bībhatso nāma jugupsāsthāyibhāvātmakaḥ |
bībhatsaḥ nāmathe rasa called bībhatsa (the mood of disgust)बीभत्स नामक (रस)
jugupsā-sthāyi-bhāva-ātmakaḥat its core it is the stable emotion (sthāyibhāva) disgust (jugupsā) -ātmaka = 'having as its very self', so jugupsā is the essence, not a mere ingredientजुगुप्सा (घृणा) रूपी स्थायीभाव ही जिसका अपना स्वरूप है
bībhatsaḥ nāma — the rasa called bībhatsa; jugupsā-sthāyi-bhāva-ātmakaḥ — its very essence is the stable emotion disgust.
This is the rasa called bībhatsa, the mood of disgust. What it essentially is, is the stable emotion disgust (jugupsā).
sthāyibhāva — the abiding emotion that a rasa is built on. Here jugupsā (revulsion, loathing) is that abiding ground; the -ātmaka fixes it as the rasa's own self, not one factor among many.

And this bībhatsa is produced by its vibhāvas — the things that excite it. These are the hearing, the seeing, the describing, and so on, of what is heart-displeasing (ahṛdya), disagreeable (apriya), unsavory (acoṣya), and undesired (aniṣṭa).
vibhāva — the 'determinant', the situational cause that awakens the emotion. Abhinava glosses the four object-words in turn (s3–s6). The mūla here reads acoṣya ('not to be eaten'); his lemma reads acokṣa ('unclean') — a textual variant filling the same slot.

'ahṛdya' (heart-displeasing): a thing that may be pleasant enough in itself, yet is by its very nature disagreeable to a particular person — the way garlic is for brāhmaṇas, for whom it is forbidden food.
The text here is unsettled — 'nisargato 'prayataṁ' with a bracketed correction '(to 'priyaṁ)'; we follow 'priyaṁ ('disagreeable'). dvija — the 'twice-born' brāhmaṇa, for whom laśuna (garlic) is a proscribed food.

'apriya' (disagreeable): a thing made disagreeable by some fault of one's own constitution or type — as milk is to a person clogged with phlegm.
The pair contrasts with ahṛdya (s3): there the thing is disagreeable by an innate rule (garlic for brāhmaṇas); here it is disagreeable through a passing bodily condition (milk for the phlegm-afflicted).

pratighātāt avyaktāni pādayoḥ patanāni — because of striking against things, the footfalls are indistinct; yadi vā — or else; asthi-kaṅkāla-ādi-ākule pitṛvane sañcarataḥ asphuṭitāni pāda-patanāni — for one moving in a cremation ground full of bones and skeletons, the footfalls are unclear; kvacit dīrghāṇi anyatra hrasvāni — here long, there short.
Why 'indistinct footfalls'? On one reading, the feet fall unevenly because they keep striking against things underfoot. Or else — the second reading, left standing beside the first — because a man picking his way through a cremation ground littered with bones and skeletons sets his feet down unclearly: a long step here, a short one there. Both explanations are offered; neither is set aside.
Abhinava gives two glosses of avyakta-pāda-patana and does not decide between them. pitṛvana — the cremation or burning ground, the 'grove of the ancestors'.
