (1) After a second-case word (of total connection), in the sense "of this [person]":
māsaṃ brahmacaryam asya → māsiko brahmacārī; ārdhamāsikaḥ. BM answers the objection that the sūtra's tat is first case: brahmacarya qualifies the person, whose brahmacarya is pervaded by the time. BM: ārdhamāsikaḥ has vṛddhi of both members by ardhāt parimāṇasya… (SK 1684). - (2) After a first-case word (BM supplies "time-word"), in the sense "of this [brahmacarya]":
māso 'sya → māsikaṃ brahmacaryam. Here brahmacarya itself is the affix-meaning (BM). - vārttika mahānāmnyādibhyaḥ ṣaṣṭhyantebhya upasaṃkhyānam: also after mahānāmnī etc. as a sixth-case word (BM: ṭhañ in the sense asya brahmacaryam).
tāsāṃ brahmacaryam asya → māhānāmnikaḥ. The mahānāmnīs are the ṛc verses beginning vidā maghavan.- Haradatta:
māhānāmikaḥ, by puṃvadbhāva under bhasyāḍhe and then ṭi-lopa (TB explains, taking the word as yaugika). BM rejects this: the word is always feminine, so not bhāṣitapuṃska, and the Bhāṣya's example is māhānāmnikam. Both are recorded. - vārttika caturmāsāṇ ṇyo yajñe: ṇya after caturmāsa when a sacrifice is meant, in the sense "occurring there" (tatra bhavaḥ, the kaumudī's gloss).
caturṣu māseṣu bhavanti → cāturmāsyāni, sacrificial rites. - BM glosses caturṣu as "when four months have passed". This is recorded, not followed: the English keeps "occur in four months".
- vārttika saṃjñāyām aṇ: aṇ [after caturmāsa, in the sense "occurring there"] when a name is meant. The anuvṛtti of caturmāsāt is stated by both commentators; TB says the preceding vārttika was placed here for that purpose.
caturṣu māseṣu bhavati → cāturmāsī, the name of the āṣāḍhī full moon. ṅīp, because the stem ends in aṇ.- BM, TB: the vārttika is needed despite
tatra bhavaḥ (SK 1428), to exclude luk by dvigor lug anapatye (4.1.88, SK 1080). - 1759 tasya ca dakṣiṇā yajñākhyebhyaḥ 5.1.95 — ṭhañ after names of sacrifices as a sixth-case word, "the fee (dakṣiṇā) of that".
dvādaśāhasya dakṣiṇā → dvādaśāhikī: feminine with the understood dakṣiṇā. BM: the dvādaśāha has time as a subordinate part, so it counts as a time-word.- Because the sūtra says ākhyā ("name"), the affix comes even after a word not denoting time:
āgniṣṭomikī, vājapeyikī. BM, TB: with plain "yajñebhyaḥ" the kāla heading would restrict it to dvādaśāha and the like. - 1760 tatra ca dīyate kāryaṃ bhavavat 5.1.96 — after a time-word (kālavācin) that is a seventh-case word (TB, BM), in the senses "is given there" (dīyate) and "is to be done there" (kārya), the affixes are as for the bhava sense ("occurring there").
prāvṛṣi dīyate kāryaṃ vā → prāvṛṣeṇyam: the eṇya of prāvṛṣa eṇyaḥ (4.3.17, SK 1388) is extended here (BM, TB).śāradam, given or to be done in autumn: the aṇ of saṃdhivelādyṛtunakṣatrebhyo 'ṇ (4.3.16, SK 1387).- BM's alternative (vastutas tu), recorded: one sense, "tatra kāryaṃ dīyate", after names of sacrifices, as in
agniṣṭome dīyate bhaktam → āgniṣṭomikam. Gold given at the agniṣṭoma does not qualify, since it is not "done" there. NSP's footnote gives the same as the Bhāṣya's view (Śabdenduśekhara). - Close: within the ṭhañ heading, the range of the kāla heading is complete. p36 (ṭhañvidhiprakaraṇam) opens with
vyuṣṭādibhyo 'ṇ (SK 1761).
